I like them. I have appreciation for the longer tutorials as well though. They aren't jam packed with the info I need, but a lot of the info I need is not as straightforward as 'How do I make x?' It's watching them in their gameplay to find out how they set their stockpiles. Where they tunnel to first. Do they stop to mine out this vein here, or just pick up ore/rock as they get to somewhere else? Do they build a base and stick with it, sending out expeditions for resources? Or are they consistently building downwards to build a gigantic z-level fortress? Those require a lot more organic watching. So the long tutorials have their place. Just enough to get you to where you try again and have fun again! xD
@Kenjuudo2 жыл бұрын

@TurkeyTray easiest is just set the condition to make however many beds when there are less than x beds available. The condition doesn't count beds that have been installed, only ones in storage so you just have a certain number on standby. This part of the game reminds me a lot of One Hour One Life which is a social experiment of a game that I suggest everyone check out. I think it says a lot about human nature and cooperation, but maybe that's just me. It'e exclusively multiplayer and you spawn by being born into a family of other players. It's like if Dwarf Fortess was a permadeath co-op MMO. You live for a maximum of 60 minutes before you have to say goodbye and let all your hard work go to the next generation. It's very emotionally gripping when a parent gives you an indigo knitted coat your grandmother made from their grandparent's sheep herd and you get to pass it on for another generation... But anyways it's usually one male born into the family that knows everything from the wiki and has the time (they don't comically drop babies while working like females) and takes it upon himself to create a metal industry from scratch for everyone to benefit from. I have so many memories of old dying dudes basically saying "There you go, got a well working. Now go water the crops so that your daughters survive. Teach them to make fertilizer. Now I'm going to stop eating and walk into the wilderness so you don't have to take care of my bones. Take my pack. I love you all." Also shoutout to the mothers that know how to feed babies without wasting everyone's food, you leave then by the fire and wait for babies to say "F" when they're hungry or you waste your food picking them up. Great game.

I've been heavily relying on the dwarf fortress wiki to find out most basic information about things. If you search up steel on the wiki there'll be a recipe to make steel on its page. There's a variety of stones considered Flux stones, which is combined with iron to make pig iron. Combine pig iron with Flux and iron to make steel. The wiki also describes which stones are considered Flux stones. The wiki extremely helpful if you don't mind a little bit of reading

Is there a way to set certain workshops to only be used by a min/max skill level dwarf without manually assigning a single dwarf to a workshop? Also how do you get multiple dwarfs to be buried in coffins without giving each dwarf a personal tomb? Is there a way to specify quality for military uniforms? Also where can you set bolts etc? Also quality options for stockpiles so you can set up autosmelting setups would be nice.
@kalaksed2 жыл бұрын
There should be a way to set allowed skill levels for individual workshops by selecting the workshop itself, if i recall. May need a manager (noble position) to access it, i forget As for burials, should be able to just buuld a bunch of coffins in a room, set them to accept bodies (may want to turn off non-fort members and animals). But certain ones require (nobles) or deserve (big damn heroes) their own tombs, and can be fun to design those sometimes

I would of liked abit more into it like going through some basic ores and what they make. Since if someone just messes around abit would eventually hit hematite makes iron. But I don't know what flux stones are and why wood when you got lignite and coal to make coke (are they flux stones?) maybe abit more later tutorial but how does all them other metals that can be used for weapons work? Cause iron, copper, bronze is kinda straight forward steel is abit more know how but then pale, twinkling etc. is just a big shoulder shrug for me. Also how does the multi-metal ores work like something that says its copper and silver? Is it always copper with a chance for silver?

If you're able to make steel, is there a good reason you'd want to make iron weapons first? I know it'd be faster than steel which could help in some situations. Is the damage dealing and blocking significantly different enough that iron is a wasted step? (All actual questions, not rhetorical)

Dunno if Im doing something wrong or the tutorial just screwed me by putting me somewhere with not a single node of metal.
@kalaksed2 жыл бұрын
Possibly the latter, though that seems relatively rare, esp for deep underground Do you remember if your embark screen listed metals at all? There should be one of two options, or preferrably both, when you choose an embark. Unless you want a speciric challenge, such as 'no smelting' or 'only import your metal industry' (which you may have accidentaly chosen) 'Shallow metal(s)' means there is at least one metal ore near the surface. Some biomes, like mountain, can even have exposed veins of it on the surface 'Deep metal(s)' means a fair amount of digging to find your ores, often between caverns 2 and 3 or lower
