This project is awesome, and I can't wait to see mech racing become a real thing. Will the mech be partially covered in plates at some point, or is always gonna have that skeletal frame exposed? Obviously not where it obscures pilot visibility, but it definitely looks like some areas on the mech could be covered with some kind of surface to make it look more "complete". Or is there a good reason for it to be skeletal like that?

Thanks man! Yes, for sure. We kept Prosthesis pretty open because it's a prototype and we're constantly wrenching on it, but we'll be putting a full body kit on it as time goes by. Race teams will have signature body styles and graphics when they compete and future mechs could possibly even have fully enclosed, climate controlled cockpits.

This design has more potential to be useful (and fun!) than any other solution I have seen to date. The control/pilot's pod is the real key. A more biomemetic design may enable a smoother gait. I guess i want to see a kind of headless dog shaped mech with the pilot/control pod where the rib cage would be.

Not quite "racing", but I love seeing more video of this! I can't help but picture a cockpit that's independent of (and stabilized from) the jerky and tiring movements of the chassis -- I would expect that more fluid movements are a goal because operator fatigue can't be such an omnipresent complication... Obviously that'd be a lot more work, but it seems like a practical necessity. Then again, if it's just short spans of locomotion that allow for easier use of a jackhammer then maybe it's less of an issue. Have you attempted to add any extensions other than the front/back stabilizer prongs? Would the additional weight of a heavy tool make the platform unstable? I'd also be curious to see one of these dressed up a bit with thoughtfully-placed lightweight panels (plastic or stretched nylon fabric?) so that it doesn't look like such an unfinished thing; Right now it has the appearance of scaffolding, when it could look more like mechanical origami. Just thoughts. Your contraption already provides an awesome jumping-off point for the imagination! :D

You're bang on Genetic Blasphemy. The pilot is suspended in all 3 directions already but this last winter we substantially upgraded the pilot suspension system - it's gloriously floaty! (if you make it toooo floaty, you can't balance though. There's as sweet spot). We also have body panels in the works. See my response to @Magnus above.

This is the single coolest thing I’ve ever seen my god guys y’all are legends. A question: why not have the legs more in the back and front instead of on the sides? It seems more stable and stuff but guessing it had something to do with how humans function. Anyways can’t wait to see flying jumping mech bots going through giant sized parkour with unique designs in the future by god am I impressed and exited. This is just like titanfall but in real life. Thanks man. Jon will say having all the legs in a row was just too simplify things for this first prototype. Lessens the loads when shifting the weight around. Another benifit is that it can turn in the spot, essentially a 0 "wheelbase". Future mechs we'll experiment with other leg layouts though for sure.

It could do it quite a bit faster today. That was 2 years ago. We've done many improvements in the time since then. We're raising money to build the next generation mech(s). For Gen 2 we're targeting half the way and twice the power so it'd going to move. Prosthesis is after all our only our first proof of concept prototype. We know so many different ways to make it better in almost every aspect.

Interesting question. There won't be a theme per se. People regularyl draw associations between the mechs and familiar creatures, but it's all in the eye of the beholder. Engineering drives all the design in pursuit of performance. There will be different classes based on weight, size and degrees of freedom (DOF).The architecture, and thus appearance, of the mechs will evolve to optimize within the constraints of the racing classes. Prosthesis, for example, is 4000kg, 4m x 5.5m w 5m and has 8-DOF. The next class will have 12-DOF, which means the hips on the mech's legs will be able to pivot in and out, as well as swing back and forth. This will create a totally different type of mech.

Two questions. How Heavy is the mech, and what kind of batteries does it use?

Last time we checked it was about 3700kg in 2017. We've added a few parts since then. We built the battery in house, 100v pack with 300kg of Lifepo4 cells. Puts out 800+ amps continuous on a regular basis.

@@lordfrostdraken there are 2 hydraulic pumps, each with their own electric motor. For training exercises, and walking around you only need 1 pump and that can last around an hour. Going full tilt with 2 pumps, it'll go for about 20 minutes. With our current charger setup it takes 5 hours for a full charge but we could shorten that to 1 if we had the infrastructure. Most of our field testing relies on a generator for power at this point, so we're limited by how many watts it can push out. There's better ways to do it if you have the money.

@@lordfrostdraken , the batteries aren't in any danger of being pushed too hard. The C rating of battery is a measure of how many Amps the battery can safely discharge and charge at. At full tilt we're at less than half the max C rating for these cells. That being said, the pack is now using cells that are 6 years old, we could definitely build a a pack with more capacity in the same volume using more modern cells. Other limitations to run time are motor and hydraulic oil temperatures, both of which can be addressed with more engineering and time. And finally, pilot fatigue is another limiting factor that we deal with daily. Depending on what you're doing in the mech, trying to push past 20 minutes of run time can be physically exhausting if you're really pushing hard.

Bipedal will actually be more complicated because each leg requires more degrees of freedom. Right now we only have two (knee rotation & hip rotation) no sideways motion or actively controlled ankles. We'll get there though. The way forward is clear!

You would imput the command to move the leg, but that signal would be sent to the computer and it would calculate all the fine details to do it as precise as possible....
