Saw this in the cinema last year, got it on BD on release day to watch with my daughter. So heartbreaking to hear of Ivan Reitman's death, but glad he lived to see his son take up the proverbial Proton Wand and deliver something so spectacular. Obviously tonally very different to Ivan's two films, but respectful of those films and of Harold Ramis' legacy, and a heap of fun to boot. It's as much a love letter to Ghostbusters as it is to 80s family cinema in general. The Goonies was a very clear influence on this movie.

I’ve been hearing a lot of theories ‘bout how Egon died. I do personally think he sacrificed himself to prevent Zuul from possessing him and therefore being able to find and freeing the Gate Keeper and consequently bringing the end of the world. As you can clearly see, in his final moments, the PK meter transforms into something like a taser which I think he used as a last resort mean to kill himself and prevent the end of all things. Zuul wouldn’t have ever killed Egon without having freed the Gat Keeper before

"He wanted her to save Summertown." I think you are confused about what would have happened had the ghostbusters not stopped Gozer in New York. Summertown is basically a backwater shithole with a small population - do you really think that Gozer would have been satisfied with such a meagre offering? Come to think of it the very fact that Shandor made his last stand there is just such lazy writing - what's the use in a sacrificial pyre the size of a mere town?

I think Egon knew he was going to die. He probably knew for a long time this was going to happen. He was the smartest Ghostbuster after all. Winston said it himself that being a Ghostbuster teaches you not to be afraid. That likely includes being afraid of death. He had a long time to prepare himself for this moment. The only thing he couldn't control was who was going replace him: he had to do something he likely didn't want to do, which was simply to have faith. Egon was very brave, even in this moment. He activated the P.K.E Meter...and used it on himself. His death looked natural because the taser harms ghosts. So...what happens to the human the ghost is trying to possess? After all, this the guy willing to do a trepanning on himself.

It wasn't just a reference though... that was the point. Ivo found the temple to Gozer in his mine, and after he started worshipping her/it, constructed the building from the first movie as a means of allowing her/it to enter our world more easily. After he died, his will was to have his body preserved inside the temple, that he might be brought back to life to serve her when she reawakens. It's meant as a trope of the greedy old rich guy who's afraid of death, and looking for a means... however evil... to live forever.

I can't remember where i read about it but, in the original ghostbusters movie sigourney weaver while filming the possession scene. She grabbed one of the special effects guys hands coming up through the chair and placed it directly on her breast. I guess because the crews was trying hard specifically not to grab certain areas on her, and it was causing the scene to take forever to film and causing unwanted delays. Bet it shocked some of the crew though.

Many people as I heard are wondering how did egon actually die? Well if you closely the terror dog is actually trying to posses him cause if you look closely at 4:25 you can see his hands go up and cover his eyes which is presumably the target for possession and I guess they went to violent and accidentally killing him. You feel bad for him here. The silly, socially awkward but a hero and a good friend we see in 1 and 2 is now from this scene alone. Everybody in the town wants nothing to do with him and has prob spent years trying to prepare for this moment. You can tell he is stressed, has not had any sleep, and knows he only has one shot at this and is anxious and rushing but can’t put to much pressure on his body due to his age. I feel like if he were to survive this and the trap worked I have a feeling that he would actually start focusing on and reside with his family cause this is legit see that this is the final big battle for him. cause in the scenes of the film he had pictures of his daughter and I am assuming pics of his grandkids in his lab showing that he extremely cares abt them and wants to see them, and does not want to die and leave his family to do the stuff he willingly put himself through. He was old, barely took care of himself, very highly stressed and having had a significant physical exertion already. He was probably already close to having a heart attack and the PKE meter electro thing just stopped his heart thereby preventing the possession by the Keymaster. With no one around to restart it he simply died there a few minutes later.

I'd say it's probable that Sony and co want to capitalise on how well received this movie was. My bet is with the air now cleared between the original team, and given the post-credits scene, Winston will put some of his fortune back into the old firehouse to clean it up and get the old place running again, using it as a place where he... along with Phoebe and the other kids... can create a new team for future movies.

Probably bad blood. They were struggling to make ends meet and whatever job they could get was being blown off as unimportant by Egon who knew about Gozer’s return. And as Ray said, one day they come in and Egon and all the equipment including the ecto 1 are gone. For 10 years he never called so that’s definitely enough time for Ray to become bitter and with the fact that ghost activity was decreasing, it all culminated into Ray choosing not to believe who he thought was his friend.

But the mist of the dog disappeared before grabbing Egon. Then the arms came out of the chair like they did to Dana. Possible Egon planned this so he could become a ghost. But why he thought he could go up against Gozer by himself is the question. I know hes smart but that is a weird 1.

I actually don't quite understand this scene. To me, Egon committed suicide to prevent his body from being taken over by one of those demon dogs which is why in the end of the clip, you can see it flying off while Egon's dead body is left behind in the chair. I think that's what it is.

if you watched the movie you would know the demons were a red light the one you saw at the end and a blue one the one trapped in the machine he got killed by the demon because he caused to many problems for them. so he didnt commit suicide his spirit had unfinished business.

Am I the only one to find it endearing that at the beginning they kept his face in the shadows like that? Yes, I know Harold Ramis (RIP) has been gone for eight years, and that is really some other actor. However with the suspension of disbelief this gives the ghostbusters a drama/horror feel that they always wanted to have with the first one.

This was fucking terrifying at the cinema due to surround sound and being in the best seat and it's a great use of how the original ghostbusters was about friendship and the new one proposes about family.

The howl at the scene of his demise is proof the counter-measure to harm the ghost caused his accidental death, a condition he was probably aware of but the viewers wasn't. If I had 40 years and Egon's brain, it could actually helped out a lot after Vigo if some other ghost ever tried to possess another Ghostbuster. He was ready to roll the dice and when he hurt the beast to run off knowing Gozer would not ever fully resurrect he had to have faith that his fellow Ghostbusters would, that is where Janine would come into contact probably giving a call to alert all the others to come together to bust Gozer one final time. After the entire fact that pretty much everyone was needed to hurt Gozer again after regaining it's strength it falls back on the default plan and Egon finally was able to manifest to finish his unfinished business I think it was kind of like Bleach rules- A spirit is born from the dead, the dead is tethered to a object or place, after much suffering or forced eviction it becomes a ghost, then other ghosts are fed to another ghost to become more powerful, a mixed bag of nuts until out of all those voices and pain comes a single entity, ect.. Egon's process was finished before his death caused too much suffering to turn into a true ghost.. I would like the Ghostbusters to go into this direction, not as just busting ghost but trying to prevent the dead from becoming monsters that they have to 'bust' and imprison.. who would agree to see Phoebe as the first Para-psychotherapist?

The ghost doesn't. Egon killed himself by stopping his heart with the PKR meter shocking thing. This prevented his possession by the Keymaster, but without someone to restart it and given his age and poor physical condition he simply died there.
