Ghost Train: Lost Railways of Britain

An animated look at the lost Wells & Fakenham Railway railway in Norfolk! The line closed to passenger traffic in 1964 and to goods traffic in the 1980s. Part of the line reopened as the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway on 6 April 1982.
Feel free to subscribe and check out other lost lines!

Super video!! It was a delight as I've walked along that old route so many times (getting rather difficult and overgrown now). I wonder about that part of the line that goes from Wells-on-Sea over to Burnham Market. Another superb bit of railway that shut in 1953 and is now almost wholly out of bounds.

Most Excellent - I love the subtle upgrades (now much easier to see the route develop on the middle screen). a Question ? - the Clock. What is the thinking ? Start time, speed of motion and how it links to the journey ? Also, the music is great ! - on some of them it is positively perfect ! Bravo - such a brilliant channel - would love to see how you do this....

Thanks! I synchronise the clock to the main maps using Bradshaw timetables for each journey to give an idea as to the journey times etc. Feel free to subscribe I have many more routes planned!

I recall my first journey on that line; Dereham to Wells to go cockling..... we lived at Northall Green ... that was Coronation Year... the line ran along the foot of our garden. Later I would travel to Wells from school to stay with my grandmother at Wells during half terms. For some reason I recall another abandoned line into Wells, would that be the one from Heacham that went through Burnham Market?

Thank you so much for posting this. This was a branch I knew very well having travelled on it many times. Just one gripe: What happened to Wighton Station? No mention of it. The building is still there and the Wells and Walsingham Railway goes right past the old platform.

Hi John I may have missed Wighton as it was opened in 1924 - the early map preceded that station by several decades so that may explain the omission I hope this explains its absence.

Walsingham has a holy shrine and the station is an Orthodox church😊

Would you be able to make similar videos of the following lines, all of which are in South West Scotland?: * Dumfries - Moniaive (built in 1905 as the Cairn Valley Light Railway (CVLR), but closed by BR in 1948). * Castle Douglas - Kirkcudbright (the main branch line from the Dumfries - Stranraer "Port Road" line, closed by BR as a Beeching cut in 1965). * Dumfries - Stranraer (the fabled, and spectacular "Port Road," running for 70 - 80 miles right across SW Scotland with a series of large viaducts. Closed by BR as another Beeching cut in 1965). * Newton Stewart - Whithorn, with a short branch from Millisle Junction - Garlieston (the other major branch line from the "Port Road," a scenically beautiful line running to the Southernmost station in Scotland. Closed by BR in 1964). * Stranraer - Portpatrick (the Westernmost part of the "Port Road," but became of lesser importance after Stranraer became a more suitable ferry port for Northern Ireland. Closed by BR in 1954). I can easily supply you with many photographs showing the remains of these lines as they are now. Old photos of the stations can be found in galleries here: www.theportroad.co.uk/

I do intend to shift to lost Scottish lines. Do you have any images of stations of those lines while they were in operation or consent to my use of them in future videos? I only use images that are given permission via cc commons or in the public domain to be safe.
