Are you planning on doing a video on the entirety of your collection? I remember seeing you tour your collection when I was younger, and I've only recently rediscovered your youtube channel. What you do here is incredibly fascinating, thanks for the cool content. Definitely subscribing

I've been planning to show the collection in segments for each order. I have about a hundred drawers so there is a lot of material to cover. I've been distracted for a while but I'm nearly ready to get started on it.

I’m so happy to see you post again, watching your videos helped me pin my first couple of butterflies and now I have a collection I’m very proud of. Thank you! ❤️

I'm glad you enjoyed them. It's been so crazy busy for the past couple of years that I haven't had the time to post more videos. I will have more time over the summer to get back to it so I hope to be posting more.

I'm so excited to see that you've posted another video! This is such a clever way to go about solving the leg problem. I'm definitely doing this in the future! Also, what kind of glue is the blue one? I've been using a clear drying kind on my specimens but it dries a little shiny so I'm looking for something else that's more matte.
@insectsafari
@insectsafari 3 жыл бұрын
The blue glue is a water based school glue. I've seen different brands but it all seems to work the same. Sometimes it's clear. I like that you can see through it to the parts you're trying to reconnect like a leg or antenna. Also, if you make a mistake it's easy to remove with water to try again.

hello, are you going to post the part 3 of the alascan king crab specimen video?
@insectsafari
@insectsafari 2 жыл бұрын
I have to shoot it first. I will be starting on it in January. I've been distracted by a move and a pandemic but that project is now back at the top. I need to build some antennas for it and paint it. I already have someone who wants to buy it.

Hello! I'm wondering if there is a way I can get in touch with you to ask a few questions. I'm in the process of buying a huge collection of immaculately preserved insects from Peru. Lots of little things I'm running into in terms of cleaning/restoration. Your channel has been an invaluable resource but a chance to pick your brain on specific points would be massively appreciated!

Can I ask a few questions about your board? Where did you get it? And what brand and wood would you recommend? Does size matter? Would you recommend a Balsa wood board or would regular styrofoam be good for a beginner that wants to get into this hobby? I wanna use it for butterflies and beetles but cautious since I don’t know much about entomology. Thank you and keep up your content!
@insectsafari
@insectsafari 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris, I get all my supplies from BoQuip in California. I like the adjustable balsa spreading boards. They are more useful for different size specimens and last a long time. You can also get pins, glassine and tweezers (curved fine is best) from BioQip. Don't be discouraged if your first attempts don't turn out well. It takes practice.

This is such a cool idea! Thank you for the presentation of it :D There's so few resourced in pinning millipedees, ive been searching for 2 days after my one died. I tried to pin it and let it dry out in the open but it begin to leak with a foul smell, so Im not sure if I should give up on it or let it be? Maybe put it into alcohol? Would you have any advice?
@insectsafari
@insectsafari 2 жыл бұрын
Put it in alcohol now. I would use denatured alcohol and not isopropyl which has some water mixed in. Change the alcohol as it becomes discolored. I'd keep it soaking for at least several weeks.

@@insectsafari That's super helpful thank you! I need to buy the alcohol somewhere then, would it be a good idea to put the millipede in thee freezer until i can get my hands on something?

@@Erujayy Yes, good idea. You want it to decay as little as possible inside.

Just as a suggestion... Why not use a piece of glass cut to size? And glue the specimen directly to the glass, its stronger, its seamless and gives you the opportunity to see the underside... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good suggestion but it will be pinned into a museum drawer in a teaching collection.

Or possibly a strip of plexi glass? That would allow for small holes for the pins. I'd heat a pin with a small torch and melt the holes as drilling plexi usually leads to chipping if not shattering the piece. I used a similar method on a couple of tarantulas I mounted to give the bodies some "lift".
