Not really. It can only case system wide issues if you actually updated system dependencies. If you know what you are doing, Sy is completely fine.
@leviathanmelvilli562Ай бұрын
pacman -Sy does not update anything. it only refreshes the local package database.. that too if it has an older timestamp.. to force that you'll need to pass 2 `y`s.. what the initial comment must be is "don't tell people to use pacman -Su without the 'y' for update." and the worst case is never a broken system.. there are dependency requirements for every package which very clearly stop the update process and tell you to check the issues by first..
@rasix86Ай бұрын
@@leviathanmelvilli562 This is not true. Many packages don't have dependencies on specific versions of a package. So if you install a package with -Sy it's possible that an application is installed that has all dependencies in place, but not a version that is needed. And depending on the packages involved this can indeed result in a broken system. I actually had this scenario with a readline update that was not installed because of missing -u. Yes in most cases these are packacking issues, but they are real nonetheless. Also this isn't even obvious in many cases, because it can be a dependency of a dependency that is is causing the problem. also "don't tell people to use pacman -Su without the 'y' for update." cannot do any harm, because the state of your pacman database has not changed. It's the opposite: This command can actually FIX issues. At the end of the day Arch Linux is very specific about this: Avoid doing partial upgrades. In other words, never run pacman -Sy; instead, always use pacman -Syu. "Partial upgrades are unsupported Arch Linux is a rolling release distribution. That means when new library versions are pushed to the repositories, the Developers and Package Maintainers rebuild all the packages in the repositories that need to be rebuilt against the libraries. For example, if two packages depend on the same library, upgrading only one package might also upgrade the library (as a dependency), which might then break the other package which depends on an older version of the library. That is why partial upgrades are not supported." - (Arch Wiki "System_maintenence" Chapter 3.2 and 3.3)

I would use Alacritty, but I want a more fully featured terminal with tab support (tmux won't cut as I use tmux within tabs and having tmux in tmux is a mess).
