I only met him because my friend was a musician that passed away and after singing at his funeral, his father asked to work with me. I went downtown to the studio, which was upstairs within a restaurant, recorded the vocals- in addition to female vocals that were on the track that the producer "didn't want to use". They were given my number, email address, and other contact information, but no demo was ever sent to me. I didn't want the song for anything other than my portfolio since I was only a freshman at Detroit School of Arts, but I learned very quickly the importance of getting things in writing as well as loopholes in contracts. Fast forward and I have a professional local band, Eminent Vibrations (and apparently youtube videos that haven't been uploading so I stick to facebook live), and my heart goes out to young, exploited musicians on both sides. Millivanilli took the fall for something that essentially their producer did. The same thing "could" be happening here with J-Lo, but she seems less apologetic about it than they did. Not to mention, while not as soulful as the singer's voices they were known for, with more training, they could've come into their own. You're absolutely correct that many of these vocalists were compensated, but not all were.
