Ghosts of Taos

Taos, New Mexico USA is said to be haunted by many spirits that have accumulated over a very long and colorful history, many tied to historical figures, cautionary legends, ancient sites, and well remembered tragedies. Whether one believes in this sort of thing or not, these tales have become part of the rich culture and traditions associated with this vivid place in America's Southwest. I was driving into Taos with my kids once a few years ago. My son and I saw a man walking down the road headed out of town. It’s making the hair raise on every inch of my body thinking about what his face looked like. It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. There’s no way to describe it.

I live in Taos, on land with petroglyphs and artifacts that indicate that it's been inhabited for many, many hundreds of years. In the back room we store the artifacts we discovered when digging our foundation. It's in that back room that I often get a very eerie feeling, and I've seen a short squat shadow figure three times now. I get the impression that I'm seeing an ancient female spirit, and while I'm not scared of her, I do get a startle every time I see her.

You need to return the artifacts you have discovered to the Taos Pueblo. They do not belong to you. This is very important.

Also, the town of Taos has a huge tunnel system running underneath it, cinstructed in colonial times to escape Native attacks. Even today you can go to several of the shops around the plaza and enter their basements to find an entrance to the tunnels. I've only peered inside a short distance, but they are CREEPY! And they're supposed to be quite extensive. I saw support posts being propped up by rocks and many other things that make me wonder how safe it is down there. Plus, spiders..eww...
