I love it!! I do a modified Ruth Stout also. I add the leaves into my growing mounds.I go around my neighborhood and take bags of leaves left for the trash to pick up. I use straw instead of hay. I also add Goat poo- which I have found to be brown gold!! Sometimes I just lay a mound of Goat poo and plant in that. My squash was unbelievable with this Goat poo mound method last year. What I especially like about learning this permaculture Ruth Stout method is that it really blocks out the Bermuda grass which is the devil around here. If a sprig of Bermuda does make it to the top of the growing layers, it can be easily pulled up because it can't make itself twisted and glued in to the area-the way it does into plain soil.

I really love the idea of collecting other peoples' yard "waste", and putting it to good use in the garden. One person's trash really is another person's treasure! :) I'm also really glad to hear that you've had success with this method in dealing with Bermuda grass. From what I gather, if you can smother out that stuff, you can smother out anything! lol

It's like a work of art, watching the two of you work together, so beautifully. Truly, it is a blessing. Can't wait to see the garlic pop up in the spring. I absolutely love, love garlic. It's actually a natural antibiotic, which I'm pretty sure you know.

Trying this method with Elephant Garlic. Planted them last November 5th, 2018. It is May 21st and they are almost 22 inches tall . Potatoes are huge too and were planted in April 4th this year , 2019. So far , so good. Just palnted a single Lemongrass plant that was already about 18 inches tall. In a short time ..it has become the "Queen " of the Garden Growing and spreading fast !

The Garlic was awesome and has been incorporated into bone broth ...mmmmgood ! The Zuchinni...over 200 lbs and still growng tastes best chilled and sliced into small wedges ..not cooked. . The potatoes are in and HUGE . The Peppers struggled , yet we have green and jalapeno and a sweet hot chili pepper . Tomatoes we just left to themselves to see how it would do without any interference ...Interesting...but no fruit picking yet. So far so good. 2 "doubting Thomases " have got their own Raised Huglekulture/Ruth Stout gardens going after seeing ours. Too few weeds and no work !! They loved it as did we ! Thank you for keeping it real ! Peace !

I go to Walmart toy dept around 7 pm. They always have someone putting cardboard boxes into a cart all neat and folded up. Just put some in your own basket and keep shopping!! Also, the Dollar Tree always has lots of boxes.

Wow you guys are precise! I just slap garlic in the ground. I don't think you used enough cardboard and it didn't appear overlapped in your video. My understanding is that cardboard smothers out the grass because it cuts off the light. If there are cracks between the cardboard, the grass will live and you will have to start over again next year. You will know if you did enough next summer. I have to use 2 - 3 layers of overlapping cardboard to smother bermuda grass in Texas.

I didn't use enough hay. So my soil is still clay-y. Gonna have to either raise the beds or go to soil bag gardening in order to use my large plot.
