Absolutely outstanding drone video footage shot of a sad & yet, tragic ending of an abandoned ship. Most of all, what brought on the crew to abandon the vessel, is another sad story in and of itself.

Seeing the huge, catastrophic damage to the hull and deck caused by the waves pounding into the ship is really quite fascinating! In time, that wreck will be reduced to rusted, twisted and torn scraps of metal, getting progressively smaller with each passing year! There won't be a millimeter of that wreck that the seawater hasn't forced its way in! Graphic illustration of the power of the sea and its capability to destroy vessels! Nothing ever launched could possibly survive that continuous pounding! Great footage, thank you for sharing.

probably cheaper to let nature consume the wreck then to salvage it

No wonder it's being smashed to bits with the size of the waves there. I'd only ever seen footage of the ship in calm seas, but this shows why the ship has broken up so much. Excellent video.

The waves and the shore are without mercy...Ships of steel are still "very fragile", I was on a WW2 Landing Ship, Tank (LST) in a typhoon in '66, we made it through with cracks across the main deck amidships and water coming through into the berthing compartment, and a plate fatigued off the bottom, I was to young at the time to comprehend the danger, it was exciting and we were like kids enjoying reckless driving in a car...

I have to say, I'm impressed at the enterprise of the graffiti artist who got aboard to write his name on the superstructure (visible at c. 43 seconds) -presumably in somewhat nicer conditions than these! An appropriate canvas as well compared to a lot of graffiti, I mean, I don't think any reasonable person would consider 'tagging' the 'Alta' vandalism. Amazing how long she was floating abandoned on the Atlantic, jeapourdising shipping... I wonder how many hulks like this are adrift (and untracked) on the World's oceans..? Literally thrilling to watch this David v. Goliath struggle! Even on a dinky little phone-screen I'm almost lost for words, it's almost visceral!) Those waves are - quite literally- 'awesome', a word that has been almost ruined by inappropriate over-use ("Her dress was just 'Awe - Somm..!'") Haven't lived there in nearly 30 years but Cork is my hometown. Footage like this drives it home just WHAT a refuge - and Asset- her harbour is. Mind you, if the swell is running from the South as I suspect, I'd imagine it's still a bit queasy the other side of Roche's Point!

It does make me wonder why they are also so quick to rescue crews in terrible conditions. With a steel ship like this it is often better to stay onboard until the weather calms down. She has survived for over a year.

Sadly, because it was abandoned on the other side of the Atlantic, no one will take responsibility so it’s now washed up on the Irish coast.
