Hi everyone, welcome to the first Wild Report premier! This is a new feature which I have been allowed to beta test that lets all of you talk to me and with each other before and during the release of specially selected episodes. If you like this cool format, I can do more premiers in the future. Please be sure to set a reminder for the upload using the button in the lower left hand corner of the video. Also, it would be awesome if you could share this page with your friends so all of you can watch the premier and learn about spiders together. Thank you guys so much for your support. You're the best! -Ben Zino

Thank you for this video. You did a great job explaining! It saved the life of a garden spider just like this at my sisters house. She was going to kill it but I asked her to hold off until I researched it. I found your video and sent it to her and now it is their pet that lives in the corner outside their front door and the garage. They also found two little babies in the flower garden just below the large one.

Orb weavers like that generally won't bite you. First, they try to get away. If that fails, and they are not harmed, they tend to calm down fairly quickly. Honestly though, I can't really think of any spider that is actively aggressive toward humans. If anyone knows of some, please say so.

@@trevorjameson3213 Orange baboon tarantulas will bite as their first defense, unlike most spiders! It's very rare but there are a few species that are bitey. Unfortunately these also tend to be species with a painful bite, which I assume is exactly why they're keen to use it as a defense mechanism. OBTs are considered medically significant purely because their bite hurts so bad.

Oh yeah these are awesome spiders. I have several in my garden every summer and I let them do their job of protecting my garden. I don't kill the wasps either. You would be surprised how many harmful caterpillars that wasps eat. That's their favorite food so if you have wasps, you can be sure they will wipe out the caterpillars in your garden. I've seen them devour the larger ones in place, without taking them to their nest.

I have seen one of these spiders in the wild the size of a small brown bird in the body size not including the leg length with a round spiral webb at about 15 feet in diameter between some trees on an Indian reservation in Southern California. Me, my brother and some cousins were walking around and my brother walked into the webb. I stood back and we saw the giant black and yellow garden spider at the top heading back towards the trees. I catch spiders, snakes, scorpions, and other critters since I was a kid, and still do till this day. I am 59 years old going on 60. I wanted to catch this spider so bad, but was too high in the trees, plus we lost sight of it also. Never seen a garden spider of that size ever again. Will never forget and do have witnesses. Have also cought an Arizona Hairy desert scorpion in Blythe, CA. that was over 12 inches long from head to tip of tail not including the pincer arms sticking out forward. My auto mechanic teacher took it home to keep. I was the only person to pick it up. Hold the stinger and lift the body with your other hand underneath. Some people will let scorpions walk on their arms when they pick them up, but I don't, and I've never been stung. And yes there were witnesses to that also. Just wished I had videos.

The rule of thumb with most spiders is that if you don't physically harm it, or apply pressure to its body, you won't be bitten. There's some exceptions- but orb weavers aren't one of them, so if you're handling one, there's only ever a concern of being bitten if you make it a concern. :) When an orb weaver is just sitting on your hand and you're not squishing or hitting it, it's not going to bite.

The garden spiders are the only spiders that are regularly encountered which I can't make peace with. I have arachnophobia, and for some reason the garden spiders are the creepiest looking. Does anyone else feels the same? They are really large and I think the intricate colour patterns are what cause me the most unease. I just saw one in my garden and it had a really big belly compared to the one in your video. Female perhaps? It's funny how snakes don't generally scare me. Unless of course a snake was venomous. But a snake's appearance doesn't bother me. On the other hand, despite knowing that most spiders are harmless, whenever I see a spider like this, I become paralyzed and extremely uneasy/fearful.
@TheWildReportOfficial4 жыл бұрын
I also had problems with spiders for a long time, it didn't get better until I held a tarantula in Texas.
@anonymity114 жыл бұрын
@@TheWildReportOfficial What's interesting is that I did hold a spider that was large before that was furry (don't know which type) at an expo and it didn't bother me. Maybe because I was in a public place, and usually you don't feel much fear then as compared to being alone in a dark basement. Tarantulas actually don't scare me. I don't know why, but they seem cute. The spiders that have fur don't scare me that much. For some reason it's the garden spiders that bother me the most. I live in North America and have lived in Europe before, so the garden spiders were by far the largest spiders I would encounter regularly. If I lived in Australia or Africa, it might have been a different story. I think the main reason is because I grew up fearing a lot of the garden spiders. We had a lot of them in our yard and outdoor spaces when I was growing up. We also had a very large grapevine, and the garden spiders love those. It's more of a childhood trauma. What is interesting is that I used to fear the daddy long legs a lot as well. But for some reason I managed to get over them mostly. I learned that they are not really spiders. I guess the only way to get over garden spiders is to actually hold one, lol. I don't know when I'll be ready for that.
