New for 2020 - Hand Typed & Timed Subtitles. I worked hard to improve the audio, it's the best it can be & sounds fine if you can watch on a good TV. Turn the new subtitles on in any event, so that you won't miss a word ;-).
Wonderfully shot around the UK in 1989 and shown on BBC2 as part of their long running & respected '40 Minutes' series. My favourite section is the grand old man with the dragon motif in his ceiling, the music & story are very touching, it's often brought a tear to my eye - Here is the exact piece of music as used in that part of the documentary, it starts at around 38 minutes - • Brahms: "Ein deutsches... .
Most believable story is the man talking about his aunts who were sisters. Watch out for the hilarious little boy talking about his sister, cute doesn't cover it; as to the story of his grandma, I'm not sure about this one, the daughter could have over heard what her grandma was wearing, and the rest is her imagination. I'm not mad about the last part at the airfield, but overall this is an entertaining & well made programme, in vintage BBC style.
Enjoy!

I don't think people take this kind of thing very seriously these days - it's more a form of entertainment now than anything people genuinely believe in. Society really has changed. People were much more superstitious and credulous back then.

Thank you so much for preserving and sharing this! It's fantastic. I love the attitude of the British when it comes to the supernatural. It's so clear headed and normal. No one is screaming about "demons" and making silly assumptions. They just accept that ghosts are people too, and go about their business! And having been to the UK five times in the last six years I can confirm: this entire country is FULL of spirits. Going out at night time - in the middle of town - is an event. Never felt anything like it in my life, and I love it! 🇬🇧💘

“... And having been to the UK five times in the last six years I can confirm: this entire country is FULL of spirits.” In the history of the UK no one, to my knowledge has even clearly defined what constitutes a ghost. There is no agreed taxonomy for a ghost. No one in the UK has ever presented evidence that comes close in quality to the evidence we have for say the elusive badger. Britain is full of badgers. That’s indisputable. But full of spirits? Really? It’s full of ghost stories. What is your definition of a spirit? How are these spirits manifesting themselves, how doe we know they are what you say they are?

I definitely heard a ghost train driving in the car through a tunnel on a road which I later learnt used to be a railway tunnel. As myself and a friend entered the tunnel we both heard a train whistle and the faint chug of a train. Later we googled the area and found out the road used to be a railway track. The trains stopped running in 1920

I really enjoyed this, especially the final story of the airfield tower haunting. It was fascinating and very humbling watching the quietly unassuming clairsentient's experiences, and how he was able to help the spirit of the aircraftsman pass over, calmly and without a fuss. I personally feel this is a clear sign of an individual with a true psychic gift; as some of the other viewers have pointed out, there were absolutely no gimmicks used in the footage, just the man's skills at work. The whole watching experience was a refreshing contrast to many programmes of today, which rely on the ghost-hunting 'showsmanship' of the presenters with their gadgets, rather than any true ability to communicate with spirits. Thank you, Chillmax!

I always remembered the RAF control tower ghost item, which I first saw around 25 years ago and I always said that if it hadn't been for the gifted Eddie Burke, the spirit of that poor airman would still be earthbound to this day. However, if Eddie hadn't called in the people from the spirit world to come and take the airman into the light, it seems they wouldn't have helped the airman, What kind of an incompetant system is that? They should have helped the airman anyway years earlier.

Great programme without all the screaming and drama - I sort of believe that a ghost will never never be recorded on camera as they can only been seen/heard by those who possess a sensitivity that others don't - Bit like someone being partially deaf against someone who has perfect hearing, the person with the perfect hearing may say 'Did you hear that?' and the partially deaf person may say 'Hear what?' - The sound happened but can only be heard by the person with better hearing. Elephants as an example can communicate with each other over long distances using infrasound, if scientists can work that out surely they can prove humans can see/hear things that others humans can't ?

I don't believe in Ghosts and I come from a family who very much do, I have a mother who experienced visions of a murder that happened in South Wales in the 80's that was accurate to the victims last movements (according to my mother and father, I was too young to remember this incident) and my great aunt was the leader of a spiritualist church but after childhood I can only really believe my eyes and ears and nothing has ever happened to me that I can't explain scientifically. I do however have a soft spot for programmes like this and I'm sure after all these years you're sick of these comments but thanks so much for uploading. Without uploaders like you superb programmes like this would be lost forever

I started to make subtitles from scratch for this, and completed them with lots of tweeks and timing corrections. Its a pity the BBC doesn't remaster and release this, along with other paranormal stuff on a DVD.

Amazing, who were you doing that for? Would it be possible for you to add them to my video? Unlikely in afraid, the BBC don't care about things like that, it would be far too nice to their 'customer'.

Aww hi chillmax. I'm not actually new to your channel because I was subscribed to you under my old channel (Toops144) but I deleted it sadly. Also I was told on the aforementioned video (of which you may find the link in my previous comment), that Eddie had sadly passed away - I believe around 2005 though there's nothing else I can find to verify that information. Anyway once again I'm so glad you uploaded this and hope you're well too :)

Hi again then ;-) Oh dear, when I said nice to know he's still going, I did think it could be an old recording, and so it seems to have turned out! So it looks like it's Eddie's turn to make contact from the other side now. I nearly left the previous version of this video up, as it had so many comments, but I didn't want anyone to watch that over this much higher quality version, so you're previous comments have been lost in the ether, but it was worth it ;-) Keep up the body building!

I've now looked this up, and I think you're just referring to the main theme, which is indeed what you say. I'm talking about the operatic piece, which plays behind the section where the priest visits the old chap & a cemetery; unless this is also from the Go-Between, in which case apologies ;-)

You may be finding it especially difficult, as most of the people in the show have regional UK accents, most from the north of England, not the expected London/ Southern accent & some of them are very strong. Unfortunately I recorded this in 'Long Play' which lowers audio quality, I don't think I knew that at the time & of course age isn't very kind to VHS tapes. I worked quite hard to make it look & sound it's best, so at least know that, I know you've seen it now, but if you like, try watching again with headphones, it helps ;-).

That old iron crucifix was creepy as all hell, but the 'Dominic' ghost tale sounded like bullshit comedy. Great documentary, very much of its time and very nostalgic (broadcast 2 March 1989).

Anyone remember Q.E.D? They did a documentary on NDE's . One of the interviewees was recorded as saying "It felt like I was going down a long dark tunnel"..... This clip was sampled on a well known dance track called 'Valley Of The Shadows' by Origin Unknown. (Some of you may know it). Well as it turns out, the lady in question who's voice was sampled was a client of an ex colleague of mine. ! I cannot find video footage of the documentary anywhere. Nor can I remember her name.! Very frustrating. If anyone can get hold of it, I would love to watch it.
