I think both parties act can be justifiable, when you see a giant monster, our first reactions would be fear and for protection. And it would be easy to also dismiss the child words as delusional and adding to the fact that you think he killed your friends. Imagine living peacefully and suddenly someone invade your nest and take away your child. And he never even actually killed them and even somehow protect them. What would be really interesting is that, instead of a "happy ending", they show the town later overrun by giant spiders. Because the monster they slayed has been killing the spiders for them, but they repaid it by wiping it almost extinct. And the movie ends with a little glimmer of hope when they discover one of the monster's eggs, and the boy and his father (along with some other townsfolk) try to protect it until it hatches to try to restore the ecosystem.
