I fell in love with Ghostbusters in the late 80s. The movies, the cartoon, the toys, all of it. For years in the 90s and early 2000s I hunted down every article, every interview, every bit of Hollywood gossip about a 3rd Ghostbusters movie. Dan Aykroyd was always confident it was *definitely* gonna happen "soon". Fans found copies of old scripts that never got produced, casting rumors with Ben Stiller, Chris Farley, Alyssa Milano, Bill Hader, Anna Faris, etc. Then in 2014 when Harold passed, we accepted that a 3rd movie would never happen. There was some excitement around the 2016 reboot but most fans felt it was handled the wrong way. Paul Feig makes great parody films, but nobody really wanted a parody of Ghostbusters. So after that movie happened, we REALLY never expected a continuation of the original canon. Then one day in 2019 they announced GB3 with a surprise teaser trailer and that it would be directed by the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. My mind was blown, but I still didn't believe it was actually gonna happen. After 3 release delays because of Covid it finally hit theaters and while it's not a perfect movie (no movie is) this is 10000% what my soul wanted and needed from this movie. I took my whole family (12 of us) to see it in theaters over Thanksgiving and it was really emotional because we ALL love this franchise and the movie. Our mom had passed away the year before, and we know she would have loved it too. Damn, so glad you reacted to this and really glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is not just a great sequel, but it's also one of the best Ghostbusters fan films. I say it's a fan film because it's directed by Jason Reitman, Ivan Reitman's son, and the first official Ghostbusters fan. He used to visit his father on the set of the first film. He not only had a cameo in the first film that got cut (he reused the footage for the news report that Gary shows Phoebe and Podcast), he also appeared in Ghostbusters II as one of the kids at the party scene at the start of the film. Jason is a talented director on his own (he gave us Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Jennifer's Body (only as a producer), and Up In The Air. He's got a new film coming out, Saturday Night, which recounts the making of the first episode of Saturday Night Live, back when it was just called Saturday Night). Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a family affair, and it's clear that it was made with respect to the previous films (at least the first two).

One cool fact about filming is that director Jason Reitman’s dad who did the first two movies was on set helping him and would hang with the B-Team making sure his son’s vision was met while Jason was doing main scenes. Before Harold Ramis died he and Bill Murray made peace. When I watched this originally I was already moved beyond anything I'd expected by the final Egon scenes.. and then "For Harold" popped up on screen and it just broke me. I had to go google about and this movie pretty much is what I thought it was; a love letter and farevel to Harold Ramies from his Ghostbusting palls.
@chessenthusiast2 ай бұрын
In many ways, this was just a standard “requel.” A rehashing of the first movie, with lots of old characters to pass the torch to the new ones. And in general, I’m not a fan of requels, cause they tend to be lazy and unoriginal, and blatant cash grabs… But this one was special, I think not only because it was made with such respect and heart, but because of the real-life story behind getting it made. They had tried to get a third movie made for decades, and the fans were forced to just wait and hope… and it just never happened. Then, I remember when Ramis passed in 2014, I was so sad, and there was all the drama between him and Murray that had gotten in the way of making that third movie, and I thought, “Well crap, we’ll never get it now.” Then there was the 2016 version, which wasn’t bad, but felt like a slap in the face to the fans. Not because of the female cast, but because fans had been begging for a sequel for so long, only to be let down again and again. But as soon as Ramis passes, THAT’S when you make a new Ghostbusters movie?! And it has NOTHING to do with the original films?! It just felt like they purposefully waited, just to piss everyone off. Even if the cast and crew of GB16 didn’t deserve all the hate, by the same token, the fans didn’t deserve the disrespect. And then, we finally get this. Rich with family drama, a continuation and conclusion of the Gozer storyline; and the way they explored Callie’s relationship (or lack thereof) with Egon, and the way the OG crew split up and then made peace with each other, and seeing Callie realize and understand and accept that her father didn’t abandon her, he was trying to protect her… it was just very masterfully done. I get emotional every time I watch this movie. IF you’re going to do a requel, THAT’S how you do it. I’m looking at you, Star Wars.

I really liked the movie when I saw it in the cinema. Because in my opinion, it was Ghostbusters and a legitimate sequel. After the debacle of 2016 (sorry, my opinion too), I was expecting a good story that would somehow tie in with the first two movies. I was especially excited about the way they handled Harold Ramis/Egon Spengler at the end to honor him. Not saying anything, just letting him act. In my eyes, that was absolutely top class, as were the small cameos by the others. 😊

One thing that stood out to me watching your reaction more than anyone else's is the degree to which the "lore" is sort of meaningless to anything but the most hardcore fans, and I think going back to your original reaction makes it obvious why: the story of the original Ghostbusters is not particularly important. The script for this lays in a ton of direct references to the original movie's ghost lore that appears to have no impact on you despite watching the original just a couple of weeks ago, because when you watched that movie, none of that stuff was important. A valuable lesson for future Ghostbusters movies: focus on the broad strokes, not the small ones. (To be quite honest, you're the first person to recognize Egon *in* the prologue instead of like an hour later. I'd certainly have assumed more reactors would remember one of the four original Ghostbusters on sight even though they're hiding his face -- they put plenty of emphasis on his glasses and hairstyle -- but even that seems to go over some people's heads. I know you watched Casper semi-recently but next time you see it that little cameo near the beginning may be more fun than it was before. I was exactly right about what your editor would do as a Whiplash reference, which I mentioned last week in the chat! I forgot to say in my Patreon comment: it *is* Olivia Wilde playing Gozer physically, and Shohreh Aghdashloo of "The Expanse" playing Gozer vocally. Also, "[*gunshot*]"? Come on, subtitle person. They are clearly lighting off firecrackers.♟

The story in the first Ghostbusters was very important as in 2.
@tylerfoster62672 ай бұрын
@@TimeVextorX Not sure what you mean when you say that. My point is that the movie conceptually tries to make it important but based on the KZbin reactions I've seen to this so far, half of the references and connections seem to go completely over people's heads, so even if they're supposed to be important they aren't in execution. Also, when I say the story of the original movie isn't important, what I'm talking about is "important to the success/resonance of the film with audiences." Most people don't like Ghostbusters because of the plot, they like it because it is funny and it has an interesting concept. People remember the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper stuff not because they care about the ghost lore or what those concepts evoke in a sci-fi/fantasy sense, but because there are funny lines and moments that reference this information.

On the subject of 80s sequels shot in Canada standing in for the States, Short Circuit 2 was shot in Toronto. While the city it is set in is never explicitly identified, a minor story point weaved through the film, culminating in the final scene, definitely cements it as somewhere in the US.

Fun tidbit, the kind of sub-genre of adventure stories like this about kids in suburban settings uncovering supernatural, science fiction, or fantasy elements in an otherwise ordinary life is often referred to as "Kids On Bikes" which is also the name of a well-known TTRPG system that really helped coin the term and is built around all those kids of tropes (as well as some alternate spin-off game systems like Kids On Brooms and Teens in Space)

This is my favourite movie in the franchise, with the original a close 2nd and Frozen Empire 3rd. My next favourite is GB2, and I am completely ignoring the 2016 reboot. This was such a beautiful tribute to both Harold Remus and the Egon character. The role of Phoebe was made for McKenna, she plays smart characters really well. If you haven't seen Gifted (2017), it is a must. She really is the Egon of this new generation of Ghostbusters. And I love the very dry jokes she told in this. The character is quite obviously on the spectrum. Podcast, Hilarious. Laughed at most of the jokes. His enthusiasm is quite infectious. He's the Ray of the group. Her brother, Wolf (I've forgotten the characters name) is the Peter, the sceptic/fraud of the team. His girlfriend is their Winston of the team. even though some people call the movie "nostalgia bait", the story was really well told, with the right amount of heart, and I always tear up when it gets to that scene too. Such a beautiful tribute to the lost member of the team.

Ray’s tattoo says Revalations when it should say Revalation. It’s singular not plural and I only know this now because of Longlegs. And the quote is paraphrased. I only know this because i just now had to look this up. Also I really want to move to Canada. Like anywhere in Canada. Please just let me in. I have specialized and in demand skills. Is there a dating site for Americans looking for Canadian partners. I was actually born near the border but raised in the southern US. I’m sick of the heat and humidity…and other things.

There's ONLY 4 ghostbusters movies... no true fan will even remotely entertain the idea of the "all girls" 2016 film as part of the franchise

Movie critics are just trying to justify their jobs. I cant tell you how many 80s and 90s great movies were panned by sour people trying to be different. Seems like everybody wants to be another Gene Siskel, when we need more Roger Eberts. Lol

They took a very funny comedy, removed all the jokes, and turned it into YA fantasy fiction. Bleh! It’s not for me.

Absolutely the best Ghostbusters movie since the Original, hands down (in my not so-humble opinion). It recaptures the fun, sets up a new generation / franchise, and brings it all home with a reunion that brought a tear or two to even this cynical old a$$hole's eye. Great casting too, Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard are always solid players but Paul Rudd and McKenna Grace are are absolutely brilliant. Second time she's worked with an Avenger. 36:42 I'm not crying, you're crying....and I'm crying. Alright fine, we're all crying. 😢🥲
