I really wish Eastern and Western companies would publish the original script (if the writer/s consent to it, of course) when there’s these instances of super long scripts that get shaved down. I wouldn’t expect translations to be done whatsoever. Or let the script writers take their scripts and the company company publishes an “official” or “spin-off” book while the rest of the company is working on an in-development, for example. I love things like the cutting room floor, and I wish such a thing existed for scripts as well!

Also iirc in the three routes (specially Revelation) it's helluva implied Gunter at one point climbed Notre Saggese(?) and was blessed by the old dragon living in it or something just like Xander, Garon and Sumeragi, but nothing is ever really done with this plot point for some reason. Perhaps the purpose of that was present in the original script?
@MogofWar3 жыл бұрын
@@moltz4866 It's Strongly implied that When Garon, Sumeragi, and Gunter climbed the mountain it was at the same time, in a single group, that the three had adventured together back when both were mere princes and neither expected to inherit the thrones of their respective kingdoms. Then life happened. Sumeragi's elder sibling dies, Garon's older brother goes mad and has to be put down for the safety of the realm and prince Garon's young children, and things proceeded from there... I don't know how much of this I gleaned the the story or how much of this was my sleep deprived fever-dreams...
@MogofWar3 жыл бұрын
@@justinianthe1st790 Perhaps were no actual clues in any direction, but after playing Conquest and Birthright but not knowing about Revalations, regardless of what the narrative suggested or didn't, I was left the distinct impression that Garon was Corrin's actual father.... but we get Anankos instead. Because Mikoto is not the biological mother of any of the Hoshidan Royals, and she apparently Wed Sumeragi already pregnant with Corrin... And Garon seemed dead set on abducting the Youngest child. These were things we knew, and what does that point when you don't know of Anankos or Arete or Valla because you haven't played Revalations yet? But what we do know was Azura, a year older than Corrin, was the daughter of King Garon's brother, who Garon killed in order to become king himself, then Mikoto turns up in Hoshido, having fled her husband, and very quickly marries King Sumeragi while pregnant with Corrin(who has Nhorian features no matter how you customize him or her.). A few years later King Sumeragi gets murked and Corrin gets captured. The Hoshidans get Azura... So if you have this time-line but don't realize that Anankos is Corrin's father or that Valla exists, it's not that big a leap to think... Maybe Mikoto had the been the wife of Prince Garon's brother. Who fled from Nhor to Hoshido a short time after the coup, then married King Sumeragi. In this version events Garon took his brother's wife when he took the throne, but she refused to marry her husband's killer and fled, but was lucky to escape with her own life. Gets to Hoshido (her homeland in this version because we have no informationabout Valla) seeks asylum with Sumeragi who grants it because she was his childhood sweetheart before she got married off to the Nhorian crown prince. He marries her pretty quickly and she becomes queen when his first wife dies in childbirth. (Sakura has double survivors guilt because her mother died giving birth to her, and because Kaze protected her instead of Corrin... And while the other royals don't blame Sakura, some of the nobles seem to because, while it's entirely irrational for her to blame herself or for anyone elseto blame her, the fact that her mother died giving birth to her means superstitious folk will see her as unlucky so she ends up socially ostracized as if Corrin's abduction is her fault even though nobody blames her... incidentally Kaze's guilt derrives from the fact that his job was to guard Corrin but he guarded Sakura instead... ) This begs the question, why the kid exchange happened? Mikoto arranged it, thinking to exchange Sakura for Azura,(remember Sakura was Garon's original abduction target, but he ended up with Corrin instead) Sumeragi ended up dead because he tried to interfere, and Garon was ruthless. I get it, that's mostly speculation, but you know what the weirdest part of all of this is... if this had been the flow of things it wouldn't have changed the the Story of Revalations hardly any at all. Corrin's unique connection to Anankos would have still been a central point to the plot. (Although having Corrin be related by blood to both sets of siblings and Azura be both his/her cousin and half sister would have been a total mindfuck...) And either way it was Mikoto and Azura's "Nana" in Hoshido who had been the ones to teach Azura the Vallan magics... So the connections to Valla and Anankos would still be properly established, but by slightly different means.

That's how I feel. Sure, the "Robin is Validar's child" twist was lame, but the writers were at least trying to create something good. Using Marth's descendants to engage the old fans and even fans from the Super Smash Bros. series was an understandable action considering Awakening was supposed to be the last game; not to mention it's as if the series went full circle and finished in the world it began in. The characters were also more understated and relatable than the exaggeratedly wacky cast of Fates. I think the "censorship" with the corrin/soleil support was fine, because unless I'm misremembering, it didn't remove the "gay conversion therapy" thing (because that's not what was happening at all, the problem wasn't that she loved girls but rather that she would *faint* just from talking to a pretty one, imagine the consequences of passing out in the middle of a battle - she could get killed) but instead changed the "oh yeah i slipped some magic powder in your drink when you weren't looking" part to something else. That bit seems like a justified removal, even if Corrin had good intentions I can see easily why it made so many people uncomfortable, it's not behavior fitting for a hero (especially not when they're the protagonist).

7:40 Actually I'm not surprised at all, because I remember it like it was yesterday. Nintendo was bragging about how they got this professional manga author who scoffed at Awakening's story to write the plot for Fates, and much of the marketing was revolved around, "yes, we heard you, and the story is better this time, we promise." This is why, despite Fates being universally recognized as a superior gameplay experience to Awakening, I never ended up getting Fates, simply for its ultimate failure to live up to that expectation they themselves set. . . . insult to injury being that I actually liked Awakening's story, at least the first time around, and if you ignore the Act II Valm arc completely.
@damonrichardson19993 жыл бұрын
That saddens me that Valla wasn't even a thought until later. The execution was so messy that they weren't able to flesh everything out. Valla was hinted to heavily so it's strange that they just shoved it in rather than building it up more and fleshing it out. It was like the story was barfed out and it just said "Yep, this is how it all is". I just think that Revelations could have been implemented more carefully and that it could have been great if they weren't just separate writers and they all joined together to let it all flow better. If they fixed those bizarre split personalities (Xander especially), they could have fleshed out the characters and stories even more.

I loved Fates's concept but hated its execution. The, uh... "fun" of choosing your path at the cash register rather infuriated me. I wanted the special edition that had all three paths on the cartridge, which would have allowed me to make a choice organically AFTER playing the intro, but Nintendo in their infinite wisdom made about five copies for the eBay scalpers and called it a day. I wound up not buying the game at all until a year later, when I picked up Birthright, and quickly got frustrated with how powerless it feels to make one relevant decision and then have no further input. This is a game that pits you against loved ones on either path, yet allows no attempt to reason with them. I'm supposed to just accept that my big sister wants to cleave me in two and that nothing will change her mind. Personal relations influencing battle is not a new thing to the franchise; Radiant Dawn showed two opposing paths simultaneously and was able to implement personal connections into gameplay to much greater success, with numerous characters that either changed sides or refused to battle when faced with specific opponents. And ugh, the censorship and the missing DLC, both are inexcusable. I would say that this game badly needs a remaster on the Switch, but the problem is that if Tokyo Mirage Sessions was any indication, they will fix exactly nothing, and may even just bring western problems back home to Japan...

I feel like 3H does what Fates wanted to do with the conflicting forces you can choose between, but even that has constraints and doesn't quite have the exact same angle that Fates was trying to pull off. Both have a particular flaw that drives me up the wall, too: The "dark" or "invading" routes aren't as in depth as I wanted. For instance, 3H doesn't pay enough respects to Edel's route, making it shorter and stripping away all story emphasis through lack of transitional scenes/cutscenes. There are reasons behind Edel's actions, sure, but the game rarely slows down to justify them in her own route. You can actually learn to empathise with her more through the BL portrayal of her! In the end, you kind of just do whatever Edel orders until the game ends and she straight up beats the final bad guys in her epilogue without you (no one would argue at joining Edel in clinically removing the Slithers from existence for all the crap they put her and Byleth through, I think). Similarly, Conquest feels like you're just doing whatever Garon tells you to do with minimal inbetweens and development. The big difference is that the Nohrian siblings aren't fighting because they want to, rather because they have to. Sadly, Conquest isn't a story where Corrin uses smarts and intrigue to fell the regime from the inside. Xander and Camilla hardly go against Garon's orders at all, although Elise and Leo do try to be a bit sneaky sometimes. Everything is all about tip-toeing around Mr King Evil and his stringy sidekick's saturday morning villain schemes. Things do turn around in the final chapters with Corrin asking their siblings to march in on Garon on the Throne of Truth, killing that irritating masked sorcerer on the way, but there's really not much intrigue before that. Worse still is Azura dissapearing with no warning, as if saying "lmao guess you'll have to play Revelations to figure out why _this_ is happening". In the end, I guess it was my fault for having high hopes. I really wanted to see a story that would be theoretically be like being stuck with Lyon from Sacred Stones while he's possessed/influenced (Garon and Nohr equivalent) or fighting for Walhart from Awakening as he campaigns across Ylisse to forcefully squash Grima's summoning (CF and Edel equivalent), but it simply doesn't exist.
@madamebkrt3 жыл бұрын
Well said! I don't like Edelgard at all, but her route was so sloppy and didn't do her justice unlike Dimitri and Claude in their routes. You are very right that most of El's route is her telling Byleth what to do and Byleth just doing it, while she keeps a bunch of secrets between herself and Hubert. Despite Byleth perhaps being more important in the Crimson Flower route than any other route barring Silver Snow, he/she is treated as irrelevant aside from being a reliable swordsman and El's occasional shoulder to cry on. Although personally I also think that 3H would have been a better game overall if it had been modified to exclude Byleth entirely and just have you choose one of the three Lords, *or* change Byleth's character up a bit and have him/her be an established character in their own right and not an avatar, so Silver Snow could still exist and Byleth could be an interesting ally or adversary depending on your route, perhaps in a similar way to Berkut in Shadows of Valentia being the second biggest rival to Alm after Rudolph (not counting Duma or Jedah as the latter is more Celica's foe) - Byleth could be that, but to Rhea. And the irrelevant character of Cyril could be removed entirely as Rhea's defacto child or whatever he was supposed to be. Excuse the tangent... I was so excited to play Conquest initially as I thought a more dark Corrin could be fun, and I assumed he/she would have started out on Garon's side, or at least trying to justify his/her decision to follow Garon until eventually Garon's madness became too much to ignore and then there would be a massive rift between the powers that be in Nohr. That's what I assumed...So having Corrin and Co do Garon's every bidding with that ridiculous pacifistic twist to each mission surprised me a lot. Unfortunately Nohr and Hoshido were presented as so black and white, so it seemed that the only way the writers could possibly justify Corrin sticking with the unrealistically evil Nohr was to make him/her the most naive, idealistic idiot who is "simply too kind for your own good". I do think the game would have benefitted from both countries not being so black and white. They should both have more understandable motives and have a combination of good and questionable people among the high-ranking nobility, instead of everyone in Nohr being evil except for the royal siblings, and everyone in Hoshido being good...including the royal siblings. There is such little nuance in Fates. But out of all the Fire Emblem's I've played (Awakening, Fates, SoV - my favourite despite hating Rudolph and having issues with Alm and his rise to power haha, 3H) I found issues in all their stories so I have personally stopped looking to Fire Emblem for superb storytelling...The games are so fun to play though, and the premise of it all is fantastic and full of great potential. It's a shame that each time that potential is at least slightly wasted.

I mean, the composers did an outstanding job creating three different types of music, adapting each sountrack to the route (using different instruments from each culture, so it is indisputable the fact that you can say when you are hearing something from Conquest or not) and the context of the battle (Revelations ost mostly, or even Torns in your). Goddamn it I love it.

Great video Ghast! How about you should talk about the Fire Emblem like the thing? There are several of them and it would be nice to know how each one is important or significant for each game/universe As much as I like Fates and 3H's story route splits, it would be nice to have a single route next time.
@justinianthe1st7903 жыл бұрын
Yeah the Fire Emblem(s) never really gets talked about in the fandom despite being a literal divine item that determines what happens in the story. I can only assume because sometimes its just something to hand wave or quickly explain something. But I guess Medieval fantasy the game doesnt sound as iconic as Fire Emblem.

I quite enjoyed Fates and it's story. The only part I did not like was Cotton not actually being related to any the Hoshidan siblings. Kinda defeated the whole purpose of fates when they were supposed to be your bloodline and they just end up being adoptive siblings who you don't remember. All just to be able to marry them.

As someone with a history in Process and Systems Design and Qualification, even 9 minutes in, I'm getting anxious. It feels like there's no one person who is in charge of the vision for the game, or even realistic stated project goals. It's trying to be too many things to too many people all at the same time and it sounds like they just kept adding more. This is just talking about within the development team. Localization would have been a nightmare just with the plot as it is, requiring so much Japanese cultural context. I'm not even talking about the 'changes' and such. I mean just all the subtleties in dialogue and such. It's why they had to insert lines to explain things that you would be expected to pick up on just in a 'read the room' kind of way in a Japanese cultural context, etc.

This is why fate need a remake completely alongside other games in the series. Also having the avatar being the protagonist is not a good move you should be a random villager like Donald or Mozu tbh. Again games should release as they are intended without interference to the story to avoid problems altogether

Before watching this video I was always one to kind use Synthese as a scapegoat for some of the writing (their name being tied to mediocre parts of Ace Attorney biases me somewhat) but now it feels more complicated. 17:03 More about the Korean version. It was more expensive as a result of having both routes. It retailed for 69k KRW (Revelations DLC for 20k KRW), as a comparison point Echoes retailed for 59k KRW but apparently 3DS games generally retailed for 49k KRW (Echoes is speculated to have cost more because of a fast release and having Japanese voices). It is claimed the Korean version of Fates uses the English voice acting because Nintendo Korea couldn't afford to license the Japanese voices. Features-wise it resembles the English version (e.g. lack of swimsuits), but most of the script is Japanese version (cutscene subtitles, my room are based off English). Most characters have English version names too (apparently ones introduced in Smash Bros have their Japanese names?). Korean Fates released September 8, 2016 while Echoes followed July 13, 2017. 17:07 It seems Hong Kong and Taiwan only got Birthright at retail (in Japanese only too, like many 3DS games released in that region) so if you wanted Conquest only you would have to get the eShop version and choose to side with Nohr. 5:57 Did you mean weight, durability or both? The thing about weight is New Mystery and Awakening had already removed it (found it a bit strange how I noticed discussion pieces about how removing weight would "ruin Fire Emblem" occurred in the run up to Fates). In that sense I feel the weapon balancing is finding a replacement for the low durability con that many typically strong weapons have. Thoughts on localisation. Kind of blank to be honest. I used to be the kind of person irked by minor changes like Stella > Astrid, Jeigan > Jagan so being a bit older perhaps I'm burned out or realise it didn't matter a great deal. There is also the matter at how some exploited and dramatised the changes for harassment campaigns.

I'd have liked to see what the original draft of the script was like. I've also been really interested in the original idea that Kagero was going to be a sibling rather than Ryoma's retainer and Hinoka only exists because of what was basically a doodle Kozaki did on his off time.

How do you make a character who's 95% of dialogue is about how she's attracted to women, to the point that most of her S-Supports are actually her turning down guys, and still deciding "We're only going to have one gay option per gender, and the female option is just Tharja"? IS is just "1 step forward, 2 steps back" on repeat

@armorbearer970211 ай бұрын
(16:36) It's a shame that Hoshidan racism is not more present in the Birthright story. It could be interesting if Hoshidian racism is one of the reasons why Nohr has not been crushed by rebellions. Despite King Garon being a horrible tyrant, his war with Hoshido is the best course of action for people and states within Nohr. If any state tried to rebel, they would have to worry about being crushed by the Nohr army and being raided by Hoshidans. Because Corrin chooses to side with Hoshido, Ryoma decides that he needs to take a different approach with the Nohrian people. He realizes many of them are decent people that would rebel against Garon if supported. Ryoma reaches out to Scarlet and aid in her rebellion. After the battle, Ryoma announces that Hoshido officially recognizes Cheve as an independent nation and a treasured ally.
