Max Yuryev I still bought it. I would like to know if this is an improvement over the Gh4's AF system. For me, I have a lot of FF Nikon glass already. If anything this makes me question buying native m43 glass. Not the GH5. Thanks for the hard work!

Yes. No way reliable continuous video AF can be implemented without phase detection technology, and today only Canon and Sony has the technology. Panasonic was crazy not asking Sony to make PDAF into this m43 sensor, it would have been a killer. The A6500 kills this GH5 any moment in a number of arenas.
@MaksimYuryev
@MaksimYuryev 7 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Sony makes the 20.4MP Olympus E-M1 mark II sensor and it has phase detection where the Sony 20.3MP sensor in the GH5 doesn't have it. It seems to be Panasonic's choice. Sony even makes the Samsung Galaxy S7 "Dual Pixel" sensor.

Max! Thanks SO much for making this! We just got our GH5 and we're trying to figure out how to get the most out of it. We'll definitely give you a shout out. It seems like the AF points are actually wider than it shows on the screen, and if it can find something in focus outside of the specified AF points, it'll be satisfied and not hunt for focus. Perhaps using even fewer AF points, or a smaller AF point, would help it find new subjects?

Tony & Chelsea Northrup No problem thanks for watching! If you guys have any input I'd love to hear it. I'm currently speaking to Panasonic about it. It does seem like the it is reading wider than it displays. Single point works better but for any sort of tracking or movement single point is hard to use unless you can be very predictable with it like in our test setup inside. We will have another video out tomorrow comparing to a6500 and with one of the tests we had to set to single because wide or zone would not pick up the subject even though it was clearly dominant and in the center of frame.

Tony & Chelsea Northrup Two weeks ago at Photoshow Panasonic could not gave me an answer about slow AF on GH5. I was very disappointed with this model
@AANasseh
@AANasseh 7 жыл бұрын
The AF is not slow. It's super fast. You just have to half press the shutter button and it catches focus super fast. The press all the way and it records. And turn the continuous AF off! It should be AF Single. Who needs the focus to change and for the camera to keep track during recording. You focus and begin recording. That's AF, not continuous AF! If you want the camera to pull focus for you use Focus Transitions!

Reading the comments on your channel is like dealing with grief counselling: first there is denial (it can't be that bad, so and so is getting great results!), then anger (you did it wrong), then bargaining (can you recheck, is yours a bad copy, can firmware fix it), then depression (man, I was hoping this would replace my old cam), and lastly, acceptance (guess Sony/Canon is better).

@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 7 жыл бұрын
Its the only reason why I have kept the a6300. I use it to shoot all my yt videos. You just set it up and it tracks AF like you want it to. Overheating aside its been way more reliable than my A7Rii ever was. But I still want that GH5. 4k 60fps, battery life, low rolling shutter, and no overheating! The a6300 and GH5 will be a good combo with some speed boosters and share same Canon glass for MF and then keep the Sony 10-18 on the RoninM for AF. Anyway thanks again for the test. I know how much work goes into it.

The 6300 is a monster of a camera. I recently sold mine, and now I have an olympus because the IBIS is literally second to none. But there is NO beating the 4k quality and phase detect autofocus on the Sony A6xx series in that price point. I may just buy another one.
@poman911

You can eliminate the overheating by putting it on a cage. Battery life with an external battery set up that Max had shown. There is a hack to get rid of the 30 minute limit. Rolling shitter ... I pan very slowly and then speed it up during edit. Everyone is blown away everytime they see my a6300 video in the 4K 24fps mode.

It seems like it may be because of a poor matching of sensor resolution and slow DSP from Panasonic and the fact that they rely on Contrast AF system. In contrast AF systems, DSP (Digital Signal Processor) has to scan every frame of an image vertically and horizontally to detect edges of visible objects and adjust it's focus until edges become the smallest (sharpest). This process happens on every frame of an image and the bigger the image resolution the more time it takes (a process that generally shouldn't be parallelised because dividing image into smaller chunks negatively affects edge detection algorithm) hence requiring a very fast DSP chip in order to be able to do so effectively. Also the higher the frame rate the more edge data it can gather and the faster in can focus. I'd love to be wrong here but your findings with zone focusing being the most reliable only confirm that. In zone focusing mode, the DSP scans selected area of an image significantly reducing amount of lines it has to go through to detect edges. Sometimes only basic edge detection is applied outside that area but that depends on manufacturer's implementation. The fact that it rack focus so poorly in that mode would suggest a software issue and adjusting area weighting in future firmwares could improve that. Also notice that AF performance was generally good whenever your assistant went out of the frame so that only the door with its strong pattern was left. The more distinct the pattern the easier it is to focus using contrast detection. I suppose you could try testing its AF on various surfaces to investigate this behaviour further if you'd have time but I think results will be close to what I'm talking about. Good video Max. You do a lot of in-depth testing, results of which can show technical limitations of various bodies especially to someone who understands underlying digital signal processing techniques. You're my go to guy for camera reviews.

there's a hugely long dpreview thread on the subject despite 99% of them never having seen the gh5. and i've read pages and pages of stuff and watched hours of video and yet i've never heard a single person quote this from the advanced manual: "To ensure highly accurate focus, 4K motion pictures are recorded at reduced Auto Focus speeds. It may be difficult to focus on the subject with Auto Focus, but this is not a malfunction."
@ovidiudan1641

Isn't that kind of a contradiction? It's like saying ... to ensure good focus in 4K, we're going to give you worse focus when you focus on a subject. Also, Max found 4K 60fps has the fastest focus (same as or slightly faster than 1080p 60fps).

I have not read all the posts here so forgive me if I am repeating things already mentioned. For pro video work we never rely on auto : focus, exposure, white balance, gain, aperture, shutter speed or auto audio. This may not be helpful for photographers who have become accustomed to auto everything, but there is nothing worse than a camera hunting for focus or adjusting exposure whilst action is in progress. Having said that, thank you for producing a very informative review.

Thanks for doing this video. The kind of testing I think is most relevant is the one you are doing at 15:04, handheld pointing and following your actor. That's where I hope Locked on will stay locked on well when moving walking around. I try to understand how +3 responsive is more responsive, though the mode that I was thinking might eliminate focus hunting would be Locked on face/object and then quick responsive change autofocus only when clicking on the screen again if for example to track something else. In your test it seems you mostly just set region point(s) and let it try to detect and auto focus by itself? Hopefully they can bring up all the framerate modes to same autofocus performance as for 4K60p with a firmware update? hopefully this can be improved. To be honest I've posted hundreds (maybe thousands) of videos filmed with GH3 on my channel in 2013-2015 that often had bad auto-focus performance (hunting, loosing focus, focusing on background, etc..), I skipped GH4, I was hoping GH5 improves autofocus by a lot.

I wish out of 100s of "reviewers" for mobile phones or other equipment at least one would have been as thorough as you are. excellent work. I am in dilemma between gh5 and 5d mark iv. is it possible to make an AF video comparison between these two?

Thx Max, you delivered, and did a great job. I was one of the one's who asked for you to redo your tests! Wow did you ever! I can see that there's NO question that the GH5 AF sucks! I haven't received mine yet from B&H so I can only go by what people have put out there on KZbin. This was very disappointing but the truth must be told. Looks like I could be sending mine back if this is the case :'(

I think it makes sense that 60 frames instead of 24 is performing better. I guess it probably means two things: 1. It gets more data per second to analyze. 2. The 60p frame data has smaller incremental changes than in 24p, so it's probably easier to catch movement when changes are small? The Fujis also show this behaviour.

Thanks so much for tearing into this with so much depth, Max. I know Panasonic has big plans for the upcoming firmware updates. Maybe they'll do some work on the AF.

It's been much worse than I expected. Seeing the same results as you. Point to point is good but continuous is horrible. Really nice tests Max

Yes point to point is very good. The GH4 was the same, I used manual focus with the touch AF to set focus all the time! Thanks for confirming this Dan.

Thanks for putting in all the hard work Max. I was hoping that the GH5 would be my NX1 replacement. I think that without better AF I'll have to do some more thinking, I do a bunch of my work on a steadicam.

Does anyone with a GH5 know how to get it to autofocus before recording? I have it set to AFC with continuous AF turned on but it won't autofocus until I hit the record button. Thanks in advance!

Outstanding effort, thanks, Max! My conclusion: Canon should ritually set itself on fire for not taking advantage of its dual-pixel AF. If they put 4K, IBIS, proper auto-ISO, and decent codec into M5 (and most of it is sitting on their shelves), they would wipe the floor with competition.

Thank you sharing. I have always used autofocus as a guide to get me started where I want to be before popping it into manual and using peaking. That being said, I use autofocus a lot for processionals during weddings. I have been excited to be able to shoot processionals at 4K60fps with autofocus so I preordered the GH5 the day it was possible to do so. I have been experimenting with the "processional" situation to find a setting that works well since that is the single most common situation when I will use it. The rest of the time I'm using the camera, I won't care about autofocus. I used the Olympus 75mm wide open at 1.8 and just bumped up SS. I had my son walk up and down the sidewalk both with and without a friend behind him in order to imitate both a bridal party procession and the bride by herself. I had him walk in shade with a sunny background that was very contrasty. What I have found is that the the AF Mode with a zoned auto focus area works better than face detection, target, or 225 point area. I have also found that AF speed is working great all the way at max (5). I have sensitivity at 0 and have found some pulsing, but very minimal. I may tweak the speed and sensitivity, but right now I am happy with these settings since i didn't see much hunting and was able to follow him sharply for the nearly 30 foot procession at a fast pace. Would love to know if anyone else has done a similar test and what results you found work well for the same situation/use.

Max, could you do AF test with the 12-60mm? I've been told by some that the AF varies from lens to lens.

+OperatorSJY We did in our first video ($999 12-60 F2.8-F4 Leica) It seemed to do worse than our 12-35 2.8 and about on par with the 45mm 1.8 Olympus. Because of this we used the 12-35 2.8 in the video your commenting on.

Thanks for the quick reply. This camera seems to have the almost all of the figures I'm looking for. Just not sure how I'm going to like it if I'm going to vlog in an uncontrolled environment - I'm scared that the camera will do a lot of hunting and mess up the focus when I'm talking to the camera while walking down streets, airports, in cars, etc. I think in a controlled environment, once you have it on focus, you can just switch it to manual and you are good to go. But in uncontrolled environment, I'm not so sure.

Thanks for this! Could autofocus be fixed through a firmware update or will we have to wait for the GH6? Trying to decide whether to switch from my 70D now or wait.

Max you are the best camera reviewer on KZbin - and I am not accusing you of bias or bad testing procedures. I will do a test for KZbin this weekend at your suggested using 2.8 and post the results on KZbin Monday on my daughter's KZbin channel (I will link it here also). My primary uses for the GH5 are slow paced walking videos on a fairly even surface and sit down interviews using a Tripod.

Focus performance is very similar to Samsung nx1 based on my experience. I'm one of those people that need simple accurate AF and I'm thinking the Canon 5D IV might be the contender here if the new firmware improves the crop factor and codec.... On my Canon C100, dual pixel AF is dead simple and dead on. There's not a tracking option or anything, I just focus in the center or grab focus and lock on and off with a button. But I really want 4K60! Ugh. I may have to consider a manual pull focus gear and hope the peaking on the GH5 is great... How is the peaking in manual focus mode?
