Someone probably pointed this out already, but Jay's identity as a tomboy (and her being proud of it, as it is stated in her character profile) plays a really interesting role in Lacey's grieving process. When the façade fades and all is left for Lacey to see is her friend's dead, rotting body she doesn't just point out her unwillingness to "stand still" and cooperate, but also her lack of femininity: if she acted like a "proper girl", being more meek and vain, her death could've been avoided (she fell to her death because she was too reckless on her skateboard, after all). Jay's death not only tears Lacey apart, but also reinforces her ideas about girlhood -- hence why she tries to "fix" Jay by putting makeup on her face, effectively disregarding the wishes of her dead friend by trying to save her from the worst sin a girl can ever commit: be hideous, and thus unlovable. This is probably my favorite episode yet, and I can't wait to see what this series has in store for the future. Incredible stuff!

As a child i played a lot of girl games, including ones about makeup, and the eyes of the girls were ALWAYS open. I only remember one Barbie PC game where the characters close their eyes when you apply eyeshadow on them. But in every other makeup game characters kept their eyes open. She made her decision and her finger met the button without any ceremony. but looking down at her feet it was all red with blood . she stood in shock. The blood tainted her very being. @@ghostgirl7089 Jay was apparently criticized by parents who thought she was a bad influence on their daughters for being "not feminine" enough. If you take one look at Rocio, you might realize she's not exactly a "girly girl," so she may have also gotten comments like that throughout her life. Society often pushes girls to act and look a certain way, and perceive girls who don't meet these expectations as lesser. I believe what Rocio did to Jay was a reflection of how she felt society treated girls like her who just wanted to be themselves, and were met with scorn for it.
@midnalazuli7937 ай бұрын
One thing that always stood out to me about Rocio appearance-wise was how she has the exact same Raccoon-style braid as Jay does. This makes me believe that Rocio resonated with Jay a lot, since if you take one look at her, you'll realize right away that she isn't exactly a "girly girl." So when those entitled mothers complained that Jay was a bad influence on their daughters for being a tomboy, and demanded that she be removed from the website, Rocio took it very personally, because she probably got comments like that all her life about how women "should" and "shouldn't" act. Having said that, I believe the reason she killed Jay off in such a brutal fashion is because she wanted to teach those mothers a lesson on how she thought society treated girls like her who were belittled just for being themselves.

personally, I don't think that Jay's death was due to "not being femme enough" but rather Lacey was trying to grasp at any straws in the grieving process. @@Solinaru Yes, she didn't literally die from not wearing makeup, but I'm talking about Rocio's decision to delete her rather than her in-universe death. Each installment of this series has a greater theme regarding problems that women/girls often have to deal with (stalking, SA, just to name a few). In this case, the video is probably dealing with society's toxic expectations of femininity, and the fact that those complaints lead to Jay's deletion definitely portrays such a message. What I'm saying is, the reason that Lacey is so focused on feminizing her is meant to be deeper than just the fact that she died through a tomboyish sport. Of course it explores grief and loss as well (hence the stages of grief popping up in the chaotic sequence at the end), but that's more of something within the game's universe, albeit potentially based on Rocio's own experiences.
@Astr01__7 ай бұрын
so here's what i understood from the video Rocio had been getting complaints about Jay not being 'girly' enough, so as parents didn't like her she was killed off (which also explains the ending of her minigame where she dies). Lacey still can't accept her death, so she tries to fix her by doing her makeup to make her more femenine (which is also the reason she was deleted/killed off), however Lacey then realizes that theres really no way of going back to save her and that there's nothing she can do, after this, she composes a goodbye song for her where she explains how she wanted the people who made Jay get deleted to die ( "for everyone to bleed from their mouths and their eyes" "I wished for all beauty to die" ). However Grace does mention that Jay later appears in other games even after her death, so maybe they're Lacey's hallucinations due to her troubles with grieving, hinting that Lacey never really got over Jay's death

An interesting point about Lacey's attitude towards femininity is how this series presents men. The _only_ male characters we see are monsters (the uncle and the stalker) or complete jerks like the pet shop/diner customers, who are still shown to be "scary" in their own way. The entire website is bright pink. Lacey's interests are all girly. She only seems happy (or at least peaceful) when she's alone with her hobbies or with her friends. Yeah, Lacey's Wardrobe mentioned going on a date with a cute guy, but imo that was supposed to be twisted foreshadowing about the stalker. She spends the whole game _dreading_ it. Lacey seems to fear men and masculinity due to the abuse she's suffered which could explain why she blames it for Jay's death. It could also be a defense mechanism she learned from her uncle, like, "if I'm pretty and quiet he'll be nicer to me" and she wants Jay to be more feminine so she's "safe."

Girls who dont adhere to those roles (and boys as well, but this series is specifically about the horrors of girlhood) are shunned and even hurt for it. From Lacey who has been pushed into this role of stereotypical girlhood as her safety net she believes that if Jay had just gone along with how everyone else was she wouldnt have died. While this is a dramatized version of it this is a lot like how most women i know do have internalized misogyny, including myself in the past. Its safer and more acceptable to adhere to certain roles and expectations since people who step out of the box end up like this (again, generally an exaggerated scenario). So its less that Lacey wanted her friend to be more feminine but moreso that Lacey has been instilled with the belief pushed on so many girls that its safer for them to adhere to whats expected of them. Its a projection of Laceys own fears when it comes to not being feminine or beautiful, as vanity is something instilled into girls from such a young age and I know so many people who even subconciously have the mindset that its not worth living if youre not beautiful.

And the more you wanna look away, the more you crave watching it all unfold. Not because you're scared, because of how uncomfortable yet saddened you are for the characters.

It's genuinely kind of upsetting how Rocio's old friend is so dismissive of her behavior. "She was such a weirdo, she was cuckoo" she was a deeply traumatized person that didn't know how to deal with it, and the second her trauma started to resurface, her "friend" abandoned her. And that's what's continued her downward spiral

I think I'm going nuts, but please let me cook. Lacey has always had these two hairclips in hair that resemble the roman number twelve (XII). This same number can also be seen from a version of Lacey in 16:14, where one of her hairclips a X shape, and the other side is two II shapes. So, I decided "Hmm that look familiar, I wonder what tarot card this is?" and it turns out that 12th card is the Hanged man. So as bad as it is for a character who has died the last three videos, the meanings behind it are "Surrender, Letting go and Self-sacrifice". I know that wasn't the first person to find out, just wanted to show what I found.

I mean, that's what a lot of the games have been about. It seems so simple to just serve the food in under 3 minutes, in Lacey's Petshop, the key is in the cage she is locked in. But for whatever reason she cannot do these things. Is she to blame? I don't believe whatever real-world equivalent to Jay actually died, I think she left after parents complained that Jay, the representation of her on the website, wasn't appropriate for a kid's game, likely to her being a skater and liking masculine things. I think Lacey saying that Jay needs "fixing" or to be "more feminine" over her corpse represents this pretty well. Jay was taken away from Lacey to reasons beyond her control, and so she tries to bring her back by "fixing" her problems, making her body "beautiful", though she is long gone, she was killed when her self was taken, when she wasn't allowed to be herself. And so, Rocio, represented in game as Lacey, shows the visitors to the site the "real girls' games", the reality of what happened.

This series really means a lot to me as a grooming and CSA survivor who has OCD and constant awful thoughts about what happened and in general a shattered mind constantly feeling dirty and like I'm seeing bugs scurrying out the corner of my eye or on my body (or freaking out when I see one that's actually real due to not expecting it, making all of the hallucinations worse for some time since they all "have just as much of a chance to be real") People never talk about it and survivors almost never get to tell stories about it in Hollywood or other big productions, so seeing a small heartfelt indie project by a girl who similarly went through too much too early resonated with me and made me keep on going with my art projects I want to make despite many life hurdles, especially with it wholeheartedly embracing the 'cringy' deviantart anime artstyle from 20 years ago (that wasn't actually that bad and was often just maligned for being something young girls were into) to gutwrenching effect once you get the implication the story is hinting to with what's up with her

This series really speaks to me. I find a lot of comfort in weird, surreal, and strange media, often containing some kind of horror or childhood trauma. I didn’t really understand why until I watched the pet shop video when it came out. My trauma isn’t the same as Lacey’s, I wasn’t SA’d, but I was exposed to adult and NSFW content as early as 9 years old, and met hung out with kids older than me (like, pre-teen to 15 or so) online while I was 10. So many hateful things. I didn’t get out of toxic spaces until I was 14. I always thought of the things I experienced as silly or not serious because they happened through youtube, minecraft, and minecraft-related apps. But yeah. Lacey’s flash games made me realize that maybe I was actually pretty damaged by the things I went through. Thank you for making something that helped me realize that.

I absolutely absolutely love the underlying criticism here of the idea of makeup in general - smearing it on dead bodies in the mortuary to make them "pretty". Putting it on yourself to mask grief if it's ugly. The flashing "smile for me girl" and "vanity doesn't die" and "if only you wore some makeup" and the fact that jay disregarding it was enough for a poster to say she's not a role model appropriate for little girls - enforcing the idea that makeup is praxis for little girls! The fact that beauty seemsto come above all else, even personality, even grief, even death. I love the commentary made here.
@Elli-kc2yhАй бұрын
While the commentary you made is correct (girls being expected to wear makeup when they dont want to is bad and using makeup to cover up emotions is unhealthy) imma play devils advocate for a sec. They basically have to put makeup on most dead bodies. Not makeup like how lacey did it (more girly) but to make the person look less...dead. If a person has an open casket funeral, makeup is pretty much a requirement bc decomposing bodies, even just a few days after death, look hella creepy. Its better for the funeral attendees to see their friend/family member looking more asleep than dead for the last time.

I didn't understand at first that why Lacey vomits is not only because of the pressure and stress, it's because a lot of maggots started to come out from Jay's Eyes... Also, the symbolisms, in both makeup scenes with Jay, Lacey just uses pink, pink liner, pink eyeshadow, pink lipstick (more like pinkish red) because it's worldwide known that Pink represents Feminity... And I don't know if I'm just theorysing too much, But I think Grace likes Maisie because it was meant to be based after her, with that puffy hair colored pink (because Grace, If I remember correctly, has reddish hair, so to make it more appealing and cute, they made it Pink), and I don't know if Rocío originaly made Jay to look like her, because if you see closely, Rocío has a stripped hairlock and by how she's dressing in the photo, she looked like she wears a lot of "Tomboy'sh" clothing, so maybe Jay was based off from her, so it makes more horrible that she killed her because of the parents saying she's a bad influence, she took it too personal (and also was a stupid thing for the parents to get mad at) and when that happend, she started to tell a bit of her story through Lacey, because the character that represented her the most, was killed

Theory: While Jay was skateboarding on the buildings she accidentally fell to her death. After hearing of the death of her friend Lacey did not want to accept it so she went to the morgue to find Skater Jay and put makeup on her to make it feel like she was still alive however Jay's body was starting to decay. leading to Lacey starting face the reality that her friend is gone. So she then wrote a goodbye song in memory for Jay. Edit: I heard it there was more too it than that, Jay's character was receiving backlash from parents due to thinking that her tomboyish behavior was a bad influence on girls so the creator of the Lacey games got rid of Jay by killing her off in a disturbing way in the game to get back at the parents and Lacey thought if she made Jay look more feminine then she could be brought back.

Please never stop making things. You are endlessly creative, you have made a series that explores the horror of femininity so well, and you did it using flash games from the 2000's as a central thematic pillar. If Laceygames had been a one-off, or even just a few videos, it would have already been great, but the way you developed the series is spectacular. You don't *owe* an audience anything, but it would be a damn shame if you didn't continue. 3:43 Lacey being described as "determined and had lots of friends" makes me :( It implies that she's eager to meet new people but she couldn't keep her friendships because of how erratic her behavior is. All she has left is Grace and (maybe idk if she's only a friend of a friend) Charlie, and even then, i think they're distancing themselves from her... It's such a shame, because by the look of her website, it seems like she worked extremely hard on it along with her buddies. Also the description of her being an airhead reminded me of the scene from the Lacey's Petshop video where she described her vulnerable moment as her being "edgy". Time and time again she tries so hard to feel like a normal, average, cute girl, but ultimately breaks down because she can't take everything anymore. It's a small but significant detail that hits just a little hard for me honestly

She calls her weird and a freak and stuff, and it feels very... personal. I'm starting to think maybe Rocio had a crush on her, or was just a lesbian or smthn not even relating to Grace, and Grace Did Not Like That and that's where she started to pull away from Rocio. I wanted to say that I recognized a very specific fear I didn't realize I wanted to share with others in this video. From 16-19 I did work in a family owned funeral home. Particularly working with body retrieval and aiding in preparation of the body for the funeral home. I did this in a tiny county for long enough to learn this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. But I experienced a similar visceral world shattering horror, when a kid that I graduated with, who I was friends with, was on my prep table. It was how I found out he died. And I had to pretend that it was normal. It was the first death I handled of someone in my age range. But I'm glad I got the experience. The years I spent there solidified my love for the work and I intend to be a mortician for the rest of my life.

I think I can understand at least a little of what happened near the end, after Jay died while riding her skateboard. Lacey was so heartbroken after her friend's death, she tried to fix her by putting makeup on her dead body. And the last screen shot is Macy comforting Lacey after their friend Jay's death. I have to say I think it is not only disgusting and disturbing, but also sad too. Because Lacey lost one of her closet and dearest friends and was so deeply in denial over her death that she tried to fix her with the only thing she could think of which fixes her when she feels really down and ugly. By putting make up on.
@midnalazuli7937 ай бұрын
There's a few subliminal images that when paused at the right time, reveal the reason for Jay's death. Parents complained that Jay was a bad influence in their daughters because she wasn't "feminine" enough. I believe this is why Lacey is seen trying to put makeup on her corpse during the makeup parlor segment, because during her mental breakdown, she convinces herself that she can bring Jay back if she makes her appear "more feminine." It is really gut-wrenching to watch, since you really get a feel for just how close Lacey and Jay were, and how deeply Lacey had been impacted by her death, which is somethin I think Rocio really wanted to convey with those parents who saw Jay as being problematic for something as silly as being a tomboy.
@karenramey24087 ай бұрын
@@midnalazuli793 I didn't think of it like that, but I can see your point. And yes it is heartbreaking to see how upset Lacey was after Jay died. If I remember correctly, I think it was stated that Jay and Massie was Lacey's best friends.

I honestly really hated the way Grace treated Charlie. Like, in some respects, I can understand why she'd be mad at her, because she lied about keeping their previous interview private. But Grace was so dismissive and careless throughout the whole video, and seemed like she didn't even want to be there. She was also acting like Charlie was weird for being concerned with Rocio's wellbeing, even though Grace actually knew Rocio personally, and didn't care about her wellbeing at all. Not to mention, it was kind of messed up of Grace to expose Charlie to the Jay stuff specifically because Charlie had mentioned Jay was her favorite character... like, she didn't think that it might've been a little traumatizing to make Charlie watch her favorite go through all that suffering?

I always love the theming of these videos. The first video is a straight-forward look into the horrors of being stalked, the second is the struggles of adult life after trauma and how you want to lash out at everyone, the third deals with the rage your trauma brings you and how you don't know where to go after a storm. This isn't the main theme of the video, but there seems to be an underlying tone of internalized misogyny mixing in with Lacey's grief. I mean, it can't be a coincidence she told the tomboy character that she should've been wearing and doing make-up instead of "boyish", dangerous things such as skating on buildings.
@midnalazuli7936 ай бұрын
I think you're misinterpreting Lacey's mindset. She didn't blame Jay's death on her own masculinity. Jay's death was a result of entitled mothers who complained that Jay was a bad influence on their daughters for being a tomboy, and therefore, "not feminine enough" for a site aimed at girls. They emailed Rocio and demanded she be removed from the site, so Rocio killed Jay off to spite them. There's a single frame during the goodbye song that shows the morgue version of Lacey attacking the makeup parlor version of Lacey, which I believe is meant to represent Lacey taking revenge on toxic femininity for being the thing that caused her friend's death.

I know, right? In my opinion, that was the saddest moment in the whole series. You can really feel Lacey's pain and just how much Jay's death affected her. And considering Lacey is heavily implied to be Rocio's insert, despite being the one responsible for Jay's demise, it probably really hurt Rocio to do what she did to Jay.
@Anonymous-737 ай бұрын
So from what I can tell the lore is as follows: Rocio was forced to live with her Uncle for whatever reason (her parents either died or couldn’t take care of her) who abused and neglected her for years. We see 2 major events unfold, the first being a date that was set up by her uncle with someone who was stalking Rocio (which he may or may not have had any knowledge of but he probably wouldn’t care) leading to her being abused even more in a toxic “relationship” that “ate her up inside” hence what the stalker said at the end of the first video, the second event being the the final straw for Rocio in which her Uncle killed her beloved dog. After that, Rocio murdered her Uncle and possibly other people who he knew and went in the run. From here it’s a bit unclear of what happens, as of now. Going off of the Cafe video I theorized she might’ve gotten a job in the food service at a local restaurant to keep her going, but couldn’t perform properly in it and eventually it got closed down due to health violations (which may or may not have been her fault) and perhaps a mortician before she eventually met Grace. She and Grace became quick friends and found interest in making flash games for girls. Again, it’s a bit unclear at the moment, but here’s what I believe may have happened between Grace and Rocio that made them slowly divide. 1. Grace was a Religious or otherwise homophobic girl, but Rocio had feelings for her. When she confessed to Grace, she was disgusted and things went downhill from there. 2.Their friendship was toxic from the very beginning, but got worse when they made the website due to different visions on what it should be. Either way, their friendship tanked which drive Rocio to her breaking point, to where she found it difficult to separate fiction and reality. Which is where the new characters come into play. There are again a few (mostly one) theories I have that relate to Jay and Masie 1. They’re based off of real people Rocio knew, meaning Jay was a real person (or imaginary friend?) who died before she met Grace. 2. The 2 represent the ideal lives or friends Rocio wished to have. 3. Is more likely for me. Jay and Masie represent Rocio’s vision of a “better girl” than her. The first being Masie, who is a typical girl, with Jay being a more rebellious type who acts more like a teenage boy. When Rocio receives concerned comments about Jay however, her view completely shifts towards the former ideology, so she kills her off. Rocio finds comfort in this world of hers, so much so she becomes obsessed with the website, which concerns Grace even further until she leaves Rocio behind. Eventually, she finds a way to hardwire herself into her own creations, to “become” Lacey. So she goes through with it, hoping it’ll all be fine. But all is not well, her trauma follows her and even manifests in the world around her, marking her go through it again, and again, and again. Or in her words, The next day, and the next day, and the next day.

I don’t think Rocio had a crush on Grace, I just don’t see any implications for that. Rather, it’s possible Grace wasn’t equipped to deal with Rocio’s trauma and the way it manifested in their relationships so she began to distance herself from her and dismiss her as crazy and cuckoo. I also don’t think the parents complaining about Jay resulted in Rocio shifting her internal ideology, there’s a message posted by Rocio under a forum full of concerned parents complaining about the masculinity of Jay where she says “careful what you wish for ;-)” to me this implies that she killed Jay off in order to spite those parents, to say “look at what your stupid standards did to your children and Jay.” This could also explain why Jay appeared in almost every game after her death, as brought up by Grace Lastly, I don’t think Rocio actually wired herself into the internet to “become” Lacey, which is honestly mainly because it sort of ruins the immersion for me. “woOOAh Lacey was the ghost of Rocio the whole timeeee!” is a trope I don’t wanna see much more 😭 that’s why I prefer to think of Rocio tangled up in the wires as being a representation of how tethered she was to her creation, how not only connected was it with she but also how obsessed she was with it

Why would Jay be based on a real person or imaginary friend?
@HYP3RFiiX86 ай бұрын
The Lacey’s goodbye song really hit home for me. When you lose a loved one, you want the world to stop. For everyone to see and understand that a significant person who meant so much in your world will never come around again. You want people to stop and mourn, to empathize and cry, you just want everyone to know such a special person is gone forever. But that doesn’t happen, it will never happen. The world keeps going, as if nobody cares. It's frustrating to realize you cant just stop time, you need to continue on too. You start to question why this is happening and what you can do but the more you question everything, the worse things get. It's unfair to see these bright sunny days because you could be spending them with your loved one, but instead you are cooped inside your dark room with the urge to scream and cry, begging for the grief to subside so you can function normally again. But it doesn't, you just have to mask it for the next day, and the next, and the next, and the next. You captured the vicious cycle and the gripping pain of grief and its stages so accurately. Everyone knows and understands the concept, but experiencing it is cruel and ugly. Wonderful work as always, this series holds so much value in my heart for how real and scary the themes explored are for the traumatized individuals.

In the screenshot she responds to the questionable comments with "be careful what you ask for ;)" and with her making Lacey say stuff like "If you were just more feminine" and slapping makeup on the corpse, it was Rocio's way of getting back at those comments by finally 'making Jay feminine'. This is so well written!
