The Wutang Clan early albums were classic works of art in any genre of music. These albums raised me in a way that no other type of music has ever done. Growing up in Staten Island in the 90s during that time was epic. When Ghostface Killah album IRONMAN came out it was dope and still is. I remember listening to ALL THAT I GOT IS YOU for the 1st time and being blown away. It's an emotional depiction of struggle that paints a beautiful picture. This was the 1st album RZA had to do outside of his basement. He said ghosts voice sounds different than it did on OB4CL bc he had individual compressors set up for each persons vocals. After the flood they had to switch spots and the equipment and set up was different.
@FordFourD-aka-Ford4D3 жыл бұрын
I heard him say the same thing but for why the solo Wu albums he *didn't* produce have different vocal tones.
@cbfwebs3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think when RZA produced this album he still could EQ Ghost's vocal compression. No matter what studio.
@FordFourD-aka-Ford4D3 жыл бұрын
@@cbfwebs Yeah, exactly! And it's not like they were recording everything in RZA's basement. That's not where the different tube amps snd compressors for each member were. Most of the actual recording starting with _Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers_ was done at *Morningstar* (the home studio depicted in the show) and then various professional recording studios - including some while they were on tour like in San Francisco.
@cbfwebs3 жыл бұрын
@@FordFourD-aka-Ford4D I thought Morningstar rd was at RZA's moms house situated between Park Hill and Stapleton? I always imagined the floods happening there. And I know they saved up and recorded "Protect Ya Neck" professionally and then 36 Chambers album at Firehouse Studios on the dime of Loud Records and Rifkind. The show implies that RZA had albums already recorded by the members waiting to be signed to labels. I know the flood messed up Tical and during 36 Chambers promotional run, RZA and Meth had to rerecord it to meet Def Jam's deadline. Ghost said Genius was workin on Liquid Swords while him and Rae was recording Cuban Linx. Its alot of stories. Each one may have been at different studios. They say in the liner notes to the albums. Also, of quick note, if the floods never happened, you think beaides Deck, that U-God, Masta Killa & Cappadonna would have got their fully RZA-produced debut classics? I have always wondered if the floods stopped his overall plan of having them all go solo with his original Wu Sound.
@FordFourD-aka-Ford4D3 жыл бұрын
@@cbfwebs Yeah Morningstar Road is by the Bayonne Bridge, it's nowhere near Park Hill or Stapleton Heights. RZA's moms' house COULD easily have been located between those two neighborhoods, but no way it would be located on Morningstar. As far as the albums being done: it's known that RZA essentially had the PRODUCTION for those different albums done. And maybe rhymes were written already written for many of them. In fact, it's likely that "lo-fi" cassette tape copies exist for many of those lost beats (see the part in this video where Ghost talks about the fabled "yellow box"). Some were maybe recreated, but if you've ever lost a beat… you know that some are hard to re-produce after you've stepped away from it for enough time - even with a good copy to guide you. They likely wouldn't have wanted to record over tape copies (nowadays people love that "vintage"/"lo-fi" sound), so new beats had to be made. Deck's lost album's worth of beats is the best known example, but it has also been stated in various sources that Jamel, Cappa, U-God, and some other Wu-Tang Productions affiliated artists lost beats too. So yes, I think there is something to that part of it. I believe once a LONG time ago I read an online U-God interview about how he was supposed to get a mostly-RZA-produced solo album but they lost his beats in "one of the floods". I can't say if the floods necessarily changed RZA's plans for them. It affected it, sure, but also there were probably hundreds of factors over the years, and different ones for each person. And I think one factor in particular you gotta remember is the 5 Year Plan. After Wu-Tang Forever, that era was over. I think a lot of people had different plans for different things, where they wanted to go in their own personal lives for the next 5/10/15 years. Plus many of them we know wanted to try to make moves on their own and branch out. Raekwon has said that he made Immobilarity on his own with a new cast of collaborators because he was trying to get things done for himself and quicker. As time goes on and the group gets more prominent and people are having bigger families and their earlier kids are getting older, time constraints begin to pop up. It might start taking longer to produce beats, or rather as time went on it became harder to clear samples? There was an era in rap where sample clearance had gotten harder and Timbaland & The Neptunes became prominent because big commercial artists like Jay-Z knew they didn't have to clear any samples. And beyond just samples the beat styles in Rap are evolving too, RZA reportedly keeps hundreds of un-claimed/heard beats to himself spanning decades of time because he doesn't like to repeat himself, he's always making beats but also always ALWAYS moving forward. The 2010 Wu-Massacre single _Our Dreams_ was reported to be an older RZA beat that Mef/Ghost/Rae somehow got RZA to give them. I would guess Ghost liked the sample and had kept a tape copy for some time. But yeah, it's hard to say definitively if it was ONLY the floods that contributed to those brothers not getting RZA-produced solo albums. It's a lot of factors. These things get complicated and tricky. I can tell you that this sort of thing happens in large crews with one main producer all the time. Gang Starr Foundation and all the Guru/Premo artists spent years, even decades waiting for just a single DJ Premier beat. It has been said to me by people who were there in those years that Premo always carried that chip of unfinished production commitments on his shoulder. Apparently he frequently talked loudly about how he was still real or keeping it underground or for the culture or something when he produced Blaq Poet's _Tha Blaqprint_ album. But many of the artists under Gang Starr Foundation (some of which most fans have heard never of) who had turned down other deals and entrusted their careers to Premo had long moved on with their lives and knew they weren't well-known enough for Premo to actually block out time to work with them for real. Supposedly this is one of the reasons the group broke up and Guru didn't want to do business with Premo anymore. (It's not popular to say because their music together is so beloved, but Guru genuinely and _vocally_ wanted nothing to do with Premo after the breakup. Their differences were never resolved during the years before Guru's death, and it's kinda sad that ppl want to re-write history.) There are many other examples of situations like this that happened with large crews with few or only one primary beat maker, but I've already gone on too long! So all in all, I think that RZA did a fantastic job as the lead producer of a group of *10* rappers plus dozens of affiliated groups who all got hooked up with beats and actual album/compilation/single release dates. RZA made a lot of money for a lot of people and the volume of his production output from the 90s to the mid 2000s or so is staggeringly high. None of his peers that I can think of produced as many fully released songs in that time period as he did. He stated in _Of Mics and Men_ that he focused so much on music and producing and building up his team that unfortunately his family life took the backseat. That's a huge sacrifice he made for his brothers. And so as time went on he rebalanced his life and where he was spending his literally increasingly-more-valuable time.
