If you visit I think it's worth every minute of time to dwell long enough, or leave and return, to see it opening and closing..... There's more than enough else in St. Bavo to occupy a full day, even if one doesn't spend an entire day at the Altarpiece. If you must choose one, then I think the opening the most dramatic and impressive. But its closing also has a resonance all its own.... St. Bavo's has added a VR program associated, and it's exceptionally well done, well worth the price and time.

Thank you for your great presentation and content. I have seen this wonderful work of Art twice. I live in Ireland but travel to Brussels. I hope to go again shortly. A few thoughts .. One is that this painting is also called "the Mystical Lamb of God" and the spiritual side of this painting has many layers just like the many layers of paint on the canvas and the battles the painting had to encounter. The spiritual teaching from this painting represents Catholic teaching before the reformation, I would say some changes were made as Protestant theology developed. The Dominican order were the theologians and biblical advisors to the artists at the time so they would have influenced the painting. Also this painting reminds me of the Apprition of Our Lady in Knock in Ireland where on the evening of the 21st of August 1879, a Apparition occurred at the gable wall of the Parish Church which is also named after St John the Baptist, when Our Lady appeared with a crown (Rev 12), in the company of St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist. Unique to the Knock the Apparition, the people saw the presence of the Eucharistic Lamb on the Alter in front of a Cross, standing upon an altar and surrounded by Angels. No words were spoken. The Apparition lasted for about two hours and 15 people witnessed the apprition and gave their testimonies to a church enquiry. In scripture Jn 1:29 when John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him he said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" The same Jesus is in the Eucharist today, 🙏

A small correction: the Erythraean sybil was from the ancient city Erythrae, which is situated in modern day Turkey. She was not from the African country Eritrea. The Erythraean sybil gave her profecies in acrostic, maybe that's why the first letter in the scroll is in the color red...? Nice video, looking forward to more content from you. Cheers!

I traveled to Sabina Belgium airlines for a 4 month stay in Florence Italy because on the way back I HAD to go to Belgium JUST to get to Ghent to see this altarpiece. I met some American nurses that were also going to Ghent and when they found out it was my only reason for being in country they asked to come along. They were so very glad that the did! I enjoyed my entire stay in Belgium and even as a student of the Italian Renaissance one MUST see Northern Renaissance items in person. They are MAGIC!

This has given me the education and understanding I've long needed and wanted for the Ghent Altarpiece. I've figured out most of it over the years, but other parts of it have been a mystery...but, thanks to you, no longer. By the way...in the Annunciation with the Angel Gabriel and the Blesed Virgin, she isn't bored, she's showing her obedience to God and her acceptance of what He's asking of her. And that's a dove over her head, not a pigeon. It signifies the Holy Spirit. Your video has been not only truly educational for me in learning the history of this great work of art...and all the craziness it's been through...it's also wonderful to find out that much overpainting has been discovered and removed and the original images are restored. The work looks good, too. I worry about restorations, I've seen some really bad ones...you can see examples of it in the Sistine Ceiling, and, God help us, on DaVincis in the Louvre. I'm so very glad our Monuments Men rescued the Altarpiece from the Nazis, among so many other great works that would have been lost to us. So many are still hidden away somewhere...I think many are still in Germany...and in Russia. Anyway...wonderful video, I've subscribed, and keep up the great work. You're giving joy to an old gray haired painter who loves the masterworks of the old times. Thank you!

Very interesting presentation in light of recent restoration campaigns. Just a couple of minor issues; The clear glass vessel in on the outer panels has a well established symbolic representation of the virginity of Mary since the light passes through the vessel without breaking it so Mary conceives without the loss of her virginity. Also it is a dove above her head, not a pigeon. On the Mystic Lamb panels the martyrs dressed in red, St.Stephen dressed as a deacon, not a bishop as he was never a bishop. One aspect that I do seriously question is the idea that Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy's son was baptized in the Vijd chapel. We do know that his son was baptized on the Feast of St.John at the Latin Gate on May 6th by the bishop Winchester, however, given that it would have been an event of state ceremony rather than a private event, it does not seem likely that it would have been conducted in a relatively small chantry chapel off the south ambulatory of the church. As a chantry chapel's function is to say masses for the souls of the founders in perpetuity, it is a relatively small space. Given that the ceremony was conducted by the Bishop of Winchester and his attendants, the clergy of St. John.s church, the ducal and civic officials of Ghent in attendance, not to mention the choir of the church, I don't imagine that even some of those people would have been able to fit into that space and the surrounding aisle an any way that would have enable the ceremony to happen on anything resembling a princely scale.

I must have watched this video 6 times over the last 2 years because I so love this work of art, and the close-ups here give about as close a look as I am ever likely to get. Carel has provided so much information that I would not easily acquire otherwise. Now, I also sometimes catch details that I might return some information about. The Eritrean sibyl was not located in Africa. This is a common and old misconception. The alternative spelling of where this sibyl resided is Erythrae which was in ancient Greek Ionia (modern day Anatolia). That is why perhaps van Eyck portrays her in a sort of Turkish garb since the Ottoman Turks had conquered that region a century before van Eyck's time. Still, the sibyls were not Turkic. There is a medieval myth that the Erythraean sibyl was a prophetess who predicted the coming of Christ hence van Eyck's s placement of her. (She appears also in other medieval art works.) I recall there was also a town in Italy in ancient times that had a very similar name to Eritrea. It may not be astonishing that van Eyck possessed substantial knowledge of Latin but there is a lot of Greek embroidered in the clothing here, and very few in Europe knew that language. I suppose van Eyck resorted to a clerical scholar at some point in his work. The theft of the Just Judges figures significantly in Albert Camus's novel La Chute (The Fall).

When it was put in the glass enclosure and I had the time to study the finer details of flowers , probably used by 2 or 3 sabel hair brushes. The 3 time I was there with family and friend who got bored and waited for me for 1/2 hour sitting in the square watching a billboard, eating an ice cream. I also have a booklet that analyses the hymn being song, can’t find it now to quote the details. Thanks for this talk, from Tasmania, I wont be seeing the Lamb again.

Great video! I have a question though: at around 43:06 there is a man in the crowd looking straight at us. If we think that the left panel is a self-portrait of Van Eyck because it looks like him, but also because he is looking straight at us, then what could this other man mean? Do you think that it was made as a choice for symmetry (left, middle as in the lamb, right)? I was wondering, because the man on the right's sight is very piercing and it was the first thing I noticed and could not keep my eyes away from his stare.

Hi Carel I enjoy watching your videos but I really can't understand why all of your videos are of inferior 720p quality??? Especially when you're doing a video of such an important and no doubt one of the most beautiful and intricate artworks in existence, the Ghent Altarpiece!! If you're showing us artworks like this then please respect them by showing them in all their glory in high quality 4K or even 1080p!! There are cameras out there that offer high quality resolution at really low prices. Can you please do yourself a favour and more importantly, do your viewers a favour and show these beautiful artworks in the highest video quality possible so we can see the details in depth instead of getting fuzzy images when you zoom in on the finer details of the artworks. Like I said, 4K cameras are really cheap these days and would improve your videos to no end as we'll be able to see all the intricate details of the artworks as the artists themselves intended. If they were alive today they'd be very disappointed to not be able to see all the finer details in their works which they laboured over for days and weeks. For comparison, I just watched a Till-Holger Borchert video about Jan Van Eyk on the VISITFLANDERS channel and what a stark difference that was. That video was done in 1080p resolution and it really showed just how poor quality your videos really are. We were able to see all the finer details in the paintings on that other video compared to yours. PLEASE DO SOMETHING FOR YOUR VIEWERS AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF YOUR VIDEOS!! YOU OWE IT TO THE ARTISTS WHOSE WORKS YOU ARE HIGHLIGHTING!!!!

There is a reasonable explanation for his grasp of perspective and realism even before the theory of perspective was developed. David Hockney and others have argued that van Eyck was one of the first artists to use optical aids to enable him to paint realistic figures. Certainly this is one of the first pieces of art to ever achieve the sort of realism displayed. The statues, for example, are stunningly realistic in a way that modern people might describe as photographic, especially in how the shadows are depicted (there are also amazingly realistic shadow effects on other front panels). Whatever techniques he used this is a landmark in the history or art (and, if he used optical aids to achieve the effects, also a landmark in the history of technology).
@storiesofart4 жыл бұрын
That is true for some smaller objects. Hockney talked about the chandelier in the Arnolfini portrait. Of course he used every technique he could. It also helped that he was exceptionally good at painting. I, for instance, have optical aids at my disposal that Van Eyck could not even have dreamed of. Still, my paintings will never come near his in quality.
@Robalogot3 жыл бұрын
While he certainly argued that, the vast majority of historians doubt it, as there is absolutely no evidence of the use of optical aids in texts. Most historians argue that the earliest the optical aids like hockeny claimed could have been used was around 1550, and only around the invention of the telescope in the early 17th century they're certain optical aids were used. 1550 is 120 years after Van Eyck finished the Ghent Altarpiece. So it's unlikely, a later study has shown that of all the Van Eyck paintings only a few tiny sections mathematically could be attributed to optical aids. There's a bit too much confirmation bias going on with Hockney's claims if you ask me. Even today we see people creating hyperrealistic artwork without optical aids, so it's not impossible that he just was that good.

Normally I favor originality and the conceiving artist’s vision, but I actually preferred the 16th century lamb face which has now been removed. We understand that Christ was never an actual lamb, but only symbolically a lamb, so there was no need to have a lamb with human eyes/gaze, and perfectly fine for the lamb to look like an actual lamb. Not my place to question a master like Van Eyck but the original lamb face is pretty ba-a-a-ad.

You talk about every panel in great detail, but when you reach the judges, you only talk about the theft. I want to know more about why he painted judges?!

good point! They are quite literally judges. The people who represent justice. They are not church officials, saints or people who fight to protect Christians or the church, but people who try to decide what is fair and what is not in disputes and criminal cases. They are mostly nobles. you can see some mink fur which is usually associated with royal robes. that is because kings or nobles or their appointees were the ones that would preside over court cases.

Stories Of Art thanks for clearing that out. A bit strange why he would paint them, other than to suck up to them?

Not really. They represent Christianity in their own way. All the groups converging on the altar represent Christianity in their own way. In this case they are judges who rule fairly, so with Christian values I guess.

@@storiesofart Is there a possibility that the judges refers to the Bible Book, literally called Book of Judges?

John the evangelist and the author of the apocalypse, also called John, are not the same person.
