Oregon Zoo

4 жыл бұрын

Visitors watched some of the world’s largest land animals demolish a couple of the area’s largest pumpkins at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, during the Oregon Zoo’s annual Squishing of the Squash.
“Our elephant family got one 800-pound pumpkin and another 600-pound one to stomp on, play with and munch on,” said Bob Lee, who oversees the zoo elephant area.
The event is a precursor to the zoo’s annual Howloween celebration, which takes place over the next two weekends is free with zoo admission. On Oct. 19-20 and Oct. 26-27, Trick-or-treaters can fill their bags with goodies and learn about wildlife. Scavenger hunts and activities are themed to teach kids about animals around the world, and their habitats and adaptations.
The giant pumpkins for this year’s Squishing of the Squash were provided by Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers Club members Larry and Christy Nelson of Albany, Ore. Enrichment items such as pumpkins help keep the zoo’s animals mentally and physically stimulated.
The Oregon Zoo is recognized worldwide for its Asian elephant program, which has spanned more than 60 years. Considered highly endangered in their range countries, Asian elephants are threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans and disease. It is estimated that just 40,000 to 50,000 elephants remain in fragmented populations from India to Borneo. The zoo supports a broad range of efforts to help wild elephants, and has established a $1 million endowment fund supporting Asian elephant conservation.
...
Committed to conservation, Oregon Zoo is currently working to save endangered California condors, Oregon silverspot and Taylor's checkerspot butterflies, western pond turtles and Oregon spotted frogs. Other projects include studies on Asian elephants, polar bears, orangutans and giant pandas. Celebrating 125 years of community support, the zoo relies in part on donations through the Oregon Zoo Foundation to undertake these and many other animal welfare, education and sustainability programs.

@Joe Schmo This is one of the best elephant enclosures in the US and it is at an AZA accredited zoo. They are not forced to smash the pumpkins. These elephants are living a good life (as proven by wildlife biologists/zoologists who I would assume know more than you) and helping educate people on their species.
@rayyanibrahim451
@rayyanibrahim451 3 жыл бұрын
@Joe Schmo LMAO Please dont tell you think wildlife biologist=zoo keeper. Wildlife biologists work mostly in the wild studying these animals. Jane Goodall for example wasn't the biggest an of primates in captivity until she actually stayed in the wild and saw the horrors they had to face and how happy chimps in good zoos were. Btw wildlife biologists dont make money off of those animals at all. They literally have no incentive except the well-being of the species. Forrest Galante another wildlife biologist was not the biggest fan of animal captivity but he does realize that it is necessary for the species' conservation and education.
@rayyanibrahim451
@rayyanibrahim451 3 жыл бұрын
@Joe Schmo Even Sir David Attenborough who makes so much more of his money from wild animals supports zoos because of the sheer importance they have in terms of conservation and education.

@Joe Schmo Ok ur trolling now stfu and go somewhere else if ur just gonna troll, but dude you actually had me thinking you were serious there for a bit. Lmao if you are serious, the world's leading breeding facilities are in zoos (and outside breeding facilities get their animals from zoos). But ofc you totally know more about animals than David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, Forrest Galante, etc. Get a wildlife biology degree and then we will see. Do some research dumbass.
@rayyanibrahim451
@rayyanibrahim451 3 жыл бұрын
@Joe Schmo Dumbass if go argue with the world's leading wildlife biologists. What even is your argument? It is proven that they are living happy lives in zoos but your calling Steve Irwin, Jane Goodall, and David Attenborough bullshit? Get a wildlife biology degree then we will talk.

idk why they did but might be bc the elephant is in a zoo. zoos are too small for elephants. they need.... like a minimum of 15 acres. this one is what like 4?
@kevingliebe5607

I agree yeah it's fun to watch. But you take a huge African animal like this, put it in a cage on a boat for two weeks so you can transport it to America and put it in a smaller area so we can bring a bunch of families with kids to cheer and make noise at them for entertainment. Elephants die way sooner in zoos than in the wild, if I was that elephant I could see tf why. Zoos aren't really about education, the people just come for entertainment. It's whatever I guess. Treating animals like shit just for us to have fun for a few hours, think what you want of it.
@jusletursoulglobaby

@xi jinping yes so 11 months ago when I wrote that comment I said a MINIMUM of 15 acres. a MINIMUM of 15 is MORE than almost 10 in case you don't know that. maybe if you're going to be that guy, pay closer attention to the detail. ZOOS ARE TOO SMALL FOR ELEPHANTS. that was the lead statement. the specifics were to EXPLAIN WHY THEY ARE TOO SMALL

For the people replying to this saying elephants don't belong in zoos....it really depends. Some zoos are rat shit at elephant care, some are great. The AZA is pretty strict on housing guidelines (for example when they dropped accreditation of Pittsburgh Zoo because the amount of human interaction was stressing the animals) and so is the EAZA but EAZA doesn't apply here because this isn't in Europe. Wildlife biologists around the globe (Researches from Smithsonian for example) agree elephants CAN be happy and live good lives in captivity. Just not every zoo does it right and the number of the ones doing it wrong outnumber those doing it right. These animals are not taken from the wild and have never been in it. Releasing them is a death sentence. They are smart but elephant traits are learned from generation to generation. The zoo matriarch knows the exhibit layout but will not know the location of water areas and feeding areas once released. Attempts to release intelligent captive wildlife into the wild have been made but they almost all ended in deaths without the constant protection and being fed/helped by rangers which is unrealistic and too expensive to do with many elephants.

@Joe Schmo thank you for the laugh dumbass. You are either trolling or an idiot. Zoos sued to be for entertainment but now accredited zoos an facilities are absolutely vital for conservation and education. Also in the words of Jane Goodall, the lead primatologist and world leader in chimpanzee studies "If it is a good zoo with a large outdoor cage, if I was a chimp I am sure I would rather be there than out in dangers of the wild". You all forget how scary the wild really is, it aint some deer frolicking in the grasslands running as far as they want doing what they please. You are forgetting that these animals get hunted by predators, have to constantly deal with parasites, run around looking for food, starvation, and constant struggle to be alive. Btw wild animals are not humans. Our brains function in a way where we have "goals" because our requirements to stay alive are now fixed and not an issue. Jason Miller from Miller's Wildlife explains the intelligence part better than I did so go watch his video. Also what is wrong with what I said? Matriarch elephants who do not know the layout of the land will die if released and it is unreasonably expensive to teach them, especially when we can use that money to protect the ones still in the wild.
