Video games can be a lot more beautiful than real life because video games have a consistent art direction. RDR2 is as beautiful as it is because it mimics painting, not real life, and that itself creates already a more visually appealing setting than the often dreary or boring real life.

The game is definitely an accurate depiction of what Tsushima the island would have looked in the 16th century. Mapping is quite different but the terrain and mountains is pretty much what you would come to contact with

I could see this as a tourist thing and I don't know if that's what the locals want especially after Japan got scolded for illegal whaling. In the game I found a sliced up dead whale at the north. Plus it would be better if they preserve the historical sites not alter it unless they have to like what they did with the castle after the earthquake.

Interesting thing I found, in game of you look west or east atop a mountain you can see mountains in the distance, those being from Korea and mainland Japan. Apparently IRL you can see Korea from Tsushima atop a mountain on a clear day too.

Also note what the director of the game said, they took a lot of inland Japan geography for the game Bc in real life it’s just a lot of forest. Tsushima never had flower fields or a shit ton of springs laying all over.
