We visit the colourful Giant Kite Festival in Guatemala close to Antigua Guatemala. It is called El Festival de Barriletes Gigantes de Sumpango Sacatepequez Guatemala. It is celebrated on El Día de Los Muertos en Guatemala, also called Day of the Dead or All Saints day.
To get to the kite festival we are walking through the town of Sumpango. Here you find many food stalls serving delicious food. Except food you can buy for example traditional clothes and barriletes de Guatemala. We really enjoy our walk where we have the chance to see the local street life.
El festival de barriletes gigantes, is an event that has been on our bucket list for many years, and it is even more amazing and colourful than we imagined. Have you ever been to a #kitefestival anywhere in the world?
The Giant Kite Festivals on the day of the dead in Guatemala are held simultaneously in Santiago Sacatepequez and Sumpango Sacatepequez.
We choose to attend the kite festival in Sumpango Guatemala which is bigger and also closer to Antigua Guatemala. This kite festival Guatemala is arranging is so colourful and unique. If you want travel Guatemala 2020 or another year we highly recommend you to make a day trip from La Antigua Guatemala to Sumpango or see Barriletes Gigantes de Santiago Sacatepequez. Watch our other La Antigua Guatemala 2020 videos for more inspiration!
We recommend you to visit Guatemala Day of the Dead celebration, El Dia de Los Muertos Guatemala and take part in El Festival de Barriletes Gigantes de Guatemala. For us the Guatemala Giant Kite Festival was a highlight when we were traveling Guatemala. If you are travelling in Central America be sure to visit Guatemala on this day!

How precious a time you must have had here during this celebration of life and honouring those who have died. I am familiar with the feast days on the 1st and 2nd of November but have never experienced them celebrated so beautifully. I can only imagine how treasured these memories are for you. Stunning display and great video recording. Loved it a lot. Your heritage is definitely a living part of you Giorgio. 🥰👍🎥🥳❤️🙋‍♀️

All that street food looks amazing! The cemetery does look beautiful. I love all the colours. I love the idea behind the kite festival and I love how much detail has gone into every individual kite. They're so beautiful! Tacos are always a good idea, hehe. I love the huge owl kite. Wow, 90,000 people! What a turn out.

I am also Guatemalan and was lucky to attend the festival in 2019. Watching this beautifully made video of the festival brought back so many memories. Today, I am sharing it with my Spanish class in Australia. Well done for portraying the festival and Guatemalan culture in a genuinely positive light.

@@DreamyTravelStory Those weird figures on those kites are really fascinating, that giant cat kite, those human and animal faces and sometime its human faces in animal figures. Really I loved it. But will these giant kites really fly high up, as I am seeing only small kites flying high.
@DreamyTravelStory
@DreamyTravelStory 3 жыл бұрын
@@tracingmyfootsteps Apparently some of the big kites are just there for display, but some of the big ones should be able to fly. The problem was that it was not very windy that day and it started to rain in the late afternoon so they had to protect them from the rain.

That is absolutely beautiful! I'd never even heard of a kite festival before but after googling, this one comes up as one of the top 5 in the world! Was this filmed recently? That's a lot of people, just wondering if health was a concern or are things pretty steady in Guatemala regarding the pandemic?
@DreamyTravelStory

This is filmed last year. We spent 8 months in Guatemala so we are releasing many videos from our travel there. Guatemala has been more or less in lockdown since mid March so probably this festival won't happen this year because of the pandemic 😢

@DreamyTravelStory

Maybe you could enjoy it from the restaurant if you don't want to be in the crowd 😊 It started to rain so everybody left the festival area, but we also heard that some kites are just there for display and are not possible to fly. We plan to visit the festival again in the future so then we hopefully can see some of the bigger kites fly 😊

Very cool that you were in Guatemala for their Dia de los Muertos like we were in Mexico for theirs! Bet that corn tastes better than the corn I smoked on the grill the other night, lol. Those tacos look so tasty! April loves owls, so that part is especially cool. And the colors--they are incredible! Are you two wearing matching shirts?? ;-) We hope to attend this someday; it seems pretty magical! It was not too hot then?

We love your video from Dia de los Muertos in Mexico! It is on our bucket list! We agree, the owl is amazing but our favourite is the big "doll" 😊 It was very hot but luckily we could sit in the restaurant terrace that had a roof that protected us from the sun. It would have been tough spending all day in direct sunlight 🌞 Haha, yes sometimes we like to dress similar. Instead of matching camping track suits we are wearing red vintage shirts 😂
