Good history! I've visited the Martinez Hacienda. Loved it. My father was born in Taos. I'm a Martinez. I'm a Martin and have traced back to Hernan Martin-Serrano. He's my 11x great grandfather and Padre Martinez my 2nd cousin 7x removed. A lot of us out there!

Great history. I am also from the Martin Serrano clan but have never lived in NM. I know some of the Martin family lived on the Villalpando estate with other related family groups in 1760 when the Comanche raid occurred. My Torres family was there as well. Do you have information about this event? Much of my family was massacred at that time. My 4th great grandfather was Manuel, son of Pascuala Martin who was captured at that time according to her father Antonio Martin. Any info would be great.

Where is the Hacienda in Taos?

It's in a part of Taos called Ranchitos. I remember going on "in town field trips" while in elementary, to the Martinez Hacienda.

My mom's side of our family are Martinez from Talpa, and our grandma's family on our dad's side are from Des Montes. All from the Taos area. We're Pacheco from Arroyo Seco.

Awesome! John.. Do you have a tree on Ancestry or on FamilySearch? My GG grandmother's surname was Garcia & she was born in Taos.. but when I work the tree far enough back, I run into a LOT of Martin Serrano's also. Until I saw Rob's video explaining the surname, I thought maybe I had written the name down wrong. Mostly because I haven't added all the documents there are for a lot of them yet. I'll get to it soon. xoxo

@@bearpawz_, nice to hear from someone who has an interest. Yes, on Ancestry ,I have a tree and I think it's right on. It's my understanding that I am from Garcia of Noriega. My father was Juan Jose Garcia, his father was Adelaido Garcia, his father was Manuel Garcia and his father was Guadalupe (??). Blas Martin Serrano was my 6th great-grandparents. I was named after my grandfather, Adelaido which is rare. That's what I have but in any given time it might change.

@@johnagarcia1656 Hey John! I tried to find Adelaido on Ancestry & found one who filled out WWI forms @ age 42. What an awesome name that is btw! The one I found shows a son Juan (& other kids) & his dad is listed as Manuel. People on Ancestry are all over the place with the spelling of Adelaido's name! 😆 Not sure if I found the right one, but if I did, he was married @ 18, then again much later in life. My 2nd G-Grandma was born in Taos & she married my 2 GGF who showed up there from Kentucky with a CA Civil War unit. Her dad's name was Estevan de la Cruz Garcia de Noreiga. There is only one Martin Serrano family, now known as Martinez in New Mexico. Founded in 1598 by Hernan Martin Serrano from Zacatecas, Mexico. This family grew quite large in the 1600s and by the 1800s was possibly the most common Hispano surname in New Mexico.

I’ve always wondered where the original Martin came from. My whole family is Martinez from Tierra Amarillo. My grandma Ann Anita Martinez daughter of Enoch Martinez received a deed. I did my ancestry and kept going back. I did see where it was “Martin”. Thank you for your explanation. We may be family? Lol I love your videos.

Hola Primo! I've been building my family tree and the Martin/Serrano branch is also part of my lineage. My paternal ancestors were among the first Conquistadors in the new world. I'm proud to be a Martinez!

Los apellidos españoles patronimicos derivan de nombres propios, buen de antiguo origen godo, celta o romano ( latin)...así, Martín más el sufijo ez, quiere decir hijo de Martín. Rodrigo es Rodríguez, Jiméno es Jiménez, López { de Lupo o lobo) es López o Lupiañez, de Sancho es Sánchez. De Pero o Pedro es Pérez........etc..

My great grandfather was T.P. Martinez from Taos. My grandfather was Tomas Martinez and Grandmother Sarah Maestas Martinez. My mothers name was Virginia Martinez before she married my father, she was born in Taos. We are probably distant relatives, Rob.
