Clearly this was not the season to visit the pine barrens. It's very beautiful and amazingly so untouched. Thanks for taking me along again

Cliff, It looks so different there than even a year ago, it looks like the State is fixing up the area arounds the ruins caused by off road vehicles. I was there when a couple of the stone buildings still existed and went into the cellar of one, away from the heat and insects. A Spanish family was "occupying" the other one.. I think I was there in 1970, but I had been there in the sixties along with visits to the Carranza Memorial. Carranza was a fine young pilot with a tragic end, but it's good to know he isn't forgotten. The Memorial has been deteriorating for a long time, but I hope someone is making a effort to preserve it. Please let me know how it is now since it's a long trip from Ferndale,WA to Tabernacle,NJ:) Cheers, Rik Spector

I was there yesterday. The state did control burn of grass at site and looks like they tried to excavate a building cellar hole. The one up against the road right up against the bog. It looks to have been an adorable remote village. A shame it was removed. The tiny school house is restored and moved several miles away. I hope they preserve, better yet, re-build this adorable ghost village.

My grandfather belonged to the Mt.Holly ambulance squad back then and they were among the responders. He took a glass vent window from the site as a souvenir. It was small and he forgot about It till about 1990 and when he unwrapped it it disintegrated in front of us.

Think maybe you should spray in your hat too. That should help keep flies from your face. Really enjoyed that thanks. Beautiful area. Please stay safe and take care

Cliff try Dryer Sheets, I tuck one my hat and rub on my clothes , it helps. I read a story in Read's Digest about a man that live there in the barrens. As a young boy his friend and he were taught by his friend's Grandfather, a Native American , how to track animals and people. Over the years he was credited many times for finding lost children, Hunters, and asisted Law Enforcement finding criminals and escaped prisoners.

That would be Tom Brown. He wrote a bunch of books. There are a lot of questions about whether he really did all he claimed.

A plus of living in the desert is that I don't have the bugs like that where I live. Of course, I don't have the greenery that you do that I miss.

I live south of the Mullica River, in Atlantic County. I know Friendship very well. I used to know someone who lived in Friendship as a young child, till the family moved away. I think that was in the late 60s or very early 70. She has a few old photos taken there when she was a child. She lives out of state now though. The big cellar hole/foundation with the guardrail in front of it is from the cranberry packing house. One of the cellar holes closer to the intersection was the general store. Friendship, unfortunately, has been heavily vandalized in the last 15-20 years. Further away from Naomi on the Friendship-Speedwell Road (still in that field) there were a couple more foundations. Also there are many more bogs hidden in the woods around there. Glad to see the Wandering Woodsman finally made it to the Pine Barrens!

I'm glad you're going to the Carranza Memorial! We went there a few months ago. I've spoken to a few Pineys and they said they do a ceremony around the 13th of July. The Carranza family attends as well!! During the ceremony they go out into the woods with a stetcher and reenact recovering Carranza. If you haven't watched it yet there is a documentary on him, "The Flight of Emilio Carranza".

The biggest cellar hole is the packing house . Drive out to Chatsworth and you'll see Alot of active cranberry bogs . I use to live in Tuckerton NJ before moving to Pa. Another neat spot is Harrisville paper mill on route 563

There was a cranberry scare in 1959- scientists found carcinogens in the berries. That may have led to the ghost town.

Yeah those God-Awful biting flies just RUIN the 'great outdoors'. When I see them swarming the mirrors of my car I oftentimes end up not even getting out of the car. AWFUL! I'm glad the bug spray helps. I'm looking to purchase one of those bee-keeper type hats with the netting to at least cover my head / face / neck. Seems like little bugs do kamikaze-style hits to my ears, nose / mouth, and eyes when I take a walk out in the woods. I guess they sense where moisture is emanating from. If I can keep 'em out of my face, and the buzzing away from my ears I could at least stay sane, then one could probably wear long sleeve shirt and gloves to keep them off of hands, you'd sweat more but perhaps keep most of the bugs from biting.

Did you call them Bayou Flies? their called locally either deer flies or pine flies. We have no bayous here justa lot of criks ditches and brANCHES, At 8'42 you were in the cellar hole of the last lady to live in friendship with her son.She left in 72.I" wasn't going up that way back then I was a kid but an older friend of mine met her.I do remember the electric line still; running into town. Also the large cellar at the ten minute mark was supposedly the post office. You did miss one cellar hole, the school which was near the road further east toward Speedwell but still in the field about ha;lf way down. The Bridge spans Shane Branch of Tulpehocken Crik. You also missed the large granite DeMarco Monument.

Yuck humidity and bugs not my favorite combo. Ghost towns cool. We go to Asseteque island everytime we go to MD. Beaches. One hot humid yucky day we decide to go to the beach to see the horses. Omg I swear I heard the bugs yell fresh meat when we got out of the car. Charge. It was awful. Horse flies, mosquitoes you name it. Yet people were camping on the other side of the dunes. Now I know why my mom took cans of raid yard spray camping.
