Sabaton History

3 жыл бұрын

In the night of 17 May 1940, confusing reports were reaching French High Command. They spoke of what was thought impossible: The German Army had broken through the Maginot Line in the north. Scattered and panicked soldiers spoke of a "Division Fantôme" - a Ghost Division! It was Generalmajor Erwin Rommel's 7th Panzer Division that was wreaking havoc in the French rear. In an unauthorized push, Rommel had seized the opportunity to rush the French fortress garrisons by a surprise armor attack straight from the move. Now in open space and with the night sky illuminated by burning French tanks and trucks, it was crucial for the Ghost Division to exploit its tactical victory. Alone and cut off like an island in a sea of enemies, this was easier said than done.

I think a while ago you asked about ideas for future videos. Would a history video about Desert's "Lament For Soldier's Glory" be worth a consideration? With Indy, Jocke and Alexei as a special guest? The band and the song were mentioned in the Counterstrike episode, together with a few connections between Sabaton and Desert. There are many more. Cheers from Germany's Center Uplands!

I think Indy and Joakim have gone a little stir-crazy in quarantine or what we call it in Alaska cabin fever. Erwin Rommel is always one that I've read multiple books on. One book I was reading about him got me in trouble at work because this little girl while she's 19-20 now if she thought he was a Nazi and got me in trouble because I was reading a book about a Nazi. I talked about it in one of the other videos.

At the very least we'll be stuck here for a month, and we're going to take a LOT of casualties trying to assault it.... wait, were's Erwin? Erwin: Hey, sorry I'm late! Do you guys have any spare fuel or ammo? My tanks are running awfully low on both after last night. Hoth: What do you mean 'after last night'? Don't tell me you took the local ladies out sightseeing in your vehicles and taught them how to shoot to impress them... Erwin: Nah! Don't be silly, I just saw some frenchies in those bunkers and after we took 'em out we just kept on going. We ran into a French armored column too, but they were sleeping so we just went by quietly. I even tucked in their commander who was having trouble sleeping. He thought I was an Englishman! Hoth: ....... This isn't funny, Rommel! Hitler will have your head for this! You know he doesn't like people fooling around. Erwin: Awww, darn. The boys will be disappointed when I tell them that... Still, I'll go back and tell them to return the way we came. I still need fuel and ammo just in case, so can I take some? Hoth: You really did break through the Maginot Line, didn't you?... Erwin: Wait... THAT was the Maginot Line?

My Uncle Joeseph died fighting against Rommel in Tunisia, dying mere weeks before the African campaign came to an end. The letters he sent back are bizarre in a lot of ways, he talks about his respect for Rommel, and how wonderful it is serving under Monty and seeing them constantly trying to one-up each other. Called them both true soldiers and said it was an honour to be doing his duty around them.

To meeting him in battle i have 2 things, one from WW1 and one from WW2: During WW1 and the last Battle of the Isonzo, the germans sent a bit of material and a few units to support the Austrians. Guess who was among them... A certain Erwin Rommel commanding infantery. He and his men were tasked with taking a hill during the overall advance. (and please take into consideration that a "hill" in the alps would be considered a mountain in most other places) Which they managed (if i remember correct one could say in the usual manner by speed and surprise). And because they "had time left, and the opportunity was there" he decided to take the next one too. WW2: In north africa an american unit was receiving the rumor that Rommel was advancing towards them, and they feeling ill prepared "advanced to the back" as one could say. In a rather uncoordinated manner, causing vehicle accidents among themselves, mistaking the fires and noise from their comrades blowing up their own munitions to not leave it to the enemies, for Rommels tanks to already be there. Rommel and his men in the meantime were somewhere else... And yes, i too would think that you would not want someone like him as subordinate. But he was allegedly very much liked by his own subordinates.

Rommell realized what tanks could do and what 'modern warfare' had evolved into much faster than most others. I highly recommend Patton and Rommell:Men at War. A fascinating comparative biography. And thanks for the great show in Des Moines opening for Amon Amarth.

WOW!! (That's all I can say about this episode.) Well done!! PS: I must confess: It's almost comical what happened when Rommel encountered the French after he slammed through their lines. I honestly broke out laughing twice watching this: The signal flare pistols "attack" and the 40-truck column incident.

*Rommel: "We're gonna have to go right to LUDICROUS SPEED!"* All jokes aside, I'm a HUGE fan of Erwin Rommel. I'd love to see a song about him, specifically, and about how he gained the Allies' respect, along with the universal respect of his troops, his outstanding personal accomplishments, flexibility and creativity under fire, his near-prophetic foresight as to the collapse of Italy and efforts to put most of his troops in support of the Atlantic Wall, perhaps even his alleged desire to see Hitler brought to justice. I could totally see Sabaton lyrics like: "Rommel leading the force, invasion begun Desert Fox, leader of the Ghost Division" As for Sabaton History, however- I would also like to make a request, if possible- The Battle for Schloss Itter is my favorite battle of all time- I'd love to see a Sabaton History episode about it sometime soon! If you have other things planned, I understand. I'd just love to see Indy's take on it. I've read some really wild things about Itter and want to see if they really were true. Also, I'm so happy to see you well again, Indy!!! I wish I could celebrate your victory over the virus in person! Please, allow me to extend my congratulations and best wishes!

imagine being so fast that even when you break through one of the most armoured defensive lines in history the enemy starts calling you ghosts and your own leadership thinks your success was a trap by the enemy, crazy. The song very much mirrors this, the song is fast, aggressive and hard hitting, just like the 7th division were, The guitars have a raspy, grinding tone similar to how those French soldiers woke up to the sound of grinding metal and gun fire. The keys solo kind of has this confused feeling, not knowing where each phrase is going, again mirroring the fact that no one knew where this division was or where it was going. The way they wrote this song was masterful. Each strike of the crash symbol is like another tank round being fired. Absolutely one of my favourite sabaton songs and the story lends itself to sabaton and the music they write

I still remember my first full Sabaton concert. It was in Copenhagen in February. You, of course, started with Ghost Division and the crowd in the front started a mosh pit and I was right beside it. At first, it was annoying but I got used to it. Of course it wasn't the only time the pit started. I think there was a pit when you played Swedish Pagans or Primo Victoria. Speaking of Swedish Pagans, have Tommy on that episode

I hate these psychology tricks with causing fans to suffer by making them wait for what they want very much, but they always work. :D Thank you for finally delivering this episode, it was awesome as always. Rommel could have had extraordinary charisma if he did that trick with the French trucks. And the song, well...I have many favorite Sabaton songs but if someone asks which is my favorite, I usually say Ghost division first. It's always a part of my workout playlist and gives me goosebumps everytime, it's just so full of energy and so epic!
