In México, the blood clams are called “patas de mula” I started eating them as a child and I never got sick. We ate them raw with salt, lemon, and hot sauce. Also, we ate them by the dozen. However, we had to make sure they were still alive and we tested them with a squirt of lemon juice which made them move.

The blood clam is very easy to open. Just put a spoon in its back where the shells meet and rotate it and voila. Or put 2 spoons then push them together. Easy. Open them before cooking so the flavor goes inside the clams.
