I am Greek Orthodox. After many Orthodox readings on the topic, I do also agree that insisting that any spiritual apparition that frightens you is demonic is somewhat reductionist and oversimplifies reality. If you look at how people in the Bible (Eg, Daniel, Mary mother of Jesus, the women at Jesus' tomb) reacted to appearances of angels (the good kind!) delivering God's message, you will notice that they were initially fearful... naturally, because angelic beings are foreign to us, often described in terms that convey supernatural traits or fantastic authority, power and strength. They are certainly fearsome creatures and something to behold, so I'd imagine an initial reaction of fear would be natural. Having said that though, the feelings of fear are subsequently eased because in these cases the beings are clear to establish Who sent them (so you know who they are aligned with... meaning, God) and they tell the person not to be afraid. So I think it's important not to jump to conclusions if experiencing an apparition, but at the same time err on the side of caution and assume that we can be easily deceived, and hence avoid interaction (and consult a priest). If interaction is absolutely unavoidable, and their purpose is not made crystal clear creating feelings of confusion or fear, then in audible prayer to the triune God openly declare your allegiance and command them to communicate theirs immediately (and to leave if it differs to yours!) Looking at bible cases and patristic experiences as an example, it does seem though that angelic visits are quite rare, and generally don't happen as the norm for ordinary people! If you look at the cases in the Bible where they do appear, it's to deliver a very important, crucial message, and/or where a request by us in prayer to God has been made. There is a clear intention and purpose, which makes sense, considering that God's angels are messengers (and the Saints our aids). They don't really concern themselves with appearing to humans "just because" or for no good reason. This is another good reason to humble ourselves and err on the side of caution if ever confronted with any spiritual being...

My priest says to be skeptical of any apparitions or appearances. If God wants you to hear a message He will give it again and again, but God won't admonish you for not trusting something like that.

As far as I know, the church has always accepted the idea of ghosts, that souls can be “stuck”, as we might say, before moving onto the Particular Judgment. There are countless historical accounts in Orthodox Catholic countries affirming this. Although not Orthodox, Traditional Catholic author Charles Coulombe has said the exact same thing when this subject was broached on his “Off the Menu” podcast, regarding the Latin church’s experience. It is incredibly common, it’s just that people today, even among those within the church, are extremely uncomfortable dealing with it. They would rather not have to face this issue. The case with the loud shrieks at midnight is a perfect example that souls stuck in this state are in need of prayer.

Ok, I need to stop for a moment before I continue watching and put my two cents in: I knew somebody, years ago, this man knew a guy, who's mom passed away. This guy who's mom died, well, he was in his dead mom's room, supposedly saw her, "ghost" telling him she would watch over him. Well, it wasn't her ghost, it was a devil impersonating her. This man almost opened the door to devils. As a Professed Orthodox Christian, if you take the, "it's a ghost" position, you will open the door to devils. That's something critical to think about!!

I never met this man, I only knew about his experience through somebody else I knew. Whatever happened, he knew from that experience, this wasn't his dead mom. Same is true, people playing with witch boards, trying to contact the dead. Isn't Orthodoxy against playing with witch boards? Please tell me our Orthodox Faith is against that stuff!!

@@OrthodoxChristianTheology , considering I'm Still Exploring my Way Around Orthodoxy, I don't want to find out there are Professed Orthodox Christians playing w tarot cards, witch boards, consulting psychics, talking to dead people, like Todd Bentley's devil possessed wife. One woman who goes to Saint Basil's Orthodox Church in Virginia, she came out of the new age into Orthodoxy, but here's the big problem, I don't believe her conversion story for a minute. What's she doing coming out of the Baptismal Font and reading omens? Take her conversion story, put it along side of testimonies from people in the charismatic movement, and your cannot tell the difference. They sound exactly the same. I don't mean to be harsh, but I came out of the charismatic movement. Saint Basil's in Virginia has an imposter, and she's going to lead everybody who Goes There astray. I am predicting that.

"Saint Gildas the Wise wrote in his De Exidio Brittanniae that Christianity came to Britain in the the year 37 A.D. The Orthodox Church credits Saint Aristobulus, with introducing the faith there in AD 42 and Eusebius and Hippolytus both name him as being one of the Seventy. Hippolytus in AD 160 writing in the Martyrologies of the Greek Church stated that Saint Aristobulus preached the Gospel in Britain. Saint Dorotheus of Tyre wrote in 303 AD that Aristobulus was sent to Britain in AD 37 as Bishop from Tyre. The Orthodox Church regards him as the first Bishop of Britain and honours him as the Saint of the British Isles. His feast day is on March the 16th and October 31st." There’s plenty of ghost and demon evidence captured on film. Tons of clips of objects being moved or thrown (specifically demon) as well as mists, shadows, orbs, faces, and partial apparitions (which are typically, though not always ghosts). I’m sure some might be fake or involve some kind of other potential explanation but plenty are very real.

As a born Orthodox I never heard that Ghosts are Demons... Never heard ghost stories either, apart from normal person passed away and soul was there sometimes even after the period of 40 days But it could be matter of language too, we call it soul (Holy Soul not Holy Ghost too), and the Ghost is used in a bad sense only, the spooky kind, and that is associated with the demonic, the ghosts are associated with demonic So maybe that's the reason some calling ghosts demonic and some 50/50 - because of English usage being different from how other Orthodox understand it? (I know that Ghost term is bad type only in more than 1 Orthodox language/culture and for the good / neutral type word Soul is used) Ah Holy Spirit is second term in English, and spirit doesn't seem to be the bad type of word unlike ghost It's a bit strange to be honest what are differences between Ghost, Spirit and Soul in English
