While exploring near the Galapagos Islands, the team of E/V Nautilus discovered a huge "black smoker" hydrothermal vent more than 10 meters tall billowing a cloud of dark superheated fluid and teeming with strange life.
E/V Nautilus is exploring the ocean studying biology, geology, archeology, and more. Watch www.nautiluslive.org for live video from the ocean floor. For live dive updates follow along on social media at / nautiluslive and / evnautilus on Twitter. For more photos from our dives, check out our Instagram @nautiluslive.

@Simon Lu. first, none of these minerals originate from anywhere near the core and poison is in the dose. there are smokers in the Sea of Cortez that bellow petroleum, the same as any oil spill.

One of the MOST fascinating things about this sort of life is that it is chemosynthetic based. This type of ecosystem is so rare and unique in that it is not directly dependent on photosynthesis, as almost all life on earth is... including whale-falls in the deeps, for example.

Humans are a blip in the natural history of the Earth and even moreso in the context of the universe/Universe, yet human culture feels all-encompassing from the inside. Whatever humans do, it only affects nature transiently, and it's not likely to affect deep-sea chemosynthetic life much at all. What I am saying is that I love a moment to see that, for better or for worse, humans don't dominate everything.

I think it's that life occurs around hydrothermal vents and this is in the deep where sunlight doesn't reach, it tells us about possible life on earth origins, which may have started near the vents (Earth's surface was hostile). It also could help us find data needed to find possible hydrothermal vents on some gas giant moons (eg possibly Europa).

what depth was this at? (does the cam footage from Nautilus include depth information? I just discovered this channel so going through a learning curve) also a followup question what would the typical (non-smoker) temperature be at the depth this footage was taken, just for contrasts sake... fascinating stuff team keep up the great work!
