I visited this site only yesterday . . . It's one of my all-time fave railways sites in Australia! The rails are not the originals, having been laid by locals and the nearby colliery to remind visitors that it was once a busy mainline scene. However, I must say the area has fallen into further disrepair since this footage was shot. Following recent heavy rains, it's quite buggy - and several tres have fallen into the cutting just near the tunnel mouth . . nice job on the vide!

Hi Mark, The line was abandon because the gradient slopes further on in the longest tunnel were too steep for the trains to go through quickly, thus choking passengers with their fumes despite closing windows. So a new line a few hundred metres away was cut and the lines now follow that route.

A friend of the mother of my grand-grand mothers sister used to work in the proximity of this place, one dark autumn in the year of 1834, he entered this tunnel, never to be seen again. To this day locals swear that on thundernights, his screams can still be heard!

There's one sort of like this in John Forrest National Park in Perth, Wetern Australia. It's about 400m long, built in 1895. You can see the outline of where the line bypassed it post WWII. When the Indian Pacific line became standard gauge, it made whe whole thing redundant, and was pulled up in the 60s. Today, it's a nice flat walking track, although would have loved to see it as a rail line

The scariest tunnel I have seen here you YT was the Aberdare/Merthyr tunnel. The fellow that went through it mentioned that it was a 1.4 mile long tunnel that took him 45 mins to walk through. He edited/sped up the clip to take up only 15mins. It was one of those old brick tunnels and it had these 'rooms' in it. He certainly was one brave soul to give it a go alone with that one.

That Tunnel was hidden with overgrown with bush the last time I was there back in the 1980's. Boggy too. Nice to see it's been cleared and track relayed. The tunnel was supposed to have been blocked off inside and converted to a water resevoir for the local coal mine. Buggered if I know how that works. There's another tunnel not far from that one just north of Helensburg Station. Thats a shorter one and was locked up at both ends. Looked like it was used for storage or a workshop or something.

It was the South Coast Railway Line of New South Wales, Australia. At the time the tunnels ( and there were a few in the area) turned out to be too long and difficult because of the chocking fumes for passengers from the steam engines, so they ended up building a new route close by.

To a film maker, it's a great set to be used in a film for where ever your imagination takes you. This tunnel and several others were closed down nearly 100 years ago because the trains of the time couldn't cope with them. People were getting overcome by fumes, heat, smoke etc especially through the longest tunnel of nearly 2 kilometres that was next on the line and as shown in Ghost Tunnel 2 - the Deadline which a group of us walked through on Friday 13th for a doco film. Keep watching!
@AlanBondFilms
@AlanBondFilms 14 жыл бұрын
The tunnel closed in 1920. Since this tunnel and the other from Otford through to Stanwell Park were very long tunnels, and the trains coughed out smoke etc, travellers would be apparently affected by the fumes, even though there were air vents up to the surface from the tunnels.

We visited that tunnel, the other night, with about 20 cubs, joeys, and parents. Always a great place to visit. Always blows people away. What saddens me though, is how run down the place is becoming, I guess through lack of management. It truly is a wonderful asset, to the local community of Helensburg. I feel this area will soon be lost to all, if bobody steps up. My advice.. Get there soon, because it is only a matter of time, when someone will injure themselves on this site, or there is a tunnel collapse etc. At this point, you can bet, either State Rail, or the local council, will cordon off the area..
@AlanBondFilms
@AlanBondFilms 10 жыл бұрын
Actually it is listed as a site to be visited by State Rail. The Helensburgh Historical Society apparently look after the site but I don't think they want too many people to know about it because they fear vandalism, etc..... it is a great local asset but sadly not promoted (except maybe for my videos!!!) for the adventurous (especially the glow worms). I have just completed a new film there, BATMAN Vs THE GHOST TUNNEL, now on KZbin.... especially for kids (and BIG kids) so hope you catch up to that one..

@MilwaukeeSDman I think it was in the early 1920's. The trouble was that it was an area of hostile terrain. There were a few tunnels in the area and all became abandon. The old locomotives started taking too long to get through the tunnels and people were chocking on the fumes. A new south coast rail line was cut through via a different direction and this is the one used today.
@lockudlad

It would make a brilliant setting for a spooky story but I think one has alrready been made. It was called 'The Signalman' and starred an English actor called Denholm Elliott. The main character (Denholm Elliott) keeps seeing a strange figure beckoning him into the railway tunnel close to the signalbox that he operates. Quite spooky as I remember it. The figure has no face and eventually lures him to his death when he goes into the tunnel and is hit by a train.

Yep, an Australian tunnel, one of about 6 that ran through a very rough terrain, so they had to basically rebuild a different way, but not too far from the tunnel. The houses and Helensburgh station you see in the photos were how it looked but only part of the platform remains and the houses have been replaced with more up to date. The cutting have always been there but nature and development have altered the area a lot. I have a few other films which show more of how the tunnel is these days.

It's being used by the mine down the other end as I mention in a recent comment. The line was discontinued because in the old days the trains fumes from the funnels would choke people. A new route was found nearby.

You watched Picnic at Hanging Rock too many times! But seriously, in some of the very long tunnels - Woy Woy being one - passengers used to be affected by the poisonous gases from the coal burners. Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbons being some. My wife's Grandfather used to be a driver on the south coast line and they used to cover their heads with a dampened wheat bag while in Otford and probably this very tunnel. The line was rerouted in 1890's.

I don't know about Australian ghost trains emerging in the UK, but when it comes to haunted tunnels there's plenty of scope for spooky happenings on the London Underground network. Indeed, it is said that there have been many haunting reports from staff manning the London Underground as well as from passengers.

That's what they did in those days plus the fact that there are valleys and gullies and dropping down to a coast line to the flat lands further down the coast. This line had and even now, had to eventually drop a good 1,000 feet to get to Wollongong and the Illawarra.
