@@Cyber_Lanka I mean, there's artificial hype with everything nowadays, so it's not different from that situation. What's special about Cosmic Desktop that created all the hype about it? It's just Gnome with different accent colours. What's really the speed difference between all these terminals? Negligible, barely noticeable. Etc, etc. But some terminal may still have some feature, or the way its config works, that may make someone prefer one over another. I'm been using Kitty for a while now, but now installed Ghostty and like it just as much.

@@myartikool I'm on a low end (about 8 years old) laptop so any performance gain is nice to have. Ghostty launches slightly faster, renders text about twice as fast and scrolling (like in huge log files) is noticeably smoother than Kitty. These and extras were good enough for me to switch.

Not really. It can only case system wide issues if you actually updated system dependencies. If you know what you are doing, Sy is completely fine.
@leviathanmelvilli562
@leviathanmelvilli562 Ай бұрын
pacman -Sy does not update anything. it only refreshes the local package database.. that too if it has an older timestamp.. to force that you'll need to pass 2 `y`s.. what the initial comment must be is "don't tell people to use pacman -Su without the 'y' for update." and the worst case is never a broken system.. there are dependency requirements for every package which very clearly stop the update process and tell you to check the issues by first..
@rasix86
@rasix86 Ай бұрын
@@leviathanmelvilli562 This is not true. Many packages don't have dependencies on specific versions of a package. So if you install a package with -Sy it's possible that an application is installed that has all dependencies in place, but not a version that is needed. And depending on the packages involved this can indeed result in a broken system. I actually had this scenario with a readline update that was not installed because of missing -u. Yes in most cases these are packacking issues, but they are real nonetheless. Also this isn't even obvious in many cases, because it can be a dependency of a dependency that is is causing the problem. also "don't tell people to use pacman -Su without the 'y' for update." cannot do any harm, because the state of your pacman database has not changed. It's the opposite: This command can actually FIX issues. At the end of the day Arch Linux is very specific about this: Avoid doing partial upgrades. In other words, never run pacman -Sy; instead, always use pacman -Syu. "Partial upgrades are unsupported Arch Linux is a rolling release distribution. That means when new library versions are pushed to the repositories, the Developers and Package Maintainers rebuild all the packages in the repositories that need to be rebuilt against the libraries. For example, if two packages depend on the same library, upgrading only one package might also upgrade the library (as a dependency), which might then break the other package which depends on an older version of the library. That is why partial upgrades are not supported." - (Arch Wiki "System_maintenence" Chapter 3.2 and 3.3)

In my opinion, the title bar is too thick, would be more accepted if tabs fit within it. The title bar for Konsole with tabs is 26 pixels, where as Ghostty with tabs is 86 pixels. I lose 60 pixels of space for text if I use Ghostty. I would use Alacritty, but I want a more fully featured terminal with tab support (tmux won't cut as I use tmux within tabs and having tmux in tmux is a mess). Cosmic term title bar is 78 pixels, which while better than Ghostty, its not as good as Konsole. Maybe I should go terminal shopping, but for now, I'm sticking with Konsole.

There is literally nothing that improves daily workflow. For any normal human being 0.01s performance boost is unnoticable. Sometimes tty + tmux just enough. No need GPU accel bs. No wonder it use 800% of total memory. What r u doing in terminal? Play a game? Joke aside. GPU accel, resources hungry, multi threading terminal emulators is perfect definition of garbage in my book. It such a piece ... I'll stop now Even base st I feel like still doing to much. See the default keybinds, other than copy, paste, resize/reset font size, I never use anything else.

Can I make ghostty as the default shell in yakuake? That would be awesome!

I've been using it for week, giving kitty a rest. It is a fine terminal emulator.

Please, never use "pacman -Sy", this could lead to a partial update, which is not supported by Arch, and thus may break something in your system. Either use "-S" or "Syu". Never "Sy".

You can at least disable window decorations. Hyprland user sticking with foot for now, launch time sucks.

"It uses your GPU to accelerate the graphics rendering rate" Um yeah. That's what the GPU is for. Now I wonder how many applications don't use the GPU for the visual or graphical part. Imagine how many GUIs or python scripts that takes up performance just cause they didn't make it use the graphics cards by default for the graphics.

You can configure it to use GTK3 without libadwaita so it blends in nicely with Xfce4/Cinnamon/Mate.

@@PyVerse-47 It's impossible to make a native app on Linux because there's no one defined standard, dev explained it in his post. That's why he gave the option to disable GTK decorations.

One window of ghosty eats 6x more ram that urxvt in daemon mode, serving multiple windows 🤔 It's also the first time I've seen terminal in powertop, with 40 events/s, which is somehow more than idle firefox tab... Maybe 'speed' .neq. performance.
