Ghost in the Shell montage sequence HD 1080p

This is the montage sequence from Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, "Ghost in the Shell". I decided to upload it because I haven't seen it on KZbin yet, much less in 1080p.
This montage is my favorite part of any movie I have ever seen up to this point in my life, and I feel like that's saying a lot for me. It is very powerful and awe-inspiring.
Fun fact: The file I had for the film was in .mkv, and I couldn't edit that easily, so I actually recorded this clip with Fraps in VLC player, and edited the 3 .avi files it produced. Notice the quality did not suffer. :)

It does well with what it is. It heavily relies on premise and plot, but is a bit cold with characters. I wish the stakes were hire with the ghost hacked humans who lose their identities and memory. It would really punch up the theme consciousness if you could see more of who these people were to create that sense of loss

These scenes show us an overcrowded city, full of inhabitants but is a sick place, the main feeling we can perceive is the loneliness, also accompanied by one of most wonderful soundtrack ever written for a movie. In my opinion the moment when loneliness is strong is the scene with the dog on the bridge, the dog is the only living being looking at us but at the same time the camera is moving away from it, giving us a strong sense of solitude and abandonment.

I on the other hand sees the city as a constructed organism (although the plane passing over made me think of reefs), the people and movements as cells or streams, the waterways as arteries. I don't get the feeling of loneliness when seeing this scene, what I was thinking of were parallells.

@@writershard5065 Kusanagi uses a standard chassis (i.e. her body is standard looking because as a special agent she is not supposed to stand out). In this scene she notices another person using the same chassis. In the whole montage you can see other elements that play into the theme of the body being just another commodity. Theres a sign at 2:52 promising "lifelike performance", propably advertising human dolls, in 1:52 you see fashion dummies in a shop display . At 3:20 you see fashion dummies without clothes and the difference is clear. With clothes they look likelike, without clothes they all look the same and definitely not lifelike. This is a clear parallel to Kusanagi and her chassis - the body is generic, you have to add something to distinguish it from all the other same looking chassis.

You can change all you want under the hood of a car but if you don't change the body panels it's still going to look just like every other car of the same make and model. That being said, I always took it as meaning that the Major's body is entirely off-the-shelf standard and that the only thing unique about her is her mind. Thus playing into the idea of a future where people are defined by what's in their brains, not by how they are "built".

Johnlindsey289 I get what you say, but they are nowhere near as complicated as GitS, at least from a philosophycal and social standpoint, not even Miyazaki's ones - which has a completely different approaches to stories than Oshii, which is why Oshii doesn't like Miyazaki not even GitS 2, but you can see how someother things Oshii made (like Patlabor 2 or Jin-Roh) are much more "deep" also this scene is a perfect example of how they are actually narrating something of the psychology of Motoko without even a fuckin' word, which is storytelling at his finest

well, skepticism towards live-action adaptations of mango and animu is based upon the massive representation of the failed latter. (with some great exceptions, such as Edge of Tomorrow - adaptation of the "All you need is kill" manga) I agree though, that new GITS movie seems steady in the spirit of the original, now it's all up to the execution. I'm afraid there will be a lack of thick political fiction layer in the plot, or could be reduced to mere premise. I liked how the original acheived fragile balance between political fiction, technical and existential aspects, dillemas and emerging philosophies from the near future (which I think is the definition of the true cyberpunk genre). Live action seems to be more on the philosopical, existential side, but we'll see. Also, the atmosphere to which Retromind refers is one-of-its-kind Mamoru Oshii's vision of the GITS. Anime universe also comprises of 2 seasons of SAC series, few films and Arise OVA prequels, which are ringing the different notes, and deepening the lore significantly as compared to the 1995 film. And I think this is important beacuse to me, the GITS world is as important as the characters populating it. I hope the film will be a success and will get a chance to get a continuation and unfold in a longer, but suitable format of for example 10 1-hour episodes, and that the GITS will finally get the wide recognition and critical acclaim it deserves.

For me, Ghost in the Shell 95 is the greatest piece of anime to ever be created. There are others in the same realm in terms of art style but this is the one for me. The art, the score, the story, and the complex questions and views of what consciousness even means just edge this one to the top for me. Truly a masterpiece of art. Thank you for uploading this. I watched this gem of an anime back in 2004, but I didn't appreciate the slow atmospheric sequences like this. I was too hyped up on action sequences since I was 20 years old at the time. This one scene still stuck with me over the years, especially the parts where it's raining. Since I was in the Navy, and deployed out into the Asian and Persian Gulf theaters, I was able to visit Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore first hand. Sasebo, Japan wasn't like this, but some older apartment buildings in Hong Kong did match New Port City's aesthetic and architecture, while Singapore had this building that was like a technology mall, selling between cheap and somewhat high-end products at the time. I also can remember just how hot and humid places like that can be. Seeing this scene again helps me remember the sights, the feels, and even the smells of those far-off places.

Absolutely stunning composition. I come back to this sequence in times of confusion, sadness, perplexation. I can't help but see the similarities in the landscape of New Port City and Vancouver. A class system split so deeply that it almost feels other worldly at times. With massive structures there to make you feel like you're part of something so much bigger, but also so insignificant. Blade Runner is the closest movie to this anime in terms of atmosphere and place.
