Cracks me up how Hbox’s dominance has led to increasingly desperate attempts to invalidate his ability, the latest being “A-actually Fox isn’t that good! Puff is a better and easier character!” Uh-huh, right, that’s why roughly half of the top 100 players main Fox while only a handful use Puff. Just suck it up fam, Hbox is the clutch god, the player with maybe the strongest mental game in history. The only one who could even challenge that is Armada. That’s why he’s on top and consistently beats a character with a 60-40 winning matchup.

There are more foxes in general because fox is seen as more fun to play, but once you're in top 100, general character matchups play an undeniably massive role. Puff is slow and dies early af against a top 8 character list with characters that are the fastest in the game that hit like trucks. There are only 5 puffs in the top 100, and only 2 in the top 50 including hbox. Puff is not as hard to play from a technical perspective, but applying her strengths against a roster like that is a mountain of task. I guarantee that puff would be seen as mid-tier at highest and not competitively viable without hbox. He's not overhyped by any stretch of the imagination.

No when you add in the fact that these are humans playing the game and not computers with outcomes that will always be perfect. Puff is top 3 at worst, debatably better than falco. Her only losing mu is against fox and even that matchup has been skewed by the fact that a fox can't play perfectly 100 percent of the time. Falco is near non existent at the top level of play, the only player with an once of consistency with him is mango and he's the most inconsistent god. Falco has dropped off so hard that its crazy that people think hes still top 2 despite not winning anything since pp left. Marth is the only other character that has a chance to combat her but she can crouch under his grab and punish him with a rest, and a grab is what Marth needs in that mu cause it sets up for all his kills. Stop acting like puff is a weaker character when there are players like jerry, Michael, and 2saint making waves with her.

When people say hbox is boring to watch, i always think that is...said from a position that hasnt self reflected. I mean i never liked watching any smash for a long time because i didnt get what they were doing. People say that the audience only watches melee for the fast 20xx plays, but honestly do you want people watching the game just cause its fast and flashy? Maybe. Money is money. But once i started watching it more, and understood what they were doing, it was more interesting to watch. Puff and hbox may initially seem boring to watch, but if you are trying to actually see what hes doing or thinking, which is hard, its really entertaining. Like its slow, but methodical. Hes thinking just as fast as everyone else, but plays slower, which is pretty interesting.

If Puff was so easy, then why don't more mediocre Puff players place well at tournaments?

At SmasCon, SFAT lost to Jerry, one of the best players in MDVA - a region that has been on a huge comeup recently. He used to play Fox for years but switched to Puff to be less reliant on techskill while still maintaining a competitive edge because he started focusing more on DBFZ and couldn't put in the training with fox as a result. Everyone agrees that Puff requires less techskill, but at the same time has less tools in 1v1 and other Top Tiers. But I wouldn't exactly call Jerry "a guy who just picked up melee", it's kinda disrespectful towards him as a top player, but oh well.

You don't need many tools when the ones you do have kill super early and have disjointed hitboxes that rival sword characters.

Sneaky Pete If I'm not mistaken, he played Puff before Fox, then switched to Fox, then switched back to Puff. At least, I've seen Xanadu's where he had a pocket Puff. So he's definitely played Puff for awhile. Still, I agree that it's pretty telling that Puff is busted.

I’m neutral about Hbox, but to see people dislikes this video, that sucks. We can’t all like Hbox, but it’s still an excellent player on Melee. Fox players are very present on Melee, but I also am neutral on that. Despite that, Melee is still a hype and not a dead game. 🙂
