Giacomo Favretto was born in 1849 in Italy, to a rather humble family, but his talent from an early age showed he was not to remain in hard times. His talent was recognized early and by 15 years old he was already in training as an artist to be. His love of Venice where he grew up never left him and he absorbed the painters of earlier years like Tiepolo and even Rembrandt (from Etchings) and prospered. His life was brief but the flame and incredible output is remarkable by any standard. His legacy has been secured.

Thank you for introducing me to Favretto's work. I never heard of him before but should've. His work comes alive and off of the canvas.

This is my first introduction to Favretto. He is stunning in his breath of color and pictorial arrangement. His brilliant use of informality draws you in. You become apart of the scene. I have been a painter over fifty years. Studies the great masters of antiquity and have never come across his name. His mastery of texture and execution are amazing. His understanding of the Golden patio screams to everyone familiar with this technique. Nothing short of brilliant.

Favretto's works have such life that I can hear the crowds and even smells the scents.

WOW! Never heard of him until now ... the richness in color, the details, the gestures, the body language, the use of light: a master comes to life through his paintings. Thank you for sharing your love of art to the worldwide public here. Marvelous painter!

Thank you so much for this glimpse at Favretto, wonderful everyday life and true relaxed mastery. First time I've heard of him and lived an hour from Venice for over 20 years and have been many many times to the now tourist invaded amusement park, where hardly any native Venetians can afford to live anymore.... but it warmed my heart to see through his eyes that old, very human Venice that I often yearned to feel. Sorry I missed him.

I am so happy to see that you are bringing the 19th-century Italians to the general public. They were dynamite and are so little known today (as was Bouguereau 30 years ago). My wife and I travelled up to Venice to see a show of Favretto's work 10 or 12 years ago-a great catalogue, with excellent reproductions-and were completely gobsmacked by the paintings. The paint quality is indescribable and, unfortunately, impossible to communicate in words to our students. The paint quality is so exquisite that one could almost eat them! You are also doubly correct in what you have said about their colour: it is spectacular!!!!

Extraordinary work - full of "Soul" of love for his subjects - Venice at its finest? Vibrant life full of character. - All with one eye, the same as Sir Alfred Munnings! Such a tragedy to see Venice virtually trashed by money - driven Councillors and Leaders, inviting too many into the city by huge sea going vessels and selling off the Soul of the true Venetians through having foreign landlords charging high rents and repayments that the locals can no ,longer afford.
