To make your giant bearing ride smoother and better, here's two tips (source, i made a few of them, and got it down to a T, pretty close to the worst metal bearing, without being one). 1. Print a 3rd piece which is a match for the two races (if it's a inner and outer race, use a segmented part with a slip piece between), you'll want to affix one of the two sides securely to a table (as flat as can be) or In Situ, then using the spacer and top part of the bearing and friction (two five liter bottles on a glass plate) you twist this fast, back and forth on a 180 rotation, twisting it 360 every few twists. -This will create a really smooth set of races, and more importantly, matched. 2. Take your balls, and measure them. After you've done so, keeping each ball to its size, you have to discard any bearing that's over the average, and replace them with bearings balls on average or smaller. -This will make sure that the race remains uniform. This gives extremely good 3D printed bearings. Smooth, and they wear out slower. You can pimp them out further with two mods. Metal filament (or wood, tho, that one's complicated) and or super glue on PLA / acetone on ABS (both before you've done no 1).
@martylawson16382 жыл бұрын
You could also make wire race ball bearings. The 3D print gets channels for the wire and 4 wires are carefully rolled to size and fit in the races. There are a few youtube videos showing how to make DIY versions, and there is a German manufacturer that makes high precision versions.

Oh Ivan. I remember the good old days where you used a screwdriver as hammers. Fond memories. Bit curious on your CAD design philosophy. How you make stuff fit together. Do you have a design idear book you follow or do you think about it on the fly. Because i keep getting facinated how you design your way out of problems. Hinges, slots, holes and even the locking mechanism for the service port of the turret. Fascinating. Maybe a tour on how you did in the past and progression untill now. Just an idea. :) Thanks for always being in good spirit!

If you want even higher speeds, torque and more repeatability, you could look into iHSV57 servo motors. I'm currently in the process of replacing the NEMA23 stepper motors that came with my milling machine with those, and holy smokes are they faster, stronger and more accurate! Also, their driver is included, so lots of saved space! They do require higher voltage, however.

If I may ask, why did you use a stepper motor for this task? you could have just used any motor with gear box and you would have decreased the cost, the driver, the programing needed and would had many more options regarding speed as it seems more important than accuracy...other than this it looks great! good job
