With the mechanical filtration (Poly) being underneath the bio stones you will have to dismantle the filter to change it. It be easier to reverse the order you install everything and reverse the flow so the mech part is on top and easy to change. You wouldn't have to take the whole filter apart every time.

Nice idea! Awesome design of the vortex design with the pvc pipes… I might do that
@devinb9985
@devinb9985 6 жыл бұрын
Great filter build man, I would suggest trying to find or make some sort of large media bags for the hydrostone so you can get down to the polyfil easier when it gets gunked up with mulm. Other than that it looks like it will run great, I like the idea to use the PVC to make a vortex like that on the input tube
@devinb9985
@devinb9985 6 жыл бұрын
IFG true, I didn't even think about it making it into the discharge. I was just thinking about how much food your monsters are gonna be turning to "mulm" everyday haha
@ces69
@ces69 5 жыл бұрын
I would suggest you use a laundry basket with smaller holes, smaller than the rocks you are using and not use the poly fill which will clog up pretty quick! If you want to use the poly fill to catch the very fine debris, put a layer on the top so that you can remove it to clean or replace easily when clogged! You should also put the larger stones/hydro rocks in first and then the finer/smaller stuff. You should also put a large bulkhead fitting quite low down, as low as you can with a cap or valve so that you can clean it! Then all you would need to do is turn pump off, open to drain off and flush with a few buckets of the pond water! In the future if you needed more filtration, you could link 2 or more of these together!

Just reverse the order of the filling, stones on the bottom, and polyfil on top, easy to clean and works better.

@fishrrelaxing9361
@fishrrelaxing9361 6 жыл бұрын
Typically in pond filtering with simple setups like this you would utilize 2 cans. One for mech and one for bio. Especially since all that rock is going to compact the poly under it and drastically reduce flow and efficiency. Two smaller 20g or 30g cans would be sufficient.

nice build Eaven! my one suggestion is some filter roll to wrap around the laundry basket, because that polyfill will compress a lot when wet...that way none of the media ends up inside the basket
@truijs65
@truijs65 5 жыл бұрын
I was about to suggest something like that. You could put some light diffuser on top of that basket so the polyfill won't get compressed. If you put that media in bags you can take it out easily when you want to clean the filter and change the polyfill. Love the idea though!
@aquablaster86
@aquablaster86 5 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say, servicing that filter would be a pain! That polyfill will clog fast and then you'd have to take out all the media to change it. Great video tho thanks for sharing! A few modifications and this would be a sweet, cheap set-up.

As long as you're actually happy with the performance and maintenance of a "filter" like that, I guess that's all that matters at the end of the day.... Been there, done that and I see a rebuild in your future. Get a food grade 55g barrel- usually about $10 off craigslist, never waste money on flex hose, bag your media and fiber mats are rinseable, (in old water, never fresh tap) reusable and won't clog or be a nasty mess when it comes to change it out. I wish you luck.

I've had a very similar idea for a pond filter.. get a wheelie bin and put a large traffic cone in it upside down with a gap at the bottom for large particles with a tap to empty.. then fill up with sponge or floss and media at top with a spout.. in take pours straight down the cone.. the cone creates a vortex

FINALLY!...Somebody on youtube using good old filter floss!...not that sheet poly or those other course grades. After awhile,the filter floss acts as a bio filter and its already the best mechanical filter material. When it wears and gets course? Just add more!..what I do. Never causes a drop in water quality.

great build but wrong concept you need small grid inner basket to catch the large debree, than a course media. than medium ,than fiber which will make it easier to clean the fiber. The concept is to go from course to fine .also add a water back wash to clean the rock with a drain hole to drain the debree from the rocks. I have this build on my turtle pond.. Home depot sells a metal basket with real small holes.

Great info on how to build a massive filter. Doesn't this make you have to break it down completely to change the floss out or do you ever need to? What if you added another mesh layer, a created pan, with some of that fiberglass ground covering in it between the floss and media layer. The ground covering would save the media from clogging and the mesh pan could have some nylon rope on each side so you could lift the entire media bed out. But, this is just me thinking and I might be wrong.

If you could figure a way to put like a sheet or a screen between the course rocks and poly it would make cleaning it easier. I would probably glue in a ring just above the poly line then make a basket or a mesh to set on top of it.

Are the grow stones inert? As I know pumice raises yr ph to 8.0-85, but I guess you know that as it's ideal for African cichlids. I really hope it is inert as I like pumice as a media but it makes all my fish start flashing (centrals) but that looks just like pumice. I do like that filter though, is it way too loud for a living room?
