A very beautiful and sensitive concerto for cello and orchestra. Malipiero uses his usual highly personal neoclassical style, here with the lyrism required by the voice of the cello, but there is nothing mellow in this lyrism. There is rather a sort of exchange between ths soloist anf the orchestra in a classical style, without anny romantic touch.

While in theory I would agree with your comments I suggest that the lyrical aspect of the Lento is completely nostalgic, and in that case, at least to me, is wholely romantic. In the same vein as Barber and Elmer Bernstein.

@@andrewpetersen5272 I agree with you on this feeling. But nostalgia is not a Romantic prerogative. You can find it in many arias by Bach, and for instance in Berg's violin concerto.
