Summary of the 3 strategies 1) Just Show Up (more) 2) Train with intention • Work on a specific move and try to hit it daily for like week • Work on Broad Topics (eg. Guard retention, guard passing, finding the back) • 2-3 weeks • Have short and long term goals 3) STUDY • Watch footage of your own sparring sessions or yourself in competition • KZbin (choose reputable source) • Instructionals (BjjFanatics etc) •

Also, I like the new and improved thumbnail design. You’re putting in work to your channel and will be rewarded for it down the line. I think building personal audiences on social media is the ‘New Wave’ for athletes, particularly in JJ. One tip: don’t repeat yourself in title and thumbnail. Provide relevant but different information in each that complement one another and opens up a curiosity loop that your video will eventually close. Keep it up GB.

This was perfect timing. I've been trying to narrow down a strategy. I'm ranked as a brown belt. I find myself moving forward without truly understanding the depth of certain positions. I train in each technique on the day of training, but to reach an advantageous position, rarely landing submissions. Settling for body control, i.e., body lock to pass. Thank you for information this will be a very useful tool.

I was fortunate enough to attend one of your seminars last fall, it was an absolute blast. You're a very talented instructor and I'll definitely be looking forward to more uploads. This is almost exactly how I approach my training. I've always felt that training with a specific purpose was the most important factor. I even have short and long term timelines already laid out, much like you described, with my ultimate goal of becoming skilled enough to win trials, qualify for ADCC, and earn a chance to compete among the best in the world. Eventually I'll make my way out to New Wave and hopefully get the opportunity to train with you some day. Until then I'll be following and studying all of your content. Right now my primary focus is on guard passing so any videos on how to overwhelm and exhaust your opponent from top position would be greatly appreciated! I wish you the best of luck in growing your channel and on your upcoming title match with Marinho.

Excellent video 👍 A quick note to add for instructionals…I’ve found a TON of excellent older wrestling instructionals on KZbin from top tier coaches and competitors. A lot of the kids wrestling seminars are really good for us jiujitsu people since our wrestling skills are pretty rudimentary. This is also wrestling beyond the idea of takedowns such as wrestling from the bottom or from failed shots. You do have to make considerations of how it applies with submissions existing but still it’s cool to check out. Like I’ve been exploring double over hooks lately since it’s helped me combat body locks and attack in butterfly guard and now I’m exploring them from standing too. Only decent resource I’ve found for it is KZbin wrestling.

Its amazing that someone at the top level will share this iformation freely. Will definately be taking on all 3 of Giancarlo's tips so big thanks to him 🙏 I liked what he said about KZbin and being careful about what you watch, there is so much info out there. Lately i have been limiting to myself to only Danaher ( or his team, especially Gordon Ryan) , Chewjitsu, Jordan teaches Jiu-jitsu, Lachlan Giles, Marcelo Garcia and obviously pretty much anything from Bernardo. Sounds like a lot but previously i was all over the place going down rabbit holes of useless information.

Good, I show up everyday, and been working on Open guards for the past 2 months, and hoping to continue for the next 2 years. Guard retention > k-guard > DLR > RDLR > shallow K > Brimbolo > Situp guard > Repeat Do you think this is achievable? For study, I do study Submeta (from Lachlan Giles)

Hi Giancarlo, thank you for the insights. Do you suggest to choose between focusing on specific move OR broader topic, or you can do both at the same time? For example: I focus on guard retention for 3 weeks AND at the same time in week 1 I focus on triangles, week 2 armbars, week 3 RNCs. Or it's better to just focus on one and don't mix broad with specific?

These are all great points, but one thing that hobbiest should know is that when he says a week for him that's essentially a month for us. Maybe even longer depending on how much time is allocated to rolling and drilling what you want to drill rather than what ur instructor tells u to drill
