This one should never be forgotten. He carried more weight than people realize. I doubt any other thoroughbred could do what he did.

there's only one chance they got of beating 'him, if they can breed 'em with wings on and get Kingsford-Smith to ride 'em ...and then I'll doubt they beat him even then.. 30's banter 🤣

Phar Lap's sire (i.e. male parent), Night Raid was imported from England. Phar Lap's dam (i.e. female parent) was Entreaty, bred in New Zealand. Phar Lap was foaled (born) in Timaru, South Island, New Zealand on 4 October 1926. His grandsire and damsire were both from Great Britain. He was purchased by a resident of the United States of America, David Davis, in Trentham. Trentham is in the Wellington region of New Zealand (Wellington being the capital city). Phar Lap arrives in Sydney, Australia and his owner does not want to have anything to do with him... [laugh]. What a joke. Phar Lap, the name, hails from Siamese (i.e. Thailand) origins. If anyone says that this horse is Australian then he (or she) can also say that they are Mickey Mouse... lol. Phar Lap was a gelding. Anyone knows what that means? A castrated male horse. Ten minutes research reveals that life expectancy for a horse is 25-30 years. It is "not uncommon" for horses to live into their 30s. The noteworthy ones lived into their 50s. Phar Lap died at 5 years 6 months. That was not a life. For what? If we humans did not involve ourselves, there is no way horses would run set distances around an oval track. What right do we then have to say that any horse is a "champion"? A "champion" for what or who? Let alone debate about some artificial idea of the greatest. Yes, I do eat meat. Yes, I also have a love of horses. I hear they are incredibly sensitive e.g. flicking flies off their back with their tail. I did not know the details in this comment until looking at this video. I was a seven year old when the 1983 movie starring Tom Burlinson came out. Now at 44, I can scarcely believe that this is one more thing which Australian culture has dudded me on. I remember watching 'Wide World of Sports' in the 1980s with Mike Gibson (suicided due to depression), 'Sports Sunday' with Ken Sutcliffe in the 1990s. Both featured horse racing quite extensively. I have placed a half-dozen or so bets in my adult life as well. We held sweepstakes every Melbourne Cup in high school and many times in the workplaces I have worked in. It has always seemed like innocent fun. This is awful. And gambling has ruined so many lives. Not only the gambler's life but the life/lives of those around him/her e.g. immediate family. It is shameful. It is definitely not known by watching pieces like this though. I am - at this moment - at a loss. 11:13pm, Tuesday 25 August 2020 - 30,639 - 118/4 - 17(exclusive)

He never once raced in NZ how could he be considered a NZ racehorse? He was part owned by an Australian and American he raced all of his starts in Australia except for his last start get over yourself he never will be a NZ racehorse. If every horse that races is considered by where their sire won then where would that leave us all. WAKE UP.

@@wayneo1269 I will pick it up from the end of your comment and work back. You feel the need to capitalise... what is it? An instruction? A commandment? I don't know you from Adam "wayneo1269"... what are you asking me to do? I am awake and alert. Read on if *you* want to see something. I did not write where Phar Lap's sire, Nightraid, won (or if he won at all). What I said was what is in the video: Nightraid was imported from England. We humans assign citizenship to one another based on where we were born i.e. in the first instance. Horses do not do anything of the sort with one another... [laughs]. I kinda side with the horses and all other living creatures on this one. That aside, everyone and their pet dog insists on calling Phar Lap Australian. Why? Because he was castrated and forced to run around an oval track here? I continue to be appalled by the shocking and abysmal life which Phar Lap lived. I did/do not call him a New Zealand racehorse either so... errr.. what is it that I am supposed to get over? You're putting words in my mouth and then criticising me for those words. Haha is all I can say. What I do say: let us not bother with such artificial things as nation-states in the first place. England, New Zealand, Australia, United States of America..... Those names/ideas were not here 15,000 years ago and will not be here in 15,000 years time (the blink of an eye in terms of landmass history/age). I prefer a simple approach. Our location is what it is and we live the best we can. My thinking is based on the big picture - ourselves, all life and the Earth. I cannot stop you from saying whatever you want to say. Nor do I want to. On my end, I did not say anything even close to Phar Lap being a New Zealand racehorse. I do not even think in such a manner. Why attack me for something I never expressed? Perhaps you would prefer a comments exchange with yourself? I do not know why you even replied to me. From one person to another, though, I wish you all the best. I am not, however, going to box my mind in so that you and I can agree in a KZbin comments exchange. I mean, what is your actual name to begin with? Anyway, I do wish you all the best. 3:19pm Wednesday 14 October 2020 - 31,312 - 124/4 - 20(exclusive)

@@wayneo1269 All good here as well Wayne. I was not offended but.. yeah.. I thought it unfortunate that that was the reply I received. Anyway, water under the bridge now. All clear. I admit that it is rare to see such a 'u-turn' in tone, content, however one wants to say it i.e. from what you wrote 2-3 months ago. If I may ask: what happened? Whether you answer or not, I too wish you well. Cheers.

@@Tom.Livanos I'm just tired of arguing with people on social media and we all got to take responsibility if we want the conversations to remain civil we can all play our part you seem to me like a decent guy and that's good enough for me. This contest that plays out on social media is tiring I would rather just get on with people that argue.

Ruffian (filly) was also considered a freak. Secretariat as well, because of his large heart. I also owned a freak. My Thoroughbred was 18.2 hands, 1375 pounds, and lived to the age of 34. He never raced---he competed as a hunter/jumper. He also had a large heart---found at necropsy. Colic took him. (Jan Griffiths).
