James 5:13a ESV
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.
When we suffer, we PRAY.
Through prayer we transfer our burdens to the only one who can carry them.
Prayer either alleviates our suffering or strengthens us through it.
James 5:13b NLT
Are any of you happy? You should sing praises.
When we are happy, we PRAISE.
Praise is a response to God’s blessings.
Praise reminds us of who God is and who we are.
James 5:14-15a NLT
14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15a Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well.
When we are sick, we pray WITH OTHERS.
Prayer allows us to process reality.
Prayer allows us to empathize with and support others.
James 5:15b-16 NLT
15b And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. 16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
When we sin, the prayers of friends BRING HEALING.
Sin leads to physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences.
James 5:17-18 NLT
17 Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! 18 Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.
When we are burnt out and without hope, we pray REMEMBERING God’s character.
James 5:19-20 ESV
19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
When someone leaves, we NEVER give up on them.
