An existing mechanism for the increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) associated with the number of cigarettes smoked per day cited in the U.S. Surgeon General's Report 2010 , concluded that the risk of IHD is affected by platelet aggregation in those who smoke less than 5 cigarettes per day, and by CO hemoglobin, HDL cholesterol, and fibrinogen in those who smoke more than 5 cigarettes per day. By applying the biomarker data obtained from the systematic review to this mechanism, we estimated the impact of the use of heated tobacco products (HTP) on the risk of IHD. Since the values of these biomarkers when using HTP are closer to those of never smokers than those of smokers, applying these biomarker data to this mechanism suggests that the risk of IHD from use of HTP is lower than that from smoking.
