If it is a stand off the gun is up and leveled.. At twenty feet a competent police officer will dump five shots in your body before you get the 24 feet. In reality when police are used in these scenarios they do tend to move, deflect and fire if the gun is in the holster. In some cases if it is a stand off the officer will move to his weak side and fire as he circles the attack. I saw one officer get the jump on the knife guy and run up and knock him down. In the olden days (revolver training) when a subject closed with you you used the firearm like a knife making. Contact shots while you moved in a circle away from the suspects knife hand..

Better advice: Never bring an unchambered gun to any kind of fight. ( As of 4/2/2021 there's a really helpful edit at the very bottom if you wanna skip... edit 9) Edit: Someone in the comments really said "Just throw the gun" 💀💀💀 Edit 2: Shout out to Austin Woodworth in my replies who said, "Carrying unchambered is like trying to put your seatbelt on during a crash" Well said 👏🏾 Edit 3: 1 year later and somebody really just called me out for making so many edits 💀💀😂 Edit 4: Epic Gaming seems salty I'm making so many edits, but really he just tryna be the next one so I guess he's right 🤷🏾♂️ He wins. Extra points for censoring"fcking" cuz we were all absolutely fcking clueless 🙄😂 Edit 5: Somehow I missed this, but one year ago Peteboss said, "Don't play russian roulette at a gun fight" 💯💯 Well said 👏🏾 Edit 6: Some of y'all are acting like it's dangerous to carry chambered, but if you're not disciplined enough to carry chambered, you're not disciplined enough to carry at all. Edit 7: "What if I throw said knife" 💀💀💀Not gonna lie, his comment is probably better than mine and it's the only one over 1k likes on this video. Run up his likes too 💯 Might as well keep dropping firearms tips for y'all. Someone commented "Or back up while firing," and, while it seems reasonable and well intentioned, having extensively training to fire while moving in different directions, that's just a really bad idea. For one, there's a pretty decent chance you'll trip or bump in to something if you're actually moving backwards fast enough to make a difference. (There's actually a proper technique but it's a pretty slow movement) For two, being the aggressor and firing while moving forward gives you a major advantage and usually catches the attacker off guard and they'll panic. It's a dominant move and when someone's marching straight at you with a gun, you'll probably think twice about what you wanna do since the bad guy would expect the good guy to run away. There's plenty more reasons but this is getting long. Edit 8: OMG OKAAAY! I hear you! HERE'S ANOTHER EDIT! I've been told to just fucking make another edit for no reason or talk about hairless guinea pigs by at least 10 people and it's been a while. Fun Fact: Hairless Guinea pigs have hair on their feet and they eat more than regular guinea pigs because they burn more calories to stay warm. Morale of the story, don't shave your pubes or you'll have to eat a lot. (Yes I know... 100% sound logic with zero flaw in it. Don't even bother trying to argue it) Edit 9: This is for people who say you should back up. Your draw time shouldn't be longer than 1.7 seconds if you train and that isn't long enough to move a significant distance. Distance = Rate x Time and the amount of distance you would need to move at a high rate of speed to actually gain time is first of all literally impossible going backwards, and second of all it would drastically reduce your draw time more than the time it would save by creating distance, and thirdly you have a much higher chance of missing the guy even if you're highly trained. Realistically, you're only moving about 5 feet backwards in 1.7 seconds, while the guy running at you is gaining roughly 25fps... You're only saving 25 hundredths of a second total. Terrible odds especially when you factor in that you're draw is gonna take a lot longer (Sure add a foot or two to your distance if you like) and plus you're likely to miss a critical shot that would actually stop the dude even if you shoot in time. So in the end, your net gain is actually a loss of time for every step you take backwards in the scenario that you actually need to get your gun out in a hurry.

Yes but the reason is not the same. A bayonet on a gun is used as a last resort when you run out of bullets. It is not designed to be a fighting knife. Typically the bayonet is NOT full tang and is has a lower quality steel than a fighting knife. That said, I personally prefer a bayonet that is designed as a fighting knife. The hand guard on the knife protects my knife hand better than other knife accessories. The handle allows quickly changing the grip without looking or using the other hand. I prefer using a forward mantis grip were the blade edge is up instead of down. A karambit is even faster than a bayonet but with fewer practical grip options. Both are effective at disarming an attacker.

Couple things - whoever attacks first has a major advantage. This is one fact that can make being a cop so difficult. - unless it's a shotgun, one shot probably won't stop someone immediately. - the person with the gun can sidestep and otherwise retreat while firing. He can also retreat around obstacles, like a car or table, while firing. He can also free up a hand to try to stop the knife while firing. It would be wise to do so. You'd rather the knife go through your hand than through your lung. - Jaime is holding the knife upside down. A straight grip is faster. The ice pick grip is only really needed if you need more power, which he doesn't. All in all, I think this test did illustrate something important. You should be wary of someone who wishes to do you harm whether you're armed or not.

Where I live people just shoot on there own properties so you can easily practice something such as drawing while concealed. I could see that being difficult if you live in the city as many ranges do not allow drawing from holster at all or without an additional level of membership. Even with this, i lived in Charlotte for a while and while I was there you could practice using dummy rounds which allow for repeated dry firing and manual action cycling. Those made it easy to practice getting it out and stanced quickly, you just don't know how accurate you are without really doing it at a range. @@olivertrevino8092 The two rounds rule is a pretty sane detail that I haven't heard before. It's definitely possible to immediately disable a sprinting attacker in one shot, but hardly something you can count on. Not to mention if you're quick-drawing and more or less shooting from the hip. In many of the knife vs gun tests where the knife attacker gets hit 'just in time', they'd likely just keep running and, at best, just leave their knife buried in the gunman's gut or chest. If you have enough time to unload multiple rounds into them, I guess it's safe to assume they'll be hurt enough for the gunman to at least have the advantage in hand-to hand combat if they close the distance regardless.

@animistchannel29837 жыл бұрын
The "pommel meme" started on a popular KZbin channel by Skallagrim a few years ago. Skallagrim is a great guy who does sword/knife reviews and also practices HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). At one point, he referenced a medieval fencing/dueling textbook where the pommel-throwing idea was described as a way to get a surprise opening attack. [Recently, JoergSprave actually built a spring-loaded pommel-shooting sword to honor the idea: "How To End Dem Elves 'n Hobbits Rightly"] Anyway, the idea of "ending him rightly" caught on and spread around the internet. I have even seen references to it on "PBS Spacetime," which is a theoretical physics channel. Some ideas just take on a life of their own :) As for the real world, here is my original post about knife vs gun in close-order operations (I was part of some 1990's demos): "In tests like this between actual policemen and martial artists, the knife consistently had advantage way out to 30 feet (9 meters), even without tactics like dive-rolling to close distance and mess with the gun's aim. If you add some element of surprise or dive-rolling by the knife attacker, the knife wins from 35+ feet. In younger days, I could close that distance with 3 steps and a dive roll, rising into melee range in under 2 seconds -- and as a variable-profile target with high inertia in my favor. The expressions were priceless, and the reactions were both spooked and hilarious. Even trained officers can get freaked out when they have 100 kilograms tumbling at 20 kph pop up right in their face, blade first, with a grappling expert behind it :> My favorite reaction from an officer was: "So... you're still one of the good guys, right?!" My answer: "Yah, but someone else might not be." Tests like this caused many police departments to change their close-order operations strategy."

Sometimes they aren't very smart. Why does James start with a knife in his hand in a running position, but Adam start with a holstered gun. This test assumes that you're not already holding the gun when you clearly see the other person is holding a weapon, assumes that the gun needs to be cocked or a round is not chambered and also assumes the person holding the gun is not going to move or do anything to block the knife. Too many variables being ignored.

If they are in the act of doing something illegal sure, but then the police would also know of it and have their guns drawn. There's also many other factors to consider. Getting that one perfect stab in to stop your opponent isn't easy. Most likely the gun user with a pistol won't be standing still and will have his free hand/arm getting in the way of the stab. The knife wielder could probably hurt the gunman, but the gunman has way more stopping power with his pistol. The knife user stopping the gunman from getting shots off is insanely difficult. This experiment is fun and shows you how dangerous knife wielders can be where they can get to you way quicker than you think, but it also doesn't show the chaos of a real fight.

There's so much nuance to this question, because besides the speed/distance question, knife wounds are much more survivable than gun wounds. A clean stab wound has to be in just the right spot to do deadly damage. Right in the heart or a major blood vessel. Even a punctured lung is survivable if you get help fast enough. Gun wounds though, they do explosive damage. They not only cause the entry wound which is usually small, the exit wound tends to be big, and/or if it stays inside it does a lot more damage than a knife. It will wreck a lot of blood vessels and has a much higher chance of actually killing you

Why have the gun on safety if there's no round in the chamber? That doesn't make any sense what so ever... The police have what's called I believe the 21 foot rule which states that a man armed with a knife is a danger to the cop if he's within 21 feet of him, you have to also remember that almost every time, it takes multiple gunshots to drop an attacker. It's not like in the movies where a someone under stress can just draw a gun, shoot the attacker once and drop him, that's not how it works in the real world. In reality it usually takes 3-5 shots if not more (and that's if every shot you fire hits the moving target while you're acting on a split second decision while in fight or flight mode)...
@freman0076 жыл бұрын
The Tueller drill, and yes. If you're a highly skilled gun user, and you're aware that you're under attack you can probably draw and put multiple bullets into an attacker before they stab you to death if there's 21 feet of space. Of course in a surprise attack you're not going to be aware that you're under attack. You may well freeze for a second. As you say a single gunshot probably won't stop someone attacking... for a regular person in a normal situation, you probably want 30 feet of clearance. The big problem with the 21 foot rule is that it makes it hard to explain to a jury why you blew away that guy who was 25 feet away from you, was blading (turning his body half away from you to conceal his actions) and whose dominant hand had dropped to their waist as if about to draw a weapon. Because they're programmed to think "well you're safe at 21 feet" when that was actually an absolute best case scenario, they need things carefully explained to them before they'll understand you acted in self-defense.

Problems with this Myth which slow down the gun draw: 1. Not trained on basic gun draw techniques. 2. The holster is not allowing to firearm to be drawn properly. (this looks to be costing about half the total time) 3. Firearm not cocked. (almost all CCW carriers understand the cost for time with this error.) 4. Wrong choice of firearm. It is bulky and does not fit in his hand properly. (Nobody carries a desert Eagle. Come on..) These things are so huge that this whole study would need to be done again with real world scenario.

This test isn't even realistic to begin with. If you shot a person who was sprinting at you with a knife, there is a good chance that the bullet would not be able to stop the momentum built up from sprinting from that distance, therefore not leaving the gunslinger safe. The person with the knife could keep moving forward and effectively stab the gunman. And also, just because the gunslinger has been stabbed does not mean that he/ she is unable to return fire at the knife wielder, therefore leaving the knife wielder unsafe as well. Just because a person is mortally wounded does not me they are incapable of fighting back. A person who receives a mortal wound in a fight (i.e. Gunshot wound or stab wound or any other injury) may not die for several minutes, hours, days, or ,as in one case, forty years leader after surgery complications. There is nothing this test could do to factor in the severity of the wounds or the ability to fight back while down, not even mentioning the role that the skill with a certain weapon would play in the whole scenario. Just my two cents.

Any professional/use of force instructor will tell you, you are at advantage with a knife at 21 feet. Couple things: 1) In real life, people who carry keep the gun cocked with the safety off 2) In this scenairio, the guy with the gun knows who his attacker is and is anticipating it which makes it easier than a real life scenario. 3) This is also under the ridiculous assumption one shot to the chest is going to stop a knife wielding attacker pumped with adrenaline and or drugs. Our instructor showed us a video of an armoured car guard shooting someone running at him with a knife 3 times in the chest and the attacker continues to fight for another 30 seconds and ends up killing the guard with a stab to the clavicle. Adrenaline can do amazing things. I have no idea why people underestimate the power of a knife, one stab under your armpit, to the femur or chest/clavicle it's game over. For some reason our society deems guns the ultimate killer, handguns aren't that great of a weapon balistically but they are convenient. I would take a knife over a gun at close range 9 times out of 10.

The guy that kept fighting for 30 seconds after getting shot 3 times probably wouldn't have gone down any faster had he been stabbed instead.

+Smith Wesson When I carry, I carry without a round in the chamber. It's a one in a million chance I'll ever even NEED my gun, but it's a one in a billion chance that the extra half-second it takes me to chamber a round will make the difference between life and death. Most of the CCTV and other live-shooter footage I've seen has been where the concealed carrier has ample time hiding in the background to draw, cock, aim, and fire because the thugs are distracted with all the other people around. I don't go to bars or hang out in dangerous places, so I'm not likely to be in a situation where I need to quick draw like in the old west. Besides, I carry a knife for self-defense far more than I carry a gun (for now). If it's a quick-draw situation I'm going for my knife and closing the gap.

The biggest issue with this myth is the word "Never". I've owned 9 different revolvers in my lifetime, 7 of which would be considered accurate to the time period described. If I were dealing with an assailant within the 16 foot range, I would trust an Allen's revolver or "pepperbox" as it is sometimes called; however, it has no sights. In comparison, a 9 inch Richard Mason conversion takes 1-2 seconds to draw; however, it is more accurate. Also, the term "Knife" is quite subjective as well (pocket knife vs a 12 inch bowie knife). In addition, let's not also forget the physical fitness and manual dexterity of the knife wielder vs the gun slinger. For the scope of a pop-science tv show, I feel they answered the question, but I do believe more experimentation is needed.

@jefferydaniels56729 жыл бұрын
number3665 Depends on how you train. There are many close quarter training methods that make a gun just as, if not, more effective than a knife. Someone can get stabbed or cut multiple times without the wounds being life threatening whereas being shot is a little more traumatic. Another thing to remember is that the closer someone is, the harder it is to miss and I only need one hand to shoot the other could be deflecting the knife. If you're a smart and you conceal carry, you've thought ahead about the possibility of a knife being drawn on you and there is already a round chambered so you won't be fumbling with the gun like Adam and Jamie (obviously they are not professional shooters). I've watched multiple CCW defense trainers do demonstrations with these scenarios and they are vastly different in speed and technique leading me to believe that neither Adam nor Jamie have had adequate training with real guns (not props) to conduct this experiment in a manner that boasts accurate results. They didn't even have a professional tactical defense trainer come in as a guest on the show for demonstrations, perpetuating a very Californian anti-gun undertone to the show. Also, isn't there a saying as old as guns themselves that one shouldn't bring a knife to a gun fight?
@number36659 жыл бұрын
Seth Pomeroy There are lots of saying that are wrong. People skilled with a knife have killed people with guns all the time. And we are talking close quarters not a variety of other scenarios. Small room, corridor, crawl space, anywhere you'd rather have a shotgun than a rifle. Like you say it is how good you are with the knife or gun. And if we're talking adrenaline fueled professionals it'll take more than one shot to put them down and they won't go for any area that isn't a kill. Take military knife training for example face to face they always go for the throat. And you have little chance of surviving with a ka-bar in your neck. It's quiet too so you can take multiple targets without being heard. But it's less about the weapon and more about who is using the weapon. And I think the moral they were getting at is don't underestimate your opponent, just because you have a gun doesn't mean you're a god among men. Only way to settle this is have the worlds greatest bladed weapons expert go against the worlds greatest pistol sharpshooter and see who comes out on top 9 times out of 10.

Your argument is completely destroyed by the simple fact that other countries police forces handle the exact same situations, with non lethal force, and with no more injuries to the cops. Somehow America is the only western nation where almost every "dangerous" situation requires someone to die, excessively. And it's no mystery how it has become like this, the reason why is well known. It's partly because: 1. US cops are often alone, for some unfathomable reason. Cops should always be at least 2, self explanatory. It's a safety issue for both the cop and the civilian. 2. US cops are shockingly undereducated! The average US cop gets 19 weeks of training, in Germany police training last at least 130 weeks! 19 vs 130... yeah I know which officer I will be calling. 3. US cops are trained to not take any risks, even though they are in a profession where taking risk is essential for doing a good job. "Shoot first, ask questions later" has never been good police work. Look, I could get into lots of reasons and details here, but the main underlying problem is their training. Most cops are not evil, they are simply not qualified to handle the situations that come with the job.

Terry Mcginnis You do realize that the title of the myth and the title of the video all state specifically about bringing a knife to a gun fight. I have one thing to improve this test. At first the knife wins only when the attacker has his knife ready in his hand. I would consider trying with both competitors having the weapons in the holster/shieth. And than lets measure the distance when the knifeguy is the attacker vs the gunguy is the attacker. I think then the gun will win.
@leoridgeback316411 жыл бұрын
Other things to consider, as others have said: Factors outside this experiment: 1. keep gun loaded/cocked 2. create distance between knifer (move away while pulling gun) limitations of this situation: 1. shooter could have hip fired (no need to assume aiming position) 2. shooter stopped aiming gun early, as seen in slow mo cam (prob didn't want to poke knifer in face) Other things: 1. this knife/gun comparison assumes the knifer initiates attack and has weapon out first. obviously a gun already out > knife (barring a jam) 2. surprise knife attack within reach > gun (shooter might still get a shot off) Outside of some specific situations, which are difficult to predict in real-life situations, can't assume either trumps either.

Carrying a revolver doesn't magically make you shoot faster, it actually might put you at a disadvantage due to the lower number of rounds and the fact that the barrels are longer, meaning it might take longer to take out of the holster. A standard 9mm is more effective than a revolver and that is why most police forces use it now.

There are two distinct viewpoints through which you can examine this myth. One perspective interprets it as a genuine gunfight resembling a duel, where both participants are aware that a confrontation will unfold. The alternative viewpoint likens the situation to a real-life scenario, where an individual armed with a gun remains oblivious to an impending knife attack. In the context of the first interpretation, the conducted test was generally effective, although an improvement could have been made by ensuring the gun was properly loaded. Regarding the second scenario, a more authentic approach would have involved introducing multiple knife-wielding assailants. In this setup, the person holding the gun would be unaware of when and by whom an attack would be launched, lending greater realism to the simulation, in my personal opinion.
