Australia has many tales of horror and mystery, along with some of these stories, are ghosts that accompany them.
Here are a few of the scariest ghost stories in Australia's history.
Episode 3
- The Ghosts of Hanging Rock
Joan Lindsay an Australian novelist wrote a book in 1967 called 'Picnic At Hanging Rock', It did very well, so well in fact it produced a movie as well as a Television Mini Series.
But the question on everyone's lips was, Was it a real story??
To this day no one really knows, It is also believed that Joan herself did not know.
The story if you have not heard it, began with a group of teenage schoolgirls accompanied by a few teachers, have a picnic at Hanging Rock on Valentines Day of the year 1900. Hanging Rock located an hour's drive northwest of Melbourne.
It was a scorching hot day and as many girls remained with the teachers at the picnic site, a few wandered off toward the Rock and were never seen of again.
This caused distress in the community and despite their search efforts, were unsuccessful in locating the missing girls.
It is believed Joan had psychic abilities and stated she had a vision of Nuns running with their clothing burnt and charred close by to the area, later finding out there had been a local convent that burnt down.
As Joan was elderly by the time the movie was made, she could not say whether she based the book on truth. She even went through moments where she believed the leading actress Anne, who played Miranda, was actually Miranda and was overcome emotionally when she met her.
Many psychics and mediums have visited the site with mixed results, some claim children lure them to the caves, Others claim it is a very spiritual place and A few Aboriginal men who visited from Northern territory did not make it all the way up, leaving immediately, stating only that 'it was an Evil place...'
No one can say for certain why this location is so haunted or paranormal, but it definitely makes for one great story and most likely a visit in the not-too-distant future...

I visited Hanging Rock briefly in 1985 having read the book, the sequel book and watched the film repeatedly. I didn’t have the opportunity to climb the rock itself. What I did get a sense of was probably infrasound creating an unusual atmosphere
