Can I ask where you buy your specimens from?
@insectsafari14 күн бұрын
There are many dealers who sell these captive-raised moths. It's best to buy from dealers that are already in the country where you live to avoid having to deal with permitting and customs. If I knew where you lived I could give you suggestions.

The modified appendages logically serve to monitor water velocity and trigger grip to their substrate. Possibly also to sense others nearby as they seem to form colonies.
@insectsafari3 ай бұрын
That's a logical suggestion, someone made a similar comment a year ago. I also have a species that lives on gray whales and these lack the appendages. I'm sure that an expert in the subject could answer this question for us. I'll see if I can find one.

What about a sunken in body on a Luna moths specimen, what can I use to reshape it
@insectsafari3 ай бұрын
I have a video that shows how I reshape abdomens on larger moths but it would be difficult to do this with smaller specimens, but not impossible. I have replaced deformed abdomens with better examples on smaller moths, if you had replacements available. Hydrating the abdomen and reshaping it with your fingers might work. Actias luna specimens are a bit more fragile and the abdomen hairs can come off more easily. Also the white color is easily stained by messing with them. Trying to do these things is how one gains skills so I do recommend attempting it if the specimen is not too valuable. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y363gp-VaJyketk

Hello to you sir . I`ve been watching your channel since discovering it last month and it`s one of the most useful and interesting entomology channels out there ,just absolutely the absorbing. I`m a collector of lepidoptera for aver 25 years and have amassed a good number of specimens. I just got back to my collection as I was on hiatus for several years, but am back at it in full gear . I have several hundred papered specimens that need to be pinned, so I made all new spreading boards and relaxing chambers. I have your channel playing all the time whilst I work on my bugs ,it`s so relaxing so very ASMR lol! I also watch and listed while reading books in bed ,it`s awesome ! You seem so relaxed and have the perfect demeanor for this type of work and KZbin. I do need to work on collecting more moth specimens after watching you and also beetles of all types. I should have went to university for entomology instead of a BA in fine arts (that was a wastes of time ) as I have always been fascinated and captivated by the insect world and pretty much the natural world (thought about being an Ornithologist when I was young) . like they say ,always follow your dreams ,oh well. I hope you plan on making more bug videos in the near future ,it`s important. Stay well and keep teaching the world about our insect friends ,it`s most valuable to all. Yours sincerely Paul T in CANADA (subscribed of course !!)

Found a nearly intact male red-spotted purple on my porch (missing antennae and one little wing tip), never pinned anything before but figured a whole dead butterfly essentially handed to me was too good to pass up trying. Great video to follow along to, I was able to get it flat eventually (I don't have any syringes so I had to skip that part and hope it worked, it was quite dry so ~48hrs in the chamber), the scales didn't come off as easily as I feared. Literally just finished and I can't wait for it to dry, your insect videos are very well made and informative!

@@Beanz305 I remember finding a dealer in Australia years ago but I never ordered anything from them. I suspect that they're still around. Some dealers don't sell Ornithoptera because of the permitting hassles and some won't ship outside their own country. I have seen farming operations in NG selling directly to collectors but then you have to deal with importing issues. While restrictions are a hassle, I appreciate the efforts to protect species.

@insectsafari10 ай бұрын
I'm happy that you enjoyed it. In the US the most commonly available brand of water-based glue is Elmers but there are other, equally good brands. They make a white glue, used most often in schools for art projects, a wood glue and a clear (or pale blue) glue that also has a gel formula. I prefer the gel, it's a little more viscous. The clear glue allows you to more easily see the ends of the parts you are attaching and is not visible when dry. I like water based glues because if you make a mistake, it's easy to remove with water for another try. Cyanoacrylate glues can't be easily removed. I do sometimes use them for certain wing repairs like attaching broken luna moth tails with carbon fiber splints ( I have a video).

@insectsafari Жыл бұрын
Yes, dip them in acetone and wipe with a stiff paintbrush or cotton swab. If soaked in acetone for more than a few min. the legs can become a little stiff. The dragonflies are somewhat fragile so be gentle with them. Acetone can also help preserve some of the color in the bodies of dragonflies.
