Listen to 13:45 to 13:52, just as an example of imperfection which takes nothing away from the excellence of the performance. One of the best performances I have ever seen happened when Arthur Rubinstein had a complete memory loss in the middle of an extremely difficult Chopin piece during a recital. He didn’t stop and apologize….he did such an amazing improvisation for some minutes, which sounded so much like Chopin in an attempt to catch the threads of the piece together in his mind, that many in the audience didn’t even realize his performance was “imperfect” in any way! The ovation he got at the end of that piece was spontaneous and LOUD, as much from the admiration people felt for the genius Rubinstein displayed to get himself out of that imperfect corner in which he found himself that it put him on a higher pinnacle than ever! In art, performers who strive for perfection-not making mistakes-are very boring to listen to, for the simple reason that they’re devoid of musicality.

Bravo Maestro ! incredible mastering of your baroque lute, such a demanding instrument. Although I'm not a great fan of the sound of long nails on double-stringed instrument, finally I notice that the pitch is clean only when only one string is stroke... endless debate 😉
@voraciousreader334115 күн бұрын
If what you’re looking for when listening to music is perfection in pitch, why on earth do you listen to medieval and Renaissance music on period instruments?? I thought all aficionados knew that *there _IS_ no ”sound of long nails on double strings” with period instruments, _because they’re all played on GUT STRINGS, not metal wrapped ones!_ And, as I’m sure you know, gut strings are perilously unreliable when it comes to pitch by their physical nature, making them extremely difficult to tune, which means that there are frequent disagreements on pitch in any but solo performances! My feeling is that it’s much better for the soul to listen for the amazing artistry virtuosi bring to their art and to try to accept the fact that these instruments are highly temperamental….after all, it’s the sound of the glorious gut strings which most modern ears find enchanting, even those who are highly sensitive to pitch as I am!
@laberintosingeniosos13 күн бұрын
Thx for your comment. I'm playing without fingernails, as I am using gut strings. Regards

@laberintosingeniosos13 күн бұрын
As for the pitch, in 1630 the writer of the book Il Corago, anonymous till today, wrote that if you need to build a theater, don't forget to build a corridor in the musicians pit, so that the lute players can step out and tune 😊. The composer J.Mattheson wrote that, if a lute player would live 80 years, 60 would be for tuning 😂 and Goethe wrote that one of the most recurrent memories of his father, is him tuning his lute endlessly 😂. Just to say that this was "a thing" then, and nowadays if you want to enjoy the quality of the historical strings, it's normal that "thing" might happen. Thx for your comment
