Enid didn't fit in this place.Not with her family, not with her best friend, not with Seymour. Everything around her was changing, so the one thing she took comfort in was that the old man would always be there sitting at his bench, until even that changed. Like her, he was a ghost. So, she went to see where ghosts go, and left the place she never belonged in. I miss my friends and my old life but I had to leave it when it fell apart too. I guess thats why this movie struck me so much when i first saw it in college.

And people wonder why vast numbers of humans are so enamored with alcohol consumption and/or other mind-altering substances?! Whatever it takes to get us through this cold, enormous struggle of daily existence, especially for those of us who don't quite fit in this world. Thank goodness for music, for art, for dancing, for films, for books, and for nature to help make the struggle a little bit easier.

I don't think they committed suicide. The old man could've killed himself a long time ago since he was always there "waiting for the bus", so why wait all that time? That old man was treated as a "ghost" by society, he was there but people didn't see him... you know what I mean? By the end of the movie Enid felt like a "ghost" because she saw that the two closest people to her were slowly becoming distant from her, and she felt lonely. That's why the movie is called Ghost World, because it's the world where people who have been rejected by society, people who are outsiders, outcasts, who does not fit in, etc, live in.

Finally someone gets it lol I do think that Melissa is right that it can be left to interpretation but I feel like ultimately it was about what you said, the feeling of alienation and being left behind by those who you used to be close with. To people who find it hard to fit into society because they're just too different from the norm and can't find others like themselves, you really do end up feeling like a ghost. People may think that the character Enid was a bit dramatic towards the end but that's not the case at all and to anyone who ever felt isolated and lonely, they probably understood how Enid was feeling towards the end of the movie, I know I did lol.

This is a movie that rewards multiple viewings. Enid's inability to part with objects at the yard-sale is reminiscent of Seymour and his housemate. Much as Rebecca's "Call me" during this scene is a callback to the scenes with Melora. It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Enid and Rebecca are no longer close. This is further exemplified by Rebecca's "mature" dress sense. She has changed, whereas Enid has remained the same. Enid takes the bus to a place unknown. While we don't know where this journey of self-discovery will lead to, I feel that her time with Seymour will ultimately make her cautious of ending up in a similar position. I don't think she is as hopeless a case as some people here make her out to be.

In the movie ‘the Last Black Man In San Francisco’ the main character, Jimmie, boards a city bus and encounters Thora Birch with colored hair and a leather jacket, and they have a brief conversation. The filmmakers said that they imagined that It was the bus Enid got on at the end of Ghost World and that she had ended up in SF. Which is also interesting, since the girls from Ghost World were based on two women from SF who worked in a comic book store on Haight Street.

I went through a place in my life around when this movie came out. I was in college and felt directionless, dropped out and got an office job. Remember being alone, didn’t really have any friends and would stay at work til midnight and sometimes wonder around downtown, feeling alone and invisible. Randomly went by myself to an indie theater that was showing this when it came out. Connected with me at the time, the alienation and the feeling I was snuck in place while those I used to know as friends changed and moved on. I did manage to figure it out and get it together, kinda like Enid there at the end, by packaging up and moving to a new place to start fresh.

I like the ambiguity and uncertainty of the bus stop ending for both the old man and Enid. I choose NOT to solve the puzzle and leave it open ended. I believe it was left purposefully ambiguous - we make them more or less significant in our viewing of the film depending upon how we feel and interpret other scenes and character interactions. Also, I wanted to call out the clip where Enid leaves the hospital and sits down with Rebecca. Prior to this interaction, the characters had obviously fallen out and nothing in the film indicated that had changed prior to this scene. Yet Rebecca waits for her to emerge - clearly they have reconciled, and, what's more, Rebecca seems to have abandoned her hatred for Seymour (no cutting remarks made about him, no anger at Enid for going to see him and making her wait, etc. etc.). Is this the ending of their relationship or a rebirth? We are left to decide for ourselves. Very clever.

I've watched this movie so many times since I was 12 (almost 20 years ago, Jesus...) and every time as I get older I see it a bit differently. Watching the scene now I have a completely different interpretation than before. Enid was someone who thought the world was static but was alarmed to find that people have to change in order to grow. The old man at the bus stop was one of the quirky things she loved which she thought would always be the same. Then to her shock she realized that even he isn't permanent and eventually moves on, in his case probably in death. The bus that never comes did eventually come. She realized that her bus will come too and she has to get on it to move on. When I was an Enid I felt like an outsider so I didn't think my bus would come and change things, but eventually I found myself on a bus line I didn't know existed. I still don't know where it's going but I'm very far from where I started.

Suicide or no? I have always thought yes. Picking up on small details is important to this interpretation. Notice that the bench says "Life Not In Service." Also the bus is outdated, not a normal bus, and she is the only person on it. Enid is in all red representing mania/impulsivity. Enid is at a point where she has disappointed everyone in her life and feels completely alone. She stopped by to make final amends with her friend and Seymour. She has no money to start a new life. Then she gets on this bus into the dark night, going over a bridge, almost symbolic of crossing the River Styx. Watching this after watching Zwigoff's movie Crumb tells me he is interested in suicidality. Of course it's open for interpretation. But I think suicide is most likely considering all this. Great film, one of my favorites.
@carolyngair7051
@carolyngair7051 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure it IS suicide. In the original script Enid had a line confessing a childhood dream of just disappearing one day without telling anyone. I think she feels like a ghost in her own life. She can’t seem to grow-up or change and those around her are moving on, moving up, or moving into other relationships. Becky is with Josh. Her dad is with Maxine. There’s no one for her anymore. So she decides to disappear on that magical bus that will take her away. Just like Norman did. Alternate reality? Who knows. But it doesn’t seem like suicide.

It is human nature to rather choose a death than perpetual suffering, BUT - Meaning of Life, among other things, is to KNOW what death is, and not to "try" it, but to find a solution, if there is some - and almost always, there is, even that is not immediately noticeable ...

@@carolyngair7051 You can interpret it differently if you want, but don't deny it seeming like suicide... If they wanted this to be a metaphor for something other than death, the old man in the suit would make no sense... The movie's script does not matter, but the movie writers did not write the story. Sure your interpretations could be correct, but acting like this is not possibly a suicide, says a lot about how uncomfortable people are with accepting the realities of teenage/young adult suicide...

Red for women generally represents adulthood and coming of age. White represents purity, red (the sign of womanhood) can imply a corruption of said purity. Like the Scarlet letter for example. Red can also mean courage. Or violence. The color red symbolizes a great many things. I’d say the color choice is open ended in the movie. Does she now understand what it means to be an adult and, corrupted, chooses to leave the world. Or does her newfound understanding of adulthood mean that she has become empowered to make a change? Either interpretation has validity

This is about inertia vs momentum: having direction in life. Becky had direction and aspirations. Enid didnt. She consoled herself with the old man, who seemed the most inert, directionless person she knew. Then the bus came...and she was shocked to learn that even the person who seemed to be doing "nothing" was actually planning for a future -- a something. Enid doesn't know what "something" the man was pursuing...but she also realized SHE wanted to pursue something. Otherwise one is left behind (as she was by Becky and the old man). Enid's problem was she couldn't identify a "something" worth pursuing. When she decided to wait for the bus, she had decided that even an unknown "something" was better than "nothing;" if only because it held out a small prospect for hope and a future. Seymour, going back to his old life (and mom), is the one who chooses inertia. Enid thought that the world was the ghost, but realized that she herself was. She could join Seymour and haunt the same old places forever (as he will surely do)...but she made a different choice.

i always interpreted the closing scene of the man getting the bus and then enid following the next day to be her as seeing a way out of her suffering, but not by suicide. moving away isnt giving up on life itself, its giving up on the life she has currently. if she cant grow with the people around her, shes stuck elsewhere, she's in the world around her and yet she's not in it whatsoever - a ghost. to enable growth, it must start elsewhere, somewhere she is allowed to exist, where she is able to live in a world and not in front of or behind others - her own world, alone. this man at the bus stop triggered her to come to terms with her loneliness, and realise her alternate option to what she had already tried (her attempt to fit into the world around her). to summarise, she leaves her life to start a new one, and becomes dead to that world, by choice, rather than staying a ghost. she killed her ghost rather than herself i think and simply lived in her world now, population: 1, and so is she really alone if theres nobody in her world to isolate her? this is all just my interpretation so of course disagree i mean its probably stupid as fuck anyway

Then why have it be a lonely old man, who is likely near death and waiting to join his wife? And why have it be a bus stop that is no longer in service? She was a depressed and alienated kid, who had ruined her future prospects... I am sorry, but you people seem so eager to ignore what is right in front of you. @@dijonjohn1011 the author of the novel literally confirmed that it was not his intention for it to signify suicide?? the out of service bus stop has a greater meaning than her killing herself lol. an out of service stop generally means that the busses will pass the stop or take a different route as a whole. either way, the stop being out of order and the man always waiting there signifies enids feelings of being a ghost in the world around her that simply functions. the bus being out of service isn't a metaphor for suicide, it's an announcement of where enid is in her life. when the man is waiting with no bus to come, enid is still a ghost, and still not ready to deal with that, but when the bus finally arrives for the man, it is confirmation that enid has reached a conclusion of how to not stay a ghost and actually live. the out of service stop becoming in service literally means that the bus stop is now ready for the bus that arrives is ready for it's journey and is prepared to reach the destination, and is to be applied to enid. also since the bus was once in service, you can assume that enid also probably was too, and it all changed for her when she saw everyone "grow up" without her. i just had to retype my comment because i accidentally backspaced it and am running on no sleep right now but i hope this makes sense. i just never got the impression of a particularly dark or light ending, it was just neutral but also left to be interpreted.

Interpret it however you like, but Enid was the poster child for young adult suicide. It is very easy to see why so many people believe that it was a suicide. There are no mental gymnastics needed for that interpretation and it fits with the tone of the original story very well. It is okay to not have everything have a happy ending. Some stories end tragically, especially with a protagonist as flawed as Enid.

Well, either this is a tribute to the ending in 400 Blows or it is possibly a suicide. The bus bench says "No Service" and yet it comes at the end to pick up the old man who probably died. So when Enid gets on, it can only mean suicide. Otherwise, it's just nonsense.

Myth busted: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_World_(comics) In a 2002 interview,[5] Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff were asked if the ending of the film adaptation was a metaphor for suicide. Daniel replied "Yeah, it could be. It's hard to figure out why people have that response. The first time I heard that I said, 'What? You're out of your mind. What are you talking about?' But I've heard that hundreds of times."

Oh, I didn't specify what I was talking about. The creator of the comic book talks about how in his mind she doesn't commit suicide at all. The director also has vocalized confusion, saying that wasn't his intent.

It's funny because people in the movie theater were clapping at the ending and surely they didn't view it as suicide either...younger audiences may interpret the metaphor. The theater I saw this at had an older crowd.

While it is an interesting theory, I think Enid simply just wanted to move on and start a new life as she felt like a ghost to society, kind of like the old man did. Hence the movie’s title Ghost World

Then why have the old man? Why have the bus line be out of service, and the bus be so old? I am sorry, but if they wanted the ending to be about her needing to leave to grow up, the other details would make no sense... I am honestly confused how so many people miss this. @@hannahlang6316 who? an 18 year old taking only the essentials and intending to come back to get the rest of her things once she gets settled. you sound young. Norman did not have a suitcase so he may have died. if he did die, then that would have given Enid even more incentive to leave that tired town. how many old men leave town with nothing?? Murcans have this anal fixation on suicide. remember this story was set in the early 90's. they didn't back then. the country was a much better and more optimistic place back then......yea, i've been around a while. not quite as old as Norman though.

@@TheLinuxYes see I saw it more as a metaphor- Norman had nothing with him but himself and the suit he was wearing. Enid had a small suitcase. Perhaps it wasn’t her essentials, because we know she’s attached to her belongings and I feel would’ve taken them all with her. What could her suitcase symbolize?? Unfinished business. All her hopes and dreams. Norman was old and done with life, so he didn’t have unfinished business. Therefore he didn’t need a suitcase. And eh, I guess I’m young- I’m in my early 20s. But maybe the ending is subjective. Maybe Enid’s fate is exactly what you think it is, and whatever you think happens is the correct answer. I read somewhere that she’s on the bus alone and goes over a bridge which could represent the river styx. It’s an interesting theory.
