Scelsi was one of the great avant-garde of the 60s, and this is a beautifully clear performance.

This is the dimostration that there can be an infinite universe in one singol note. Absolutely wonderful!

how is this a "demonstration" of an infinite universe in one single note? There are many, many more than just one single note being played! YES, it is wonderful, but please, revise your statement.

The quite peculiar extatic vision of Scelsi is splendidly rendered here.

What incredible sonorities, the nearest an orchestra can get to sounding like Robert Roach's Magnificent void.

Microtonal structures separated only by a very fine ear, or a few psychedelics. Makes me wonder if Christopher Keene drew inspiration from Giacinto.

I am quite certain these are not the mental images Scelsi had in mind at all. This is music of meditation, contemplation and, ultimately, transcendence; there is nothing violent or horrific about it, quite to the contrary.

Is Scelsi who inspired Ligeti or the reverse?

It is quite difficult to say. Actually, probably there was no influence at all. They lived in two closed worlds - especially Scelsi, who needed transcrpitors to write down scores from magnetic tapes that he generated with his 'ondoline', an electronic instrument generating micro-intervals, forerunner of 'Ondes Martenot'. Scelsi was almost unknown. It is the french composer Tristan Murail, who met him at Villa Medicis in Rome, who did his best to make him btter known by a 'happy few' circle. His ouatstanding ‘Quattro pezzi su una nota sola’was written at the same time than Ligeti's ‘Atmosphères’ . Did Ligeti know Scelsi at that critical time in his own creative process? I am pretty sure that he didn't.

Heureusement, d'ailleurs".

@@mrtchaikovsky I was very disillusioned at a young age when i saw that you could in fact not say that about all artists. A classic discipline comes from the master/apprentice. One learns to start with a foundation and be calculated. That is, to know what you want before you create it and know how you are going to execute things at every level. Not all artists are mad/ geniuses suffering under the weight of their high standards.
