The Kim Carnes version is a cover too. Jackie Del Shannon wrote it in 1974 as a jazz song which is largely forgettable. Kim Carnes was the one that mate it a timeless classic. I don't mind Brendon's version either

I've never clicked a video so fast. The first time I heard Kim Carnes singing this it was probs seven years ago, I was in the car with me Gran waiting for Dad at the gas station while on a two hour drive to the city. The intro was playing so softly I had to strain when that raspy voice came crooning out, I've listened to it a couple hundred times since. I associate it with my first conscious intro to the 80's, a musical decade I've come to love. So when I see my guy Brandon covering this I ... it just made me happy :)

The Kim Carnes version was not the original. That was Jackie DeShannon. Kim Carnes guitarist did change the chord progression to the iconic IV vi V progression we all love, though.
