OMG YES!! THIS should been the music they used for this sequence! I liked this music but they dropped the ball SO HARD on this one thing! I can only IMAGINE how my brain and heart would've exploded if this was in the actually movie! This intro is basically a combination of both intro songs use in the GITS and GITS 2. From what I heard, this was essentially how the movie was in test screenings except a bit quieter, but it was replaced before general release. I suspect either Production I.G. slapped DreamWorks with a Cease and Desist or (more likely) an exec at Paramount ordered it removed for "not being American enough". 😓

Ok here is the perspective of someone who didn't see the original until few minutes ago and just knew the 2017 adaption: When I was in the theatre I freaking loved the intro & the music, I think it is an amazing opening by itself BUT seeing the opening of the original few minutes ago kind of made me understand how people are feeling about it. The original score is a tremendous piece of art and conveys this strange religious larger than life feeling, its like witnessing human becoming god through their creation. Now seeing THIS gave me shivers. I can't understand why they didn't go with it. I still love the official 2017 version but this here is simply on another level. I also think that this movie really isn't the worst anime adaptation even though they could have made it something truely special if they dared to, but hollywood played it safe...
@f.g.5967

The hollywood movie was as a movie ok. The anime was a cornerstone in cyberpunk often mentioned as source of inspiration for dozens of books, comics or movies, the Matrix included. So yeah. I agree with you.

Had they done this, the movie would have gone from a 6/10 to a solid 8/10. It's a decent enough adaptation for what its worth, but the misuse of the classic GITS "chanting" theme was by far my biggest complaint. Why stick that in the end credits? Just... why?

Both sequences are incredible! Nothing beats the original but I found the film version to be quite inspiring and exceptional as well. The artists behind the live action film did such an incredible job. This film only suffered from writing. I wish they had given the writing to someone equally as passionate about this universe. Yet still, thoroughly enjoyed it.

@@jeremiahthornton7938 Personally i thought Scarlett was great casting and even Mamoru Oshi himself said so! i'm not too big on the original movie which i find overrated as it was stunning but hollow and lacks story or character development and humanity, i find films like Blade Runner 1 and 2, Robocop and Total Recall (1990) to be better films than the original anime movie and for anime movies i'll take Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghibli, Vampire Hunter D 1 and 2, Fist of the North Star, etc over GITS 1 and 2 and part 1 i thought was ok but not that great but part 2 sucked ass as it was boring, pretentious and hollow. I like the live-action film the best out of the GITS films so far as it has great characterizations, stunning visuals with practical effects and stunt work and i get to know more about the Major and who is this Puppet Master.

Personally, speaking on behalf of someone (I) who bought the Bluray disc and the wall poster at the cinema, I would say that from 1:47 to 1:51 there is a level of art that approaches the anime. The other parts on the entire sequence are not enough to compete. It would cost much more to keep the same quality/pace as Oshii's animation.

Or it could’ve been the studio. Everything looked like it was right out of the anime. Maybe I’m more lenient with the live action movie is because there isn’t a definitive ghost in the shell. The first movie was darker than the original manga, and all GITS has their own interpretation, what is the live action one but just another interpretation. Besides, it’s not like Japan does better when they make a live action anime movie. Look at attack on Titan

Something that I did not like in this adaptation was the music for making of a cyborg (like many of us). In the animated movie its music is mostly vocals with ancient (to some) and natural instruments. It offset the very mechanical and cyber-aesthetic of the visuals of a mock birthing scene. I'd describe it as a celebration of a birth. A tribe elated at a new and healthy child. This one though... it just felt too mechanical, as well as generic (it has that baseline of every epic/ trailer for a sci fi setting ever). There are some strings for a more natural sound, and even a few seconds of quiet chanting. It makes it all seem way too generi and artifical for my liking. In a way it's too modern and "western" when it was a Japanese story written and made by Japanese people.

Nice, thanks for doing this! I actually had to pause after the intro of the 2017 version and look for this. The new intro music was a totally anti-climatic experience for me. It's kinda fixed now. Probably had to do with expectations. But everything else in the intro felt very respectful of the old, so why replace that very iconic music with that boring low-key, low-pitch stuff. Anyway, thanks again!

if you want to do something good for yourself, then you look at the original and not this more than bad copy...

It was poor executed live action...so sad Why not stick on the original story? Instead, they (hollywood) generated typically lame made up story about Major...and made her so emotionally human...

Nah, in my opinion, i liked some of the changes, especially the change to make major more human.
