Anything that has to do with a computer is hype, and really useless: speaking as a 25+ yr Xenix/Unix/AIX/linux sys admin. No AI will replace food, family, work satisfaction. AI has it's place to just build a better entertainment system.

This is a mature discussion about AI rather than one designed to turn it into the latest bubble/burst which could bring so much misery to do many 🤔

I've been programming in mainly Python and scripting languages for many years. I've heard all the HYPE over the generative AI for code and wanted to test it. Before trying Copilot I've tried chatGPT (3.5 and 4o) and several others like Gemini (dec 2024), and Claude(dec 2024). I created a fairly specific prompt for a python script that would actually do something useful and used this as the benchmark prompt. I pasted this into each chatbot and evaluated the resulting code. I was shocked at how BAD these performed. Of the ones that provided a complete answer, the results were all over the map and every single chatbot PRODUCED FLAWED BUGGY CODE. For some the imports were incorrect, others it was such bad code that it was almost unusable after fixing the code so it would at least run. A talented High School age developer could produce better code. Working on my current python project that uses PyQt6.8 I ran into a difficult problem and I though I'd give Copilot a try so I installed the extension as Nik has shown and did some RTFM to understand how to use it. and then added several py files to the chat panel and asked my question. The suggestions/code provided either outright didn't work or caused working code to no longer work. I told the Copilot "This causes working code to stop working and does not accomplish the objectives I described in my initial question. Is there a better way to do this". After thinking about it for about 30 seconds it came back with a PyQt5 reply that was very nearly what the previous reply was with the exception of some of the code was now in its own function. So to make a long story shorter, I went round and round with Copilot (gpt4o) it giving me the exact same answer even though I told it "THIS DOES NOT WORK". Maybe if you are just learning python or your company doesn't care about code quality that Copilot or one of the other Generative AI chatbots would be helpful. But from my experience with them for the last couple months, they generate crap code. if the LLMs are based of existing code bases what does that say about us? Using vscode and web in case you are interested.

I've not used Facebook in almost a decade. I haven't noticed any changes in my life other than defeating depression, buying a house, getting married, and having my first child. Sometimes I wonder if giving up Facebook was worth it.... /s

I find it borderline criminal that virtually all large companies and websites use linux to run servers and data center with the benefits of open source software. But refuse to offer the customer the choice to use it because they cant bear to lose even a smidgee of control

On line Censorship is now so widespread and so ubiquitous that this should come as no surprise. However it needs to be taken in the context of recent release of the latest open source resource DeepSeek, (which has hurt the mainstream commercial service providers,) so they're now pretty keen to deny their user information or access to them. But since I've never ever used Facebook anyway this isn't a problem for me.
