The 2000s? That's literally the decade that their CoD fate was sealed. I know the Wolverine game, Raven-Wolfenstein and Singularity are looked on nostalgically by Xbox kids but they were bizarre marketing blunders. A licensed game based on a pile of shit (X-Men Origins), a reboot (Wolfenstein) of a reboot (Return to Castle Wolfenstein) of a reboot (Wolfenstein 3D) of an ancient game (Castle Wolfenstein), and a 3-year johnny-come-lately STALKER thing - and that after STALKER's repeated delays. I too think they came out way better than anyone could have expected, reading this on paper, but these things were all very rote and desperate compared to when they actually did stuff they wanted to work on in the 1990s.

The biggest one by far though that I've ever seen in the games industry though still has to be the one given to Free Radical Design. They rivaled old school Bungie in terms of how damn amazing they were, but after Timesplitters: Future Perfect came out, they were heavily abused and passed around like a hooker at a frat boy party by a bunch of """AAA""" publishers until finally, there was nothing left of them. I still remember how my father installed Hexen 1 and called me to play. I was playing, he stayed behind. 5 minutes after he asked "Do you know what this game has, that none other FPS had? You can JUMP in this game". That was such an incredible feeling. I remember how with each new game i payed extra attention to new mechanics. It felt like you are witnessing the evolution infront of you. Heretic added inventory. Hexen - jumps. Build engine trio added alot of enviorment interactions and talking protags e.t.c. That being said - i am not sure if i love Hexen. Spent too much time not knowing where is "THIS" switch i need to find. The worst aspect for me - weapons. Each class has only 4 and thats just not it. Paladin - all weapons are fine, but nothing incredible. Cleric - horrible mace, fine staff, okay-ish fire spell (cuz it takes like 4-5 hits to take down a single centaur) and PHENOMINAL 4th weapon. Mage - fine rod, horrible ice spell (weak, short range, creates an obstacle), PHENOMINAL lightning spell (my favorite weapon in the game... probably all games, and weak unrelyable 4th weapon. I have no clue how much dmg it does and will it actually hit the target.

One thing I find really interesting about Hexen's ultimate weapons is that their strengths and weaknesses differ from each other: 1) Baratus' ultimate weapon, Quietus, is the most effective against bosses, as Quietus' fireballs explode on impact, and is also really good on groups of enemies, provided they're directly in front of you. 2) Parias' Wraithverge is undoubtedly the best of three on groups of enemies, however it's completely useless against bosses, as the wraiths that the weapon shoots out will not attack the same enemy twice in a row; they need to seek out another target, at which point they will then go back to the boss (if there are no other enemies around). 3) Daedolon's Bloodscourge is kind of a mixture of the two. It's pretty good against groups of enemies (but not as much as Wraithverge) and is effective enough against bosses (though nowhere near as much so as Quietus).
@arnox4554
@arnox4554 4 ай бұрын
One thing that always bugged me about Hexen by FAR though was how limited the weapon selection was. Only a grand total of four weapons (per character) for the entirety of the game's run-time? Really? And maybe I wouldn't care nearly so much if the weapons were all more complex, like, for example, they could all block attacks with varying levels of effectiveness and etc, but they all pretty much boiled down to damaging melee and projectile weapons with a small exception being perhaps the Wraithverge. If you're really going to go for a 4-weapon-only roster per character, then each individual weapon better be really in-depth and fun to use or else you're just going to make your combat incredibly simple and boring for no reason.

As for Singularity, man, that game is good, damn good in fact, but after I found out what their original plans were for that, and some weird design choices (like the 2-weapon limit, the game allows you to carry ammo for weapons you're not carrying, which is obviously because you were originally meant to be able to carry them all), it became apparent to me that the game gets so close to greatness, and yet never gets there, just like me. It could've been Raven's Bioshock, man, with a longer and more ambitious campaign it could've become an all-time classic known by everyone, just like Bioshock, instead of just being a cult hit.

I looked up the online walkthrough twice while playing it, for two instances in a level after midway in the game. Hexen and Thief are my two favourite PC games! In high school I started to play Hexen 2 with the Necromancer and got to Egypt. I do not remember consulting a walkthrough for this one, though I am not entirely sure. Even though I have not played Hexen 2 since then I shall pick it up again and finally complete it! I don't actually remember any of the puzzles except for a bit at Blackmarsh. Have to do this on hardest difficulty without consulting any guides or tips. This is why everytime i watch a Gmanlives Hexen review i always revert my gaze whenever there's Eidolon footage. If you get lobotomized and have all your memories of its development removed, the System Shock remake seems like a kinda middling-good indie game from 2013 or 2014. Unfortunately it's a sprawling train wreck that took 9 years to make, still hasn't delivered backer rewards from 2016 and added and subtracted random bullshit to and from the game willy-nilly. "Hexen II is Hexen on meth" got me rofl. Also, I hope they will get a chance for a new Hexen game with the latest and greatest iD Tech engine. And maybe Xbox will think of a revival for Quake too... (it doesn't matter if a new Quake game will be made by Raven or not‚ I just want a new Quake game).

Raven was really something special. In the days of less internet, if I saw their logo on a PC game in the store, I just assumed it was good. Our family didn't have the best computer for a long time, but I loved just looking at big box games.

A shame really, Heretic should be getting the DOOM treatment, modernized and more metal than ever, on the other hand I'm not sure on how could they implement obscure puzzles without bringing the pase to a crawl, maybe in a similar way Uncharted does it, with exploration sections between bombastic and fast paced combat arenas.

I don't know if the same people who work at the company back then are still at Raven, but they are (or were) very talented people, and they developed two of my favorite games, X-Men Legends 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. The love and care that they had for these two games was amazing, and until this day they are two of the best superhero games ever made.

Man, 1997 was Quake 2. Duke was 1996, like Quake. But I remember that in some reviews people said that they prefer The aesthetic of hexen2 instead of Quake 2. Thanks for the video.

Yeah, the problem is not that it was being compared to Quake or Duke Nukem 3D (which came out over a year before each) or Blood or Shadow Warrior (which it blew out of the water graphically), but just because a million sales was a mind-blowingly huge figure back then and this was a satellite studio. I have no doubt that the majority of the viewers of this channel almost exclusively dedicated to "boomer shooters" were hardly even alive in 1997 and probably played most of the Raven games on the console. The market for Duke Nukem 3D was in cartoon characters saying the movie lines and watching scripted events and the market for Quake was deathmatch tryhards. There's no room for Hexen 2 here.

I bought Wolfenstein 2009 for my 360 in its release week. It was so good! Surreal and bizarre in the best way. Its boss fights were terrible though. Singularity was another one I bought as soon as it came out. My marriage at the time was falling apart but Singularity and Bioshock 2 (which released a few months prior) gave me some escape from a situation I felt like I couldn’t do much about. I’ve always enjoyed Raven games and I’m grateful for this video. Big Ups!

I know we say this with each passing generation but it really is crazy how the graphics of the 360/PS3 era are starting to show their age, mostly in character models and motions aside from environments, but it is starting to happen. Though some games might be immune from it.

Singularity may have been their last game, but it was originally an unplayable mess of an Alpha when their Publisher pulled the plug and shut them down. A group of devs got together, worked on it in their free time for 10 months, and released the game in its current state. It honestly shows that when the devs are not bound by publisher demands, are left to do what they want, they can deliver an experience worth remembering, even if short. I want to see the Call of Duty chains taken off, and let them make something without restrictions.
