I built and painted the 3D printed Ghost Trap from Charlesworth Dynamics, as featured on Tested.com.
I want to thank my friends Andy Couch and Roger Dean for having the tools, the talent, and the time on their hands to help me with this project. Andy printed (and reprinted) the 3D parts for me. Roger helped by letting me use his shop and with building advice on the metal parts.
I also want to thank my wife, Amy, for tolerating my hobby and putting up with over a month's worth of parts and paint strewn about with the promise of a project completion "soon."
I upgraded some of the PLA plastic parts with metal parts from the Charlesworth Dynamics Etsy store and the store at GBFans.com. I did this to give the prop a more "real" feel when you pick it up and handle it.
The original code provided by Charlesworth Dynamics was also tweaked and updated by two members of GBFans.com forum, EctoLabs and gpstar. I don't know either one of these guys, but I did use the code both of them posted to update the Arduino board that runs the trap.
It took me just over a month to sand, Bondo, prime, sand, paint, prime, sand, paint, sand some more, paint, and sand the 3D printed parts, working in my spare time. I also assembled all the hardware and tested before attempting to install inside the finished trap body.
The inside consists of two tiny servos with tiny gears and a tiny chain drive system, two speakers, three NeoPixel Jewel LEDs, enough wire to be a pain to sort out, and three boards to control the lights and servos. There's also a pump attached to two eCigs that burn glycerin to produce the smoke. The whole thing runs on a rechargeable battery and there's a hidden charge port.
I weathered the ghost trap to make it look like it was 35+ years old and had been used and maintained (somewhat poorly) for over three decades.
